*Opening Hymn UMH#269 “Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days” Lord, who throughout these forty days For us did fast and pray Teach us with thee to mourn our sins And close by thee to stay As though with Satan didst contend, And didst the victory win, O give us strength in thee to fight, In thee to conquer sin As thou didst hunger bear, and thirst so teach us, gracious lord, To die to self, and chiefly live by thy most holy word. And through these days of penitence, And through thy passion tide, Yea, evermore in life and death, Jesus with us abide Abide with us, that so, This life of suffering over past, An Easter of unending joy We may attain at last.
Old Testament Reading Joel 2:1-2, 12- 16 Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming. It is close at hand, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. Like dawn spreading across the mountains a large and mighty army comes, such as never was in ancient times nor ever will be in ages to come. “Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing, grain offerings and drink offerings for the Lord your God. Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly. Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber. Let the priests, who minister before the Lord, weep between the portico and the altar. Let them say, “Spare your people, Lord. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”
* Responsive Reading Psalm 51:1-17 UMH#785 Cast me not away from your presence, And take not your Holy Spirit from me. * Gloria Patri UMH#70 Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was an the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen Gospel Reading Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21 \"Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. \"So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. \"And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. \"And
whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. \"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. INVITATION TO THE OBSERVANCE OF LENTEN DISCIPLINE Prayer Over The Ashes Imposition of Ashes Prayer of Confession (in unison) Most merciful God, we confess to you and to one another, that we lack any righteousness of our own, that we come before you unworthy of your love. We have often failed to be your people, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart, mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not forgiven others as we have been forgiven. We pray that your mercy be upon us.
Silent Confession Words of Assurance Closing Prayer The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.
