Pre Targeting Science Work-Textbook Primary 1 is written based on the B.E. 2560 (A.D. 2017) revised version of Thailand’s Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 (A.D. 2008) for the purpose of facilitating the learning of students in the Science subject. With the scientific process and 21st century skill enhancing activities, students will discover the world of Science and learn to solve various problems in effective ways. In addition, they will have opportunities to learn and engage with every step of scientific experiments and activities so that they can apply the knowledge and skills to solve problems in real world context and create innovative ideas and work. Vocabulary Read and Think Along inquiry observing classifying Thiiss bmluaer.ble ginretToehnis.grImeewanirllbgslerooriustpi.t mWaerbwclielolslosborysr.t ththeeir KYE Do you know how science is related to our lives? 3Learning Science

1 The Scientific Method Science is related to our everyday lives. To study science and find out answers, we can follow the scientific method. Here are the 5 steps of the method. The Scientific Method 1. Asking questions KYE 2. Predicting the answers 3. Gathering information 4. Studying the information 5. Drawing conclusions Did you use the scientific method in your daily life? How? 4

Let’s Try This! Tick (✓) the following that are part of the scientific method. 1 What is in the gift box? 2 ✓ 3 Tahree fuinssedanfodr tsawilsimomfinfigs.h 4 The ladybug’s wings are black and red. KYE ✓ ✓ 5 This is how my 6 group sort animals. This is fun. Animal group ✓ 5Learning Science

The scientific method is the steps to find out answers or discover in a scientific way. Here are the 5 steps of the scientific method. 1. Asking questions ? The scientific method starts when we observe things around us and ask questions about them. KYE 2. Predicting the answers We try to guess the possible answer first by using the information we have. Then, we find out the correct answer. 6

3. Gathering information To find the correct answer, we need to gather information by observing, discovering, investigating, and other ways and record our findings. 4. Studying the information We study the information we recorded to understand what happened. KYE 5. Drawing conclusions We check to see if the answer we guessed and the result we got are the same. Then, we draw a conclusion. 7Learning Science

µExÑÇaÍmÂèÒp§le Studying red ants with the scientific method Step 1 Asking a question ? What does a red ant look like? Step 2 Predicting the answer A red ant has a red body with feelers, wings, and 4 KYE legs. Step 3 Gathering information We observe the red ants on the mango tree. We use a magnifying glass to see their bodies up close. We record what we find and search for more information from other sources. 8

Step 4 Studying the information We study the information and find that red ants live on trees. They have a red body with mandibles, feelers, and 6 legs. They do not have wings. Step 5 Drawing a conclusion Parts of an red ant From the study, the red KYE ants have a red body with mandibles, feelers, and 6 legs. They do not have wings. 9Learning Science

2 The Science Process Skills The science process skills are tools that scientists use to find out how to study, answer questions, and solve problems. Example We need to learn and practice some important science process skills so that we know how to use them. Here are 4 science process skills that we will learn in this level. 1 Observing Observing is using the five senses that are sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch to learn about objects or events. Sight Hearing Smell Taste Touch KYE Example What is orange Hmm, how can We can touch the The orange peel peel like? we know that? orange peel. feels rough. Observe the orange peel first. 3 The Scientific Mind A scientific mind is characteristic of a person who uses the scientific process to study or solve problems. The person with a scientific mind can be reasonable, responsible, curious, honest, careful, and open-minded. What are the characteristics of a person with a scientific KYE mind? Let’s Try This!
