LAPORAN PRESIDENPRESIDENT’S REPORTTan Sri Datuk Dr Tahun ini, sambutan 50 tahun kemerdekaanYusof Basiron, FASc Malaysia, sungguh bermakna kepada Negara kita. Tahun ini akan terpahat diPresiden, Akademi Sains Malaysia ingatan buat selama-lamanya; keranaPresident, Academy of Sciences Malaysia selaras dengan visi kita menjadi sebuah Negara kompetitif, Malaysia telah menjangkau peningkatan yang cemerlang dan memperoleh pengiktirafan global dalam arena sains angkasa. Kita telah berjaya meletakkan seorang insan di angkasa lepas—seorang angkasawan anak watan. Kejayaan ini merupakan hasil dedikasi ramai individu yang bertungkus- lumus tanpa mengenal penat lelah dalam menzahirkan program angkasa ini, terutamanya diterajui oleh Kementerian Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi (MOSTI); dan Akademi juga turut berbangga kerana telah memainkan peranan. This year, 50 years after Independence, has indeed been a significant one for our nation. It will be etched in memory for time immemorial; for in line with our vision of becoming a competitive nation, we saw a meteoric rise and global recognition of Malaysia in the arena of space science. We have put a man in space—our own cosmonaut. This was due to the dedication of many who have strived hard to realise this space programme, principally spear-headed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI); and the Academy is also proud to have had played its part in this.
