April 2021 SRI AUROBINDO SOCIETY VOL 35.04 Singapore NEWSLETTER Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda, Bliss) Joy of Spirituality The reward of sincere efforts. Sansevieria Bowstring hemp, Snake plant, Mother-in-law's tongue White to dusty white scented tubular flowers with a narrow corolla tube, six narrow recurved lobes and six erect exserted stamens; borne in small clusters sparsely arranged along the erect stalks. A perennial herb with flat swordlike leaves strikingly mottled with contrasting shades of green. The yoga we practice is not for ourselves alone, but for the Divine; its aim is to work out the will of the Divine in the world, to effect a spiritual transformation and to bring down a divine nature and a divine life into the mental, vital and physical nature and life of humanity. Its object is not personal Mukti, although Mukti is a necessary condition of the yoga, but the liberation and transformation of the human being. It is not personal Ananda, but the bringing down of the divine Ananda - Christ's kingdom of heaven, our Satyayuga - upon the earth. (Sri Aurobindo)

Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss) Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. April 2021. Guiding Light of the Month Yet it is in the deep silence of my mute and total adoration that I best understand Thee. For then who can say what loves, what is loved, and what is the power of loving in itself? All three are but one in an infinite bliss. O give to everyone, Lord, the boon of that incomparable bliss. May 27, 1914 Prayers and Meditations, The Mother From the Editor’s Desk something which is deep and essential? Possibly by digging deep within to the very fount? We shall have to see for ourselves. Here is a sweet description of Bliss by Sri Aurobindo: As the year 2021, the year of Sri Aurobindo’s 150th birth anniversary dawned, we took on the main theme of Sri Bliss contains coolness and warmth, passivity and Aurobindo’s symbol. We had a glimpse of the symbol activity, repose and action, sweetness and tenderness, all at the same time. Divine tenderness as being made of two triangles, one descending and one … is something very different from sweetness—it is ascending, transposed one upon the other to form a star, like the Star of David. There is a square that forms in the a paroxysm of joy, a vibration so strong that the middle as the lines of the triangles intersect. Within this body feels it will burst, so it is forced to widen. square is water with a lotus floating on the water. We are into the month of April now and are still keeping If we settle gently on these words, and let them sink with the descending part of the triangle, which is in, perhaps some idea of bliss we may get. Or rather, Satchidananda or Sat-Chid-Ananda. We examined Sat have a growing sense that in our day to day existence, and Chid separately in the last two months. In this issue in all our uplifting sensations, we may not be anywhere close to bliss! The disparity is explained thus by M.P. of our newsletter, we examine the last of the three, Pandit: “Ananda, when it manifests in the world Ananda or Bliss. through mind-life-body, takes on the forms we In trying to conceptualise Bliss along the corridors of designate as Love, Joy, Pleasure. These are, naturally, our mind, we sweep past this concept-door of pleasure, limited terms in the limited creation, reflecting happiness and then joy. Pleasure and happiness are imperfectly the absolute Bliss of the Divine. They are forms of sensation that comes out of the satisfaction of limited because they are conditioned by the limitations some self-need, of desire or want. Joy may or may not of the Self of Matter, the Self of Life-Force and the be a selfish motivation. It is a sensation within Self of Mind, and thus, we tend to experience the absence or weakness of these forces in our human accompanied by a sense of fulfilment with an outflow lives.” Next Sri Aurobindo writes about what this bliss of happiness more or less temporary, since time and space dependant. These hese are forms of good feelings can do: we feel when our surface wants and desires are satisfied, born out of a general condition of well-being, and The diamond light of Bliss has the power to melt all contentment no matter how long or short the duration. hostile forces. Nothing can resist it. No consciousness, no being, no hostile will can draw Bliss. Reading its description evokes feelings of near it without immediately being dissolved, for it is another kind. It is not that joy or happiness born out of the Divine light in its pure creative power. satisfaction of our human needs. It is said to be “a thing to be felt ... not mere joy, but something much more And this is Ananda, yet again something that awaits us on this spiritual journey, not an end in itself but a deep and essential.” How does one understand this consequence of our identification with the All-blissful Brahman. www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 2 Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss)

If this withdrew, the world would sink in the Void; If this were not, nothing could move or live. A hidden Bliss is at the root of things. A mute Delight regards Time’s countless works: To house God’s joy in things Space gave wide room, To house God’s joy in self our souls were born. This universe an old enchantment guards; Its objects are carved cups of World-Delight Whose charmed wine is some deep soul’s rapture-drink: The All-Wonderful has packed heaven with his dreams, He has made blank ancient Space his marvel-house; He spilled his spirit into Matter’s signs: His fires of grandeur burn in the great sun, He glides through heaven shimmering in the moon; He is beauty carolling in the fields of sound; He chants the stanzas of the odes of Wind; He is silence watching in the stars at night; He wakes at dawn and calls from every bough, Lies stunned in the stone and dreams in flower and tree. Even in this labour and dolour of Ignorance, On the hard perilous ground of difficult earth, In spite of death and evil circumstance A will to live persists, a joy to be. There is a joy in all that meets the sense, A joy in all experience of the soul, A joy in evil and a joy in good, A joy in virtue and a joy in sin: Indifferent to the threat of Karmic law, Joy dares to grow upon forbidden soil, Its sap runs through the plant and flowers of Pain: It thrills with the drama of fate and tragic doom, 3 Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss)

On earth it lingers drinking its deep fill, Through the symbol of her pleasure and her pain, Of the grapes of Heaven and the flowers of the Abyss, Of the flame-stabs and the torment-craft of Hell And dim fragments of the glory of Paradise. Sri Aurobindo Bliss Bliss contains coolness and warmth, passivity and activity, repose and action, sweetness and tenderness, all at the same time. Divine tenderness … is something very different from sweetness—it is a paroxysm of joy, a vibration so strong that the body feels it will burst, so it is forced to widen. No consciousness, no being, no hostile will can draw near it without immediately being dissolved, for it is the Divine light in its pure creative power. Ananda Ananda is a thing to be felt—it cannot be defined except negatively that it is not mere joy, but something much more deep and essential. * It is the statement of the Upanishad that there is an ether of Ananda in which all breathe and live; if it were not there, none could breathe or live. * It is fundamentally true for most people that the pleasure of life, of existence in itself, predominates over the troubles of life; otherwise most people would want to die whereas the fact is that everybody wants to live—and if you proposed to them an easy means of eternal extinction they would decline without thanks. That is what X is saying and it is undeniable. It is also true that this comes from the Ananda of www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 4 Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss)

Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss) Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. April 2021. existence which is behind everything and is reflected in the instinctive pleasure of existence. Naturally, this instinctive essential pleasure is not the Ananda,—it is only a pale and dim reflection of it in an inferior life-consciousness—but it is enough for its purpose. I have said that myself somewhere and I do not see anything absurd or excessive in the statement. * Why should the joy of creation be unyogic? Every creator feels the joy of creation—including the Divine Creator. (Sri Aurobindo, Letters on Yoga) The Self of Bliss Sri Aurobindo translates Taittiriya Upanishad, Brahmanandavalli, Chapter 5 (part 2): “Now there is yet a second and inner self which is other than this which is of Knowledge and it is fashioned out of Bliss. And the Self of Bliss filleth the Self of Knowledge. Now the Bliss-Self is made in the image of a man; according as is the human image of the other, so is it made in the image of the man. Love is the head of Him, Joy is His right side, pleasure is His left side; Bliss is His spirit which is the self of Him; the Eternal is His lower member wherein He resteth abidingly. Whereof this is the Scripture.” In order to appreciate the sense of this chapter, it may be useful to reframe the paradigm slightly. Body, Life and Mind are the primary constituents of what we know of as the human being and his life in the world. The Knowledge-Self, Vijnanamaya Purusha, is the immediate cause at a more subtle and powerful level, of this mind-life-body manifestation. This Self retains the consciousness of Oneness that is the characteristic of the Brahman, while creating all the myriad forms and interactions that occur with the creation of the mental, vital and physical worlds and the interactions that occur at that level. This Knowledge-Self therefore is in direct relation with the consciousness of the Brahman, which consists of Existence-Consciousness-Bliss, united and unblemished, called also Sat-Chit-Ananda. Thus, when the Upanishad refers to the Being consisting of Bliss, it is directly referencing Sat-Chit-Ananda as the ultimate causal factor and the subtlest and most powerful level of existence. Sri M. P. Pandit observes: “It is this Bliss or Anandamaya Purusha who makes possible the existence of all the other Purushas. Ananda, bliss, is the very nature of Brahman from whom all is derived; and it is from the fountain-spring of Ananda in its supreme ebullience that all creation issues forth, is motivated and maintained. The Self of Ananda is not supported by any other Self like the previous selves, but it is based, indeed arises directly out of Brahman of which it is the very nature.” Sri Aurobindo, in On Yoga, as cited by Sri M. P. Pandit notes: “Ananda, a supreme Bliss eternal, far other and higher in its character than the highest human joy or pleasure is the essential and original nature of the spirit. In Ananda our spirit will find its true self, in Ananda its essential consciousness, in Ananda the absolute power of its existence. The embodied soul’s entry into this highest absolute, unlimited, unconditional bliss of the spirit is the infinite liberation and the infinite perfection.” Ananda, when it manifests in the world through mind-life-body, takes on the forms we designate as Love, Joy, Pleasure. These are, naturally, limited terms in the limited creation, reflecting imperfectly the absolute Bliss of the Divine. They are limited because they are conditioned by the limitations of the Self of Matter, the Self of Life-Force and the Self of Mind, and thus, we tend to experience the absence or weakness of these forces in our human lives. At the Divine level, however, the Brahman does not suffer and has infinite Existence, absolute Consciousness and unconditioned Bliss. (Sri Aurobindo, The Upanishads, Taittiriya Upanishad, Brahmanandavalli, M. P. Pandit, Upanishads: Gateways of Knowledge) www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 5 Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss)

Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss) Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. April 2021. The Lower and the Higher Forms of Delight The Divine is not separate from the manifested world, so we could expect to see the outpouring of the Divine Delight, Ananda, in the external world. Sri Aurobindo observes: “For all joy, beauty, love, peace, delight are outflowings from the Ananda Brahman,–all delight of the spirit, the intellect, the imagination, aesthetic sense, ethical aspiration and satisfaction, action, life, the body. And through all ways of our being the Divine can touch us and make use of them to awaken and liberate the spirit.” The joy and delight that we can experience in the external world, however, is a weak, filtered and inconsistent form of the Ananda, not the intensity and purity of Ananda in its native form and on its native plane. Just as existence is filtered into an inconstant struggle for life, with death as a constant process, and just as consciousness is filtered into an ignorance that attempts to gain knowledge through acquisition of bits and pieces of information and through extrapolation, so too Ananda, bliss, is filtered into the experience of joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, satisfaction and dissatisfaction. We live in a world that has consciousness deeply involved and embedded in Matter, and systematically evolving out into ever higher, purer and more powerful forms, through life, mind, and the supramental planes until we can identify with and experience the pure force of Sat-Chit-Ananda in the fully evolved soul. Each level of evolution is more refined, more subtle and more powerful than the one before it. This is the key to attaining the higher form of delight. “But to reach the Ananda Brahman in itself the mental reception of it must be subtilised, spiritualised, universalised, discharged of everything that is turbid and limiting. For when we draw quite near or enter into it, it is by an awakened spiritual sense of a transcendent and a universal Delight which exists within and yet behind and beyond the contradictions of the world and to which we can unite ourselves through a growing universal and spiritual or a transcendental ecstasy.” (Sri Aurobindo, The Synthesis of Yoga, Part Three: The Yoga of Divine Love, Chapter 7) The Touch of the Divine Ananda Divine bliss, Ananda, is a different order of experience from what we know as joy in the vital life in the world. The experience of joy arises when we feel that a desire has been met, whether it is a physical desire or need that has been satisfied, providing a sensation of physical joy, or a vital or emotional desire or need which provides the excitement of a vital joy; or the satisfaction of various mental achievements, which provides mental joy. The Taittiriya Upanishad posits the situation of the human individual, young, healthy, radiant, successful, all desires being met, and this is consider to be the measure of one “human bliss”. It proceeds to show that there are numerous further levels of bliss, each one “a hundred and a hundredfold” greater than the preceding level. Interestingly each level of bliss is then equated with “the bliss of the vedawise, whose soul the blight of desire touches not.” The Upanishad here is pointing the way for the seeker to come to the realisation of these higher states of Ananda which cannot be even remotely compared with the human experience of joy. www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 6 Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss)

Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss) Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. April 2021. Sri Aurobindo elaborates: “But if the mind has once grown sufficiently subtle and pure in its receptions and not limited by the grosser nature of our outward responses to existence, we can take a reflection of it which will wear perhaps wholly or predominantly the hue of whatever is strongest in our nature. It may present itself first as a yearning for some universal Beauty which we feel in Nature and man and in all that is around us; or we may have the intuition of some transcendent Beauty of which all apparent beauty here is only a symbol. That is how it may come to those in whom the aesthetic being is developed and insistent and the instincts which, when they find form of expression, make the poet and artist, are predominant. Or it may be the sense of a divine spirit of love or else a helpful and compassionate infinite Presence in the universe or behind or beyond it which responds to us when we turn the need of our spirit towards it. So it may first show itself when the emotional being is intensely developed. It may come near to us in other ways, but always a Power or Presence of delight, beauty, love or peace which touches the mind, but is beyond the forms these things take ordinarily in the mind.” (Sri Aurobindo, The Synthesis of Yoga, Part Three: The Yoga of Divine Love, Chapter 7) Joy A hidden Bliss is at the root of things. SRI AUROBINDO Conversation with The Mother “There are other great Personalities of the Divine Mother, but they were more difficult to bring down and have not stood out in front with so much prominence in the evolution of the earth-spirit. There are among them Presences indispensable for the supramental realisation,—most of all one who is her Personality of that mysterious and powerful ecstasy and Ananda which flows from a supreme divine Love, the Ananda that alone can heal the gulf between the highest heights of the supramental spirit and the lowest abysses of Matter, the Ananda that holds the key of a wonderful divinest Life and even now supports from its secrecies the work of all the other Powers of the universe.” Sweet Mother, what Personality is this and when will she manifest? I have prepared my answer. I knew someone would ask me that, because of all things this is the most interesting in this passage, and I have prepared my answer. I have prepared my answer to this and my answer to another question also. But first I am going to read this one. You asked: “What personality is this and when will she come?” [Silence] And this is my reply: “She has come, bringing with her a splendour of power and love, an intensity of divine joy unknown to the earth so far. The physical atmosphere was completely changed by it, saturated with new and marvellous possibilities. But for her to be able to settle and act down here, she needed to meet with at least a minimum of receptivity, to find at least one human being having the requisite qualities in the vital and physical nature, a kind of super-Parsifal endowed with a spontaneous and integral purity, but at the same time www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 8 Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss)

Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss) Sri Aurobindo Society, Singapore. April 2021. having a strong and balanced body in order to bear the intensity of the Ananda she had brought without giving way. Till now she has not obtained what was necessary. Men obstinately remain men and do not want to or cannot become supermen. They can only receive and express a love cut to their measure—a human love! And the marvellous joy of the divine Ananda escapes their perception. So, at times, she thinks of withdrawing, finding that the world is not ready to receive her. And this would be a cruel loss. It is true that for the moment her presence is more nominal than active, for she does not have the opportunity to manifest herself. But even so, she is a powerful help in the Work. For, of all the aspects of the Mother, this is the one which has the greatest power for the transformation of the body. Indeed, the cells which are able to vibrate to the contact of divine joy, to receive and preserve it, are regenerated cells on the way to becoming immortal. But the vibrations of divine joy and those of pleasure cannot lodge together in the same vital and physical system. So one must have totally renounced experiencing all pleasure in order to be in a state to receive the Ananda. But very few are those who can renounce pleasure without, by the very fact, renouncing all participation in active life and plunging into a rigorous asceticism. And among those who know that it is in active life that the transformation must take place, some try to see pleasure as a more or less warped form of Ananda, and thus justify in themselves the quest for personal satisfaction, creating in themselves an almost insuperable obstacle to their own transformation.” (Sri Aurobindo, The Mother) March 2021 Sunday Activities at the Centre - A glimpse 7 March 2021: Savitri Reading Circle This programme follows our meditation on Savitri with Huta’s painting. Now is a chance for members to read the lines of Savitri and go deeper into what lies therein for them. For a start, what The Mother had said about Savitri was re-visited. Here is an excerpt from what was shared during the session: “It may then be said that Savitri is a revelation, it is a meditation, it is a quest of the Infinite, the Eternal. If it is read with this aspiration for immortality, the reading itself will serve as a guide to Immortality. To read Savitri is indeed to realise the Divine.” 14 March 2021: Readings on The Mother - Sri Aurobindo The following was the reading for this session: There are many planes of her creation, many steps of the Divine Shakti. At the summit of this manifestation of which we are a part there are worlds of infinite existence, consciousness, force and bliss over which the Mother stands as the unveiled eternal Power. All beings there live and move in an ineffable completeness and unalterable oneness, because she carries them safe in her arms for ever. The Mother as the Mahashakti of this triple world of the Ignorance stands in an intermediate plane between the supramental Light, the Truth life, the Truth creation which has to be brought down here and this mounting and descending hierarchy of planes of consciousness that like a double ladder lapse into the nescience of Matter and climb back again through the flowering of life and soul and mind into the infinity of the Spirit. She sends down emanations of them into these lower worlds to intervene, to govern, to battle and conquer, to lead and turn their cycles, to direct the total and the individual lines of their forces. She also prepares and shapes through these Powers and their emanations the minds and bodies of her Vibhutis, even as she prepares and shapes minds and bodies for the Vibhutis of the Ishwara, that she may manifest in the physical world and in the disguise of the human consciousness some ray of her power and quality and www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 9 Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss)

All the scenes of the earth-play have been like a drama arranged and planned and staged by her with the cosmic Gods for her assistants and herself as a veiled actor. 21 March 2021: The Mother’s Questions and Answers – Sri Aurobindo’s Aphorisms We resumed the session on Questions and Answers after a few years. It was delightful to take this up and this time the aphorisms and The Mother’s commentary on them were the central themes. Here are the aphorisms taken up: 81 – God’s laughter is sometimes very coarse and unfit for polite ears; He is not satisfied with being Moliere, He ` must needs also be Aristophanes and Rabelais. 82 – If men took life less seriously, they could very soon make it more perfect. God never takes His works seriously; therefore one looks out on this wonderful Universe. 83 – Shame has admirable results and both in aesthetics and in morality we could ill spare it; but for all that it is a badge of weakness and the proof of ignorance. One might ask how taking things seriously has prevented life from being more perfect. Sri Aurobindo - Thoughts and Aphorisms page 154 Jnana An excerpt from the commentary that was read out after a short discussion over members’ understanding of the aphorisms, is as follows: “… And this Sun, this Sun of divine laughter is at the centre of all things, the truth of all things: we must learn to see it, to feel it, to live it. And for that, let us avoid people who take life seriously; they are very boring people. As soon as the atmosphere becomes grave you can be sure that something is wrong, that there is a troubling influence, an old habit trying to reassert itself, which should not be accepted. All this regret, all this remorse, the feeling of being unworthy, of being at fault — and then one step further and you have the sense of sin. Oh! To me it all seems to belong to another age, an age of darkness.” 28 March 2021: Readings and Reflections – The Inner Journey The session began with a welcome to everyone ready to embark on an inner journey through readings, reflections and concentration. The participants were requested to keep a journal with them into which they can write their most intimate discoveries within or hidden feelings and thoughts to be offered in writing to The Divine and shared with the circle of participants if they wished. The first reflection question offered was to pen down how one perceives one’s life as a journey – where it began, what new chapters came, new places, new people – and in all these, to trace and record one’s inner state of being which they could remember and their existential questions, if at all they arose. Participants were also asked to somewhere pen down the destination that they envisioned or aspired for in this journey. We then read two prayers from The Mother’s Prayers and Meditations and read with concentration a page titled, Importance of Finding the Soul by The Mother. This was what the inner journey is all about and hence this page of writing was chosen for the day’s contemplation. A beautiful excerpt from the reading appears below: “… So there seems to be no other way out and that is to go in search of one’s soul and to find it. It is there, it does not make a point of hiding itself … On the contrary, it makes great efforts to help you find it and make itself heard.” - Jayanlakshmi, Ram, Shailaja, Jayanthy www.sriaurobindosociety.org.sg 10 Sat-Chit-Ananda (Ananda – Bliss)
