February 5, 2023 10:00 a.m. Fifth Sunday of Epiphany GOD’S PEOPLE GATHER Gathering Prelude “Arioso” Craig A. Penfield Ringing of the Church Parish Notes Invocation *Call To Worship Leader: The Lord be with you! People: And also, with you! Leader: Come, let us prepare for the coming of Christ. People: Together as the children of God with joy. Leader: Let us open our hearts and minds, People: and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Leader: May we be guided by the Spirit People: in our journey to follow Christ. Leader: Let us open our eyes to see and be guided by the light. People: That light of Jesus Christ. All: Emmanuel, God with us. A-MEN

*Opening Hymn UMH #700 “Abide with Me” 1. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. 2. Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away; change and decay in all around I see; O Thou who changest not, abide with me. 3. I need thy presence every passing hour. What but thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. 4. I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless; ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness. Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if thou abide with me. 5. Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes; shine through the gloom and point me to the skies. Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. Children’s Chat

Special Music Carol Hess “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” Joachini Neander & Stralsund Gesangbuch arranged by Shirley Brendlinger GOD’S WORD PROCLAIMED Prayer for Illumination: (in unison) God of all creation, you taught us how to live a loving and caring life through your son, Christ, the Anointed One. We have failed to follow that way as if we live in darkness. We feel scared and sometimes alone. We ask to be filled with your Heavenly Spirit. Strengthen us so we can follow the light of Christ and find the peace and joy that can only come through him and proclaim it to others. Amen Gospel Reading John 16:16-22,31-33 NIV Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.” At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”

Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Leader: The word of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. Message Ron Lucas, Lay Speaker Joy and Peace
