What is fasting? Fasting is abstaining from inserting any substance into the head or the body cavity through an open inlet including water, medicine or otherwise between Fajr (the true dawn) and Maghrib (sunset) while having the proper intention. Fajr is the true dawn which is the horizontal whiteness that appears in the eastern horizon. Maghrib is the complete setting of the sun. Lessons Calendar

How fasting was obligated? The obligation of fasting Ramadan is known from the Qur'an. Ayah 183 of Suratul Baqarah means: \"O believers fasting is an obligation upon you as it was ordained upon the Muslim Nations before you to help you become pious\". However, fasting Ramadan in particular is a specification for the nation of Prophet Muhammad. Lessons Calendar

Who must fast? Every accountable Muslim is obligated to fast the month of Ramadan. The fasting of a menstruating or postpartum- bleeding woman is not valid; however, they have to make up the missed days. Even if fasting is not tedious, it is permissible for the traveller of a shortening distance (qasr) not to fast. Breaking the fast is permissible for the sick person, the pregnant woman, and the nursing woman who cannot bear the hardship of fasting. However, they are obligated to make up the missed days. Lessons Calendar
