Integumentary System Table of contents

Integumentary System- One important structure of the integumentary system would be the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of the skin. Its job is to protect the deeper layers of the skin. Also there is the dermis, which is the layer of skin under the epidermis. It is what gives skin its strength and elasticity. The bottom layer of skin is called the hypodermis (subcutaneous) layer. It is responsible for the connection between skin and the muscles and bones. Also there are glands that help the body stay at the right temperature, prevent dryness, and prevent infections. Lastly there is hair and nails. Hair helps keep us warm, and nails help protect us as well as allow us to scratch. Table of contents

Integumentary System-The function of the integumentary system is to protect the body, give us an ideaof our surroundings, regulate body temperature, absorb medicines, excretewaste, and store things such as fats, sugars, water, salt, and water. Table of contents

Integumentary System-Diseases/Abnormal Conditions- ● One thing people can suffer from is a cold sore which is a blister that occur on the lip or around the lip. Another thing is vitiligo which is a loss of color in the skin. Table of contents

Integumentary System-Health Careers- ● One career involving the integumentary system is a dermatologist, which is a skin doctor. They are who you would consult if you have any significant skin problem. Another career is a plastic surgeon, which is someone who reconstructs/repairs parts of the body. They do this to treat injury or for cosmetic purposes. Table of contents

Musculoskeletal System Table of contents

Musculoskeletal System-The function of the Musculoskeletal system is to give the body framework, supportsthe body, protects organs, allow movement, storage of minerals, forms blood, keepsthe body warm, and helps push blood throughout the body. Table of contents

Musculoskeletal System ● Bones: They provide support for the body, store minerals, produce blood cells, and protect organs. ● Joints: This is where two bones connect, and different joints allow different ranges of motion. ● Tendons: These attach muscle to bone. ● Ligaments: These attach bone to bone. ● Cartilage: This gives support, and keeps bones from causing friction with other bones. ● Muscles: They contract and relax to allow the body to move. Musculoskeletal System-Diseases/Disorders:Some people suffer from Bradykinesia which is extreme slowness in musclemovement. Another possible disease/disorder is arthritis which is when jointsbecome inflamed. Table of contents

Musculoskeletal System-Health Careers: ● One career is a Podiatric Medical Assistant makes castings of feet, takes x-rays, and assists a foot doctor in surgery. Another career is an Athletic Trainer, which works to prevent and treat athletic injuries. They also help athletes heal from injury. Athletic trainers provide massage, corrective exercises, diet supervision, and equipment fittings. Table of contents

Digestive SystemThe function of the digestive system is to break food down into smaller parts,absorb nutrients, and excrete waste. Table of contents

Digestive System 1. Mouth: is where food enters and begins to be broken down both chemically and physcially. 2. Esophagus: pathway from the mouth to the stomach. 3. Stomach: is where food is further broken down chemically and physically. 4. Small intestine: organ responsible for absorbing nutrients from the food. 5. Pancreas: a gland located behind the stomach that secretes enzymes that help with digestion. 6. Gallbladder: an organ that stores bile produced by the liver. 7. Liver: large organ, makes bile and filters blood 8. Large intestine: main function is to absorb water. Table of contents

Digestive SystemDiseases/Disorders- ● One disorder involved with the digestive system is Anorexia which is a lack or loss of appetite for food. Another thing people can suffer from is gastritis which is inflammation of the stomach. Table of contents

Digestive SystemCareers-One career would be a Gastroenterologist which is a doctor who specializes inthe diseases of the digestive tract and liver. Another career would be a dentist. Adentist diagnoses and treats diseases of the teeth and gums. Table of contents

Urinary SystemThe urinary system’s function is to eliminate waste produced by trying to keepthe body in a state of equilibrium. Table of contents

Urinary System ● Kidney: responsible for filtering wastes out of the blood to form urine. ● Ureter: tube that acts as a pathway from the kidney to the bladder. ● Urethra: tube that acts as a pathway from the bladder to the outside of the body. ● Bladder: a hollow muscular sac that stores urine. Urinary SystemDiseases/disorders- ● One disorder of the urinary system is nocturnal enuresis. This is also known as bedwetting, and is when you involuntary pee while you sleep. Another disease/disorder is Cystalgia which is pain in the urinary bladder. Table of contents

Urinary SystemOccupations- ● One career involving the urinary system is a Urologist. An Urologist is a doctor who specializes in the diseases of the urinary organs. Another career is a Nephrologist. A Nephrologist is a doctor for kidneys. Table of contents

Nervous SystemFunction- ● Coordinates and controls all bodily activities. Table of contents

Nervous System ● Nerves: are responsible responsible sending and receiving signals throughout the body. ● Brain: responsible for coordination, intellectual activity, and keeping the body functioning properly. ● Spinal cord- connects the brain and the nerves to send and receive signals. Nervous SystemDiseases/Disorders- ● One disease involving the nervous system is Alzheimer’s disease which is a group involved with progressive memory loss, poor cognition ( process of obtaining information and understanding it), and personality changes. People can also suffer from encephalitis which is inflammation of the brain. Table of contents

Nervous SystemCareer Opportunities- ● Polysomnographic technologist- administers sleep disorder evaluations ● Neurosurgeon- perform surgery on the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves to remove tumors, relieve chronic pain and treat wounds, vascular disorders and diseases such as Parkinson's and epilepsy. Special SensesThe function of the special senses system is to allow the body to react to theenvironment by providing information such as sight, hearing, taste, and smell(also balance). Table of contents

Special SensesNose: Its primary purpose is to smell, and allow air into the body.Tongue: Its primary purpose is to taste.Eyes: Its primary purpose is to enable us to see our surroundings.Ears: Its primary purpose is to let us hear sounds.

Special SensesCareer Opportunities:One occupation is an Ocularist which is an eye doctor who specializes in makingartificial eyes for people. Another occupation is an Audiologist who is a personwho provides care to individuals with hearing problems. They also test,diagnose, and prescribes treatment hearing problems. Table of contents

Another thing that can happen that is more common is a MyocardialInfarction. A Myocardial Infarction is also known as a heart attack. A heart attackis a result the heart muscle not receiving blood. Cardiovascular SystemOccupations-One occupation in cardiology is a Cardiologist which is a heart doctor. Anothercareer is a cardiovascular technician which is someone who helps doctorsdiagnose blood vessel problems by using images and technology. Table of contents

Respiratory SystemThe function of the respiratory system is to supply the blood with oxygen inorder for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. Table of contents

Respiratory SystemDisease/Disorder- ● One thing people can suffer from is Asthma which is a condition that causes airways to be narrower and swelled which makes it difficult to breathe. Another thing is Pneumonia which is an infection that inflames air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid. Table of contents

Respiratory SystemCareer Opportunities- ● One career in this field is a Pulmonologist which is a doctor who is trained in diagnosing and treating lung conditions and diseases. Another career is a Respiratory Therapist which is someone who is trained in managing the airways after trauma. Table of contents
