We started the year with a clean up We have completed over 42 projects of registered Juniors after the new and events this year across the city GDPR legislation and this did lower with 840 Junior spaces available. The our numbers. We have however had projects have been very successful a steady increase in numbers over and achieved excellent media the year from 85 to 107 at present. coverage in local press. This takes into account those leaving the scheme for a variety of reasons. We have also had another great year in attendance at projects with an average 98% of spaces available being filled. We have also run 16 after school and Half Term sports projects, engaging with over 350 people in the community. We have also run 26 intergenerational evenings, visited the Theatre for Panto and the Fire Station for bonfire night and much more.

We have continued and expanded our Intergen project with Juniors at Weston Court and now at Fairfax Court supported housing. Working jointly with the residents we have run a program of intergenerational evening activities. From 5:30 to 7:30pm every other Thursday the Junior Wardens and the residents get together to enjoy an evening of education, fun, games and most importantly social interaction. We are also hoping to expand this further this coming year.

We have run a number of after school & Half Term engagements across the city in partnership with Active Nation and Park Lives. We have been in Northam, Holyrood, Millbrook & Shirley engaging with the local residents with over 360 people attending across all sessions. Through this we have gained an additional 12 Junior Warden applications and raised awareness of the scheme. This has also been a great opportunity for our Wardens to get to know people on their patches & promote a sense of community.

Joint Working with other Council Services City wide community litter picks as part of the Great British Spring Clean Junior Neighbourhood Wardens SCC Waste Team and Bitterne Litter Team (volunteers) joined forces for a Southampton wide clean-up as part of this year’s Keep Britain Tidy, Great British Spring Clean campaign. Housing areas in Golden Grove in St Marys, Meggeson Avenue in Townhill, and the wider Lordswood area received a tidy-up on the 16, 17 and 18 April respectively, courtesy of the Junior Neighbourhood Wardens. As well as doing their bit for the local community and the environment, the young wardens were incentivised to seek out litter by also undertaking an Easter Egg hunt at the same time. The Councils Recycling Team were also present to give the Juniors a lesson on recycling, and helping to separate the rubbish into trash or recycling before it was taken away. A special thanks to Neighbourhood Wardens and the Waste Team who supported every event. The teams filled 160 black bags and removed a large amount of bulk waste totalling 2.7 tonnes of rubbish! Townhill Litter Group, thank you to all involved Golden Grove Litter Group, thank you to all involved including staff from the local Tesco’s store in St Marys Lordswood Litter Group, thank you to all involved including Phil Space who provided a portaloo for the event. We supported the Southampton ABP Marathon again this year. Supporting this great event is not only a service to the city but gives a great lesson in teamwork. A big thanks to all the Juniors and Parent Volunteers that helped out on the day. As a thank you to them all, we went on an adventure day at Woodmill activity centre, using the £250 cheque from ABP/Rees Leisure.

This year has been busy on the Junior Warden Facebook page. This is a closed group for obvious reasons, but allows us to share information with parents.  Video’s  Photo’s  News  Events  Information from other council groups  Things to get involved in across the city We also do surveys and feedback from parents on activities and ideas. We currently have 131 members with an average of 84 views per post. The best part is parents talking and helping each other with reminders, transport, additional activities and services in the city. This is a fantastic tool for communication and is working really well. We also support parents to set up accounts if they don’t have one, to ensure they don’t miss out.
