From the Editor Viewpoint Readers! Writer Paul Auster once said that a publication doesn’t only belong to the writer, but to the reader as well. Viewpoint Magazine is not the collection of papers you are holding, but the hundred and fifty personal experiences that will arise from our readers. It is intangible. It is conceptual. And that’s exactly what makes this shared experience all the more noteworthy. Because the papers will decay, but the ideas will be imprinted on your minds, passed on to your lovers, passed on to your colleagues, passed on to your children. Together, and only together, we make it what it is. As an editor, my job is to disappear, to vanish in the way between our writers and you, the reader. But as a director, my goal is to vitalize contrasting notions that will provoke the readers and writers alike, forthrightly question their values, and mutually inspire intellectual growth. The arduous work was made possible by the efforts of our 13 gifted writers and our irreplaceable advisor, Mrs. Angeles. I hope this year-long experience will be a beneficial one for all of us. Highlights A Fun Day to End the Quarter By: Sun Jin Lee forward to the field day. They get encouraged by high school students and find self-worth while participating the activities. Field day has a great impact on the elementary students.” In support of this crew, the secondary school also decided to join the Friday fun. High school students will skip their instructor access and third periods to be present at the field and have fun time with the elementary students. Once all the activities are finished, both high school and elementary students will be off to their fall break! On 11 October, 2013, Mountainview will th hold a field day for all secondary and elementary students. Earlier this year, secondary teachers decided not to have a field day. However, elementary teachers argued that MICS students should have a field day because the interaction between young and old students would be healthy and beneficial to the school body. One of the elementary teachers, Ms. Sherry, said “Many elementary students look The Electronic Library By: Kezia Surjadi A Kindle and twenty e-books are now available at the secondary library. Glance Back at First Quarter By: Moze Simanjuntak As the first quarter ends, dozens of events highlight this phase of this school year! Weekly bake sales from the Freshmen, Juniors and Seniors keep the school well fed and pot-bellied. Preparing and serving in the bake sales have been fun, sticky for many of us. From Coca Cola, ice cream floats, to chicken, pizza, and corn dogs, delightful culinary feasts sure to appease your appetite! Meanwhile in the classrooms, teachers are integrating new and fun ways for students to study. Ms. Peter offers crazy weekly lab experiments to make biology more interesting. Mrs. Angeles attempts to lighten the arguably boring book, “The Hobbit,” with treasure hunts along with various other creative and fun activities. Mr. Evans regularly plays hilarious videos to brighten up the atmosphere. Mrs. McGavran invites guest speakers, such as Mr. Fosdahl to speak in Junior Bible class. In terms of extra-curricular activities, more Battle of the Books teams convenes as the competition draws ever closer. In the Gym, various sports teams are already practicing and competing in their respective fields. Recently, MICS organized a volleyball tournament for local schools in Salatiga. Six teams participated. Although our team did not win, the volleyball team is still very pleased because it was a great experience just to bond with local people and strengthen our relationships. Last but not the least, teachers constantly remind students of this one important thing: “Don’t forget to have enough sleep!” There is an ongoing campaign encouraging students to have at least 8 hours of sleep. Studying and games are awesome, but so are extra hours of comfortable sleep, they say. 4

Lifestyle Tablet and PC Combined? By Paul Handali Android technology has recently been skyrocketing with the release of new phones which just get better and better, like the Samsung S4. However, a new use for android software has been developed: computer software. That’s right! A PC! Cnet.com has reported that Acer has recently developed a PC with android technology: The Acer DA241HL. It is one of the first PC’s to use android software and a tablet core processor. This device comes with many special features. Listed below are a few. Special features: The DA241HL runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, allowing it to access android apps. It is both a computer and a monitor which can be tilted between angles of 20 and 75 degrees, allowing users to see the screen from almost anywhere. The screen is a 24 inch touchscreen, and can also be used as a monitor for a regular PC. The touchscreen continues to work while its connected to another PC, and the Acer can also sync with regular android devices to enable movies and games to be played on a larger screen. Despite all these features, Cnet.com has revealed a possible fault with the product. Android apps may not work well on the Acer because they are designed for smaller screens. Technology advances very rapidly these days, and thank God that there are people who have the passion to make it continue to do so. Will this interesting new idea be a hit in the technology market? Only time will tell. He also notes that ASU has a lot of helpful resources such as tutoring for almost every class, counselors, and study abroad programs. 6

The Conductor By Mary Smith If you have been at Mountainview for a year or more, you have probably seen the school orchestra in action. This group of talented people have grown from a little group of elementary kids to a beautiful band of young musicians. But our orchestra would not have been possible without a certain individual who took it upon herself to start and maintain the group. You have probably seen her conducting when the orchestra performs. But what you don’t see is the amount of work she puts into it – writing the music for all the different instruments, helping each group of instruments with its part, and most of all, how she got there. As a child, Jenny Smith enjoyed playing instruments. Her attraction to music began one day when her parents brought out an old violin from their attic. “Oh, I would like to learn that,” she decided. She began formal piano lessons at Indonesia with her husband and children. She began age 7 and violin lessons at age 9. One day she grew the school orchestra at Mountainview because she frustrated as she was practicing her violin. Her wanted to provide a place where her children could frustration sparked a thought, a decision that would play music with other young musicians, just like she impact the rest of her life. She decided that she had as a child. COACH Homberto By Bethany Armistead him “losing something in his knee” and not being able to “feel” it. This kept him from playing soccer for a year and a half. At eighteen he resumed his soccer career and played for another two years. It was at this point in his life when he met his wife. She gave him a choice: ‘football or me. Up till now I miss her,’ he joked (because he actually married her). It was also in that time that he came to know Jesus. With his family’s poverty still weighing closely on his heart, he realized that change in his family could not come from a successful soccer career, but from Jesus. ‘I could take them from the slum, but they would still be in a spiritual slum, even if I was a rich man,’ Homberto recollected. But praise the Lord, now most of his family has come to know Christ. ‘With my family becoming Christian; I feel that we’re Urban Dictionary defines passion as: “an ambition millionaires.’ that is materialized into action; to put as much heart, In the third year of his marriage he felt that God was mind, body, and soul into something as is possible”. calling him into missions.
