Chinese wedding dress in Tang dynasty combines solemnity of Zhou dynasty and the joy of later ages. The groom wears red dress while the bride wears green dress. Based on long sleeve dressing with flower hairpin, the 钗钿礼服 (chai dian li fu) is developed in late Tang dynasty. The characteristic of the attire is lots of layers and long sleeves. Kimono in Japan is developed from this wedding attire. Wearing this wedding attire, the bride has to match with a hairpin made of metals and jewels. After Tang dynasty, the sophisticated 钗钿礼服(chai dian li fu)is simplified. 梁冠礼服 (liang guan li fu) for groom 11 钗钿礼衣 (chai dian li yi) for bride Figure 3 Tang Wedding Dress

Figure 4 Ming Wedding Dress 13 From Ming dynasty to modern China, taking wife is a small civil examination for Chinese men, so the wedding attire for groom is the ninth-rank officer’s costume ( 九品官服 jiu pin guan fu), and phoenix coronet and robes of rank (凤冠霞帔feng guan xia pei) is for bride. 凤冠(Feng guan) is the most honourable ornaments for ancient women. 凤冠霞帔 (Feng guan xia pei) has been wedding attire since Ming dynasty. Bride’s 凤冠霞帔(Feng guan xia pei) includes phoenix coronet, red veil, red gown, descendent bag, red dress, and red shoes and so on. This wedding attire is regarded as the most classic and representative one among all Chinese wedding dress. Most Chinese couple today will choose at least two styles when they take wedding pictures, one is western wedding attire, the other is Chinese wedding dress for its exquisite beauty.

旗袍 Qipao 15 旗袍 Figure 6 Qipao In recent years, there are mainly two kinds of traditional Chinese wedding dress popular, 旗袍(qi pao) and 龙凤褂 (long feng gua). The traditional Chinese wedding dress popular in northern Chinese is one piece frock named 旗袍(qi pao), which is red mainly and embroidered with gold and silver design. However, brides in Southern China prefer to wear two-piece dress named 龙凤褂(long feng gua), in which 龙(long)means dragon, 凤(feng) means phoenix, and 褂(gua) means coat and dress. Basically, 龙凤褂(long feng gua) is the dress that design and embroidery with dragon and phoenix.

龙凤褂 Figure 7 Longfenggua 16 龙凤褂(Longfenggua) is quite popular these days. It’s an indispensable Chinese wedding dress in China. Patterned with dragon and phoenix, the Longfenggua is endowed with their auspicious meaning. Besides dragon and phoenix, five embroidered bats, with the meaning of five blessing arrival, also appear in Longfenggua. The longfenggua is more simplified and it can show women’s curvaceous shape. In this project, I will take 龙凤褂(Longfenggua) as an example of Chinese traditional dress and redesign it. 龙凤褂 Longfenggua

凤冠 Chinese Phoenix Coronets Figure 9 Chinese Phoenix 18 Chinese Phoenix Coronet(凤冠) , means phoenix crown, is the most hon- ourable ornaments for ancient women. Phoenix coronets have been an impor- tant part of Chinese wedding attire since Ming dynasty. This wedding attire is considered as the most classic and rep- resentative one among all Chinese wed- ding dress. Phoenix coronets were first started in Ming Dynasty in ancient China. At that time, phoenix coronet and robe of rank (feng guan xia pei凤冠霞帔) were the proper wedding dress for bride.

Figure 11 Tro d i ti o n a l w e d d i ng shoes During the wedding ceremony, 20 Traditional Chinese the bride usually wears a special Wedding Shoes pair of wedding shoes. The bride has to wear a pair of shoes em- broidered with patterns of a turtle or a deer in the past, which sym- bolizes blessing, happiness and longevity after marriage. These kinds of shoes are made with red and green fabric and usually with a soft sole. In some regions, rela- tives who make such shoes for bride can receive good fortune, while in other areas, they are made by the bride and another single girl in the morning of the wedding day. The whole setting of traditional wedding is complex, in this design project, I will focus on the dress part first and leave the coronet and shoes for the future design.

Interactive 21 technologies And Fashion The interactive technologies that being used in fashion design are various, includ- ing 3D and 4D printed fashion, IOT in fashion, wearable technologies and smart fabric.

IOT The IOT used in fashion design are 23 Figure 14 IOT i n fa sh i on popular in recent years, take Synapse Dress as an example. Synapse Dress reads the wearers emotions and even lights up. The interactive dress itself is printed using a flexible material named Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) and can pick up signals from all over the wearer’s body. It is equipped with an EKG, as well as a proximity sensor, a camera, and a series of LED lights capable of 120 watts of brightness. The proximity sensors tell if the wearer feels uncomfortable or threatened, making the dress light up.

Wearable 24 Devices Speak of wearable devices in fashion industry, the interactive jewellery design is a promising area. There is a smart jewelry named Ringly. The blingy cocktail rings can alert you of any incoming or missed calls or messages from your phone, without the need for bulky accessories. The rings are made with real gemstones and charge in their own special box. Notifications can be managed inside the Ringly app, with an LED light on the side of the ring able to flash five different colours in four different patterns to alert you to updates. A phone call, for example, could make the ring buzz four times and flash red. A tweet could flash blue and vibrate once. Figure 15 Ringly
