Champaign Country Club July 2017 Newsletter

A Letter From Our President 2017 Board of DirectorsMr. Rick Wilberg Rick Wilberg I hope everyone will enjoy a fabulous Independence Day Celebration on July President 3rd! Please assist the Club in ensuring a fun and safe event by carpooling or [email protected] walking to the Club for the celebration. There will be valet parking available. We would like to reserve the majority of our main parking lot for our older Greg Cozad members and those with mobility challenges. Also, please encourage all attendees to adhere to the wristband policy and enjoy a responsible evening President Elect of social camaraderie and fun. We will have three security check-in tents [email protected] along Armory Avenue for your convenience. On July 28, 29, and 30, we are proud to host the CICCA Swim & Dive Jen Parastaran Conference Championships. This is an event that we get to host once every six years. I want to thank all those members that have been organizing and Secretary planning this event for the last year. We believe that our facilities are an [email protected] outstanding venue for such an event, and no one does Conference like the CCC does Conference. There will be many opportunities to volunteer and Brian Neiswender serve. You will see a few sign-up programs on our Facebook page in July. You do not have to be a swim or dive parent to sign up. We will welcome Past President “alums” or past participants to help throughout the weekend. We anticipate [email protected] that there will be over 600 people in attendance on Saturday evening for the party, and over 800 people here for the swim portion of the event on Dan Holder Sunday. One of our challenges to host such an event is parking. We are no longer Treasurer (ex officio) able to use the golf practice facility for parking. Therefore, we are going to [email protected] ask that all CCC members park offsite on Sunday, July 30th and reserve the parking lot for the visiting clubs. We will encourage our members to park David Bernthal at home, at a nearby friend’s house, or along the city streets close to CCC. June was host to several golf tournaments at the CCC. I would like to Director congratulate Jim & Dick Green for winning the 2017 Men’s Member Guest; [email protected] Liz McDonald, Joy Bilger, and their team for winning the 18 Hole Ladies Pars for Pink Scramble; and Peter Black as this year’s Men’s Club Champion! Kenny Bilger Our youth programs are more dynamic and fun than ever! Our Junior Golf program has continued to grow, and it is exciting to see our children learn Director the game. Congratulations to our Swim & Dive teams as they continue their [email protected] successful season. The Tennis program is also very successful as we prepare for the CICCA Conference Championships in Bloomington on July 8. Scott Grumish Lastly, we anticipate our new website and app to be up and running in the next couple of weeks. We will send out links and information as it becomes Director available. We look forward to hosting a very dynamic site to be used to [email protected] assist in our member communication and enjoyment of the Club. Enjoy the summer, and see you at the Club! Ken Hendren Rick Wilberg President Director [email protected] Dennis Hesch Director [email protected]

August in June? For those of you who have been on the couse this month, you will most likely have noticed two things...it isplaying well, and it looks like August! Actually we are quite dry even for August! This month (as of June 28th),we have received 1.10 inches of rain. Our June average is 4.17 inches. If it were August, our monthly averagewould be 3.61 inches. Additionally, we have broken the 90 degree mark eight times this month, and theforecast calls for two more days of 90 to finish out the month. Luckily we have been rather cool for severaldays between heat waves! To get technical for a bit, we superintendents do not grow grass. We HELP grass grow. We spend the springand fall preparing our turf for the inevitable and dreaded “summer decline” that happens nearly everyyear. As many of you know, grass (and all plants) produce energy through a process called photosynthesis. They also use energy to grow and repair themselves from injury (mostly mowing) through a process calledrespiration. When the turf plant is producing more food than needed to recover from stresses, it stores theenergy. This is typically the scenario in the spring and fall. Once the turf plant starts using more energy than itis producing, the clock starts ticking. This “more going out than coming in” scenario is typically happening inJuly and August. Over time, the stored energy is depleted and the plant begins to shut down. This is what wecall “summer decline,” and once it starts, the race is on. During summer decline, processes in the plant start tolose efficiency and ultimately will shut down if not helped along. We have recently been adding cytokinens(extracted from seaweed and certain kelp plants) to our spray program to help bolster our turf’s abillity to lastthrough the decline. Other nutrients and amino acids are added depending on the health of the turf. Timelywatering, managing cart traffic, and creative fertilizing will give the turf enough relief to make it through thedecline until environmental conditions that favor efficient photosynthesis return. We superintendents like tocall this period of turf recovery “football season,” and it is why most superintendents can’t wait for the NFL tostart up each year! Around Labor Day, temperatures begin to cool, timely rain becomes more likely, and theturf plant begins to recover and repair again. This June, we have seen stretches of “summer decline” start early. Fortunately, they have been broken up bystretches of cooler (but dry) weather that has given our turfgrass some time to recover. We will, however, bevery vigilant and will keep a close eye on our turf health. With a couple well timed breaks in the weather andwith a well trained staff, we hope to enjoy a successful season at the Club!As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you have about the golf course orgrounds. I can be reached via email at [email protected], or by phone through the ClubOffice at 217-356-1391.See you on the course!Ben RinkGolf Course Superintendent
