July 30, 2023 10:00 a.m. Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost GOD’S PEOPLE GATHER Gathering Prelude Carol Hess “Breathe On Me, Breath of God” Hymn Tune: Trentham by Robert Jackson Arranged by Terry M. Forsyth Ringing of the Church Bells Parish Notes Invocation *Call To Worship Leader: We come to worship the Triune God who creates, redeems, and sustains us all. People: We come to worship God who never leaves us and yet whose purposes often seem hidden. Leader: We gather today to learn how to watch, wait, and anticipate the season when God’s unrevealed work will come into the open.

People: We gather today to learn how to join in God’s dance as partners who prepare for the season when God’s unrevealed work comes into the open. Leader: We gather today to further learn from Jesus’ teachings to remain strong in faith and be faithful. People: We gather today to learn how to love as God loves so that we may be part of bringing God’s unrevealed work into the open. *Opening Hymn UMH#144 “This is my Father’s World” This is my Father's world, and to my listening ears all nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres. This is my Father's world: I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; his hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father's world, the birds their carols raise,

the morning light, the lily white, declare their maker's praise. This is my Father's world: he shines in all that's fair; in the rustling grass I hear him pass; he speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father's world. O let me ne'er forget that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet. This is my Father's world: why should my heart be sad? The Lord is King; let the heavens ring! God reigns; let the earth be glad. Children’s Chat GOD’S WORD PROCLAIMED Prayer for Illumination: (in unison) Guide us, O God, by your Word, and Holy Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom, and in your will discover peace. Amen. Old Testament Reading Psalm 119:129-136

Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands. Turn to me and have mercy on me, as you always do to those who love your name. Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. Redeem me from human oppression, that I may obey your precepts. Make your face shine on your servant and teach me your decrees. Streams of tears flow from my eyes, for your law is not obeyed. Special Music “How Great Thou Art” Carol Hess Swedish Folk Melody Arranged by Anne Britt Gospel Reading Matthew 13:31-33 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[a] of flour until it worked all through the dough.” Leader: The word of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God.
