Information Technology Information technology today and in the future does not constitute a separate sphere in our world that we can step in and out of – it is an integral part of our society, it is ubiquitous. It plays a pivotal role in enabling economic growth and the ICT architecture and solutions of the future will shape our world to a degree we have yet to grasp. Exploring new technologies and developing new applications in close relation and cooperation with the ICT industry is what the Information Technology program is all about. New trends, ranging from Ubiquitous Computing – using tomorrow’s ambient intelligence to shape today’s business – to Cloud Computing and Green ICT are but a few that we have an interest in. Our pedagogic approach examines the whole life cycle of products, from Conceiving and Designing to Implementation and Operation – CDIO. Close partnership with the twin program in English underscores our global focus. Future is what we engineer. Markku Karhu, M.Sc. Head of Information Technology Program in Finnish

The multicultural study environment in our InformationTechnology program mirrors the diversity and variety ofspecializations and subfields that today’s ICT covers. Directand constant involvement in the industry ensures that weknow what the companies want – our curriculum is designedto meet that need.Building on a solid foundation of math and physics, ourengineering students can specialize in Telecommunicationsand Networking, Software Engineering, and EmbeddedTechnology. Rapid changes and an innovative spirit arecharacteristics of the ICT field and just like the field itself, ourcurriculum is updated and upgraded in tandem with the mostrecent developments. The applications of Information Technology today and in thefuture are endless. The brightest minds with a creative edgehave the potential of literally changing the way our worldoperates. We work with them every day.Antti Piironen, Ph.D.Head of Information Technology Program in English

Media Technology Changes are rapid and unpredictable in technology and in the digital world. The driving force behind those changes is often the development of new engineering platforms and the young developers behind those innovative ideas. Training those talented young minds is what we do. Media engineering technologies cover everything from print media via multimedia production to internet technologies and mobile platforms. We still believe that engineers need math and physics skills – that’s why we call ourselves engineers. We study languages and business because engineers need to communicate and do business. The real core of the program is professional studies – from computing basics to high-end engineering study modules on mobile programming. Our students get a real taste of engineering by participating in R&D projects throughout their studies. By their graduation, they are ready to pass on the Finnish engineering spirit: ice clear thinking and practical, fully operational products on time. Harri Airaksinen, Lic.Sc. Head of Media Technology Program in Finnish

Information, education, news, entertainment, marketing andadvertising – media engineering professionals work withproducts and services connected to almost every area ofour lives. They make careers in media companies, softwarehouses, electronic documentation and publishing companies,as interactive TV and video producers, telecommunicationservice providers, or at open and distance learning institutions. And the list doesn’t end there. Our Media Engineering degrees give you the knowledge andskills to work in media production and management, mobilemedia applications, multimedia and internet, e-services,audiovisual technology, network video and digital television, and digital printing and publishing. Engineering educationis combined with expertise in product design, productionprocesses, communication skills and marketing. For theright mix, add the most modern technology, teamwork in amulticultural team of more than 30 nationalities and directparticipation in industry-led projects. Formula of success fortomorrow and beyond.Erkki Aalto, MSocSc.Head of Media Engineering Program in English

Health Through Technology

Health InformaticsFinland has the most rapidly aging population amongWestern European countries. Maintaining the wellbeing ofpeople of all ages by supporting their individual needs withmodern embedded and non-intrusive technologies is a majorchallenge in the developing of user-friendly technologies anddesign methods. The key is learning from user experiences andengineering ethics.Supporting the Nordic concept of wellbeing with cost-effective information systems, such as the interoperabilityof personal health records, automated data collection, andpersonnel and assets tracking provides major opportunities forapplied research in multi-disciplinary programs. Anchored onthe strengths of other ICT-based programs, Health Informaticstaps into the expertise of Helsinki Metropolia UAS Schools ofHealth Care and Social Services to offer a unique combinationof engineering and applied, project-oriented developmentwork.Having made a long career in the ICT industry before joiningthe academia, I see new windows of opportunity opening. We welcome visiting students and joint industry-drivendevelopment teams to work in our laboratories – together wecan build a better tomorrow.Kari Björn, Lic.Sc.Head of Health Informatics Program

Finland Finland is a Nordic country known for its clean and pristine nature. The thousands of lakes, islands and forests that dot its landscape make it a nature lover’s paradise. With a climate warmer than the absolute latitude suggests, Finland has four distinct seasons which make it a fascinating place to visit all year round. As a highly industrialized free-market economy Finland is keenly integrated into the global economy through trade. The largest industries are electronics, machinery, vehicles and other engineered metal products, forest industry and chemicals. Finland is a member of the EU, OECD, UN, WTO, and the eurozone. Finland continuously excels in international comparisons of national performance in areas such as education, health care and wellbeing, political stability, economic prosperity and competitiveness, quality of life as well as absence of corruption. Bordering Sweden in the West and Russia in the East, Finland is a gateway to both East and West with a unique political history and culture that reflect this geopolitical reality.

Education in FinlandThe Finnish education system is an egalitarian Nordic system.Private schools are rare and no tuition fees are charged fromfulltime students. Higher education offers two alternativepaths: the traditional research universities and the neweruniversities of applied sciences. Instead of producing basicresearch, the universities of applied sciences focus oninnovation and finding new ways of applying existing researchresults, usually in joint projects and close cooperation with therelevant industries.ICT in FinlandFinland emerged in the 1990s as one of the world’s mosttechnology-intensive countries, and is today a global leaderin ICT innovation and high quality ICT products. The field iswider than just the mobile cluster driven by Nokia – numerousfast-growing small and medium-sized companies have foundthe competitive edge, many of them with embedded softwarefor instance. Strong consumer demand for ICT products andservices, easy access to public R&D funding and developernetworks, combined with first-rate availability of talentedand qualified ICT engineers all contribute to making Finland aforerunner in the ICT field.
