ISRO \"India's most SuccessfulStart up\" with R. AravamudanEvent ratings:In Conversation with R. Aravamudanmoderated by Rahul Matthan WhenMangalayan reached Mars, ISRO became justthe fourth space agency in the world tosuccessfully enter Mars orbit and the only oneto do so in its first attempt. In the course of thisyear, ISRO set a world record by launching 104satellites with a single rocket and successfullylaunched its heaviest rocket to date - the GSLVMark III - with 4 ton satellite payload. ISRO istruly India’s most successful organisation. But the early days of the space organizationwere very different. Budgets were meagre, equipment was hard to come by andtechnology was often denied to us due to tradeembargoes. Our first attempts at launching satellites were replete with failures with more rocketscrashing into the Bay of Bengal than reaching outer space. In many ways, the history of ISRO is a story of learning from failure and turning adversity intoadvantage - of making do with what we had, innovating and achieving success even when everyoneelse expected us to fail. Much of its current success is due to the visionary zeal of Vikram Sarabhaiand his small team of pioneering scientists. One of the first people he recruited wasRamabhadranAravamudan, who went on to serve as Director of the Thumba Equatorial RocketLaunching Station, Associate Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Director of SatishDhawan Space Centre, SHAR and Director of the ISRO Satellite Centre.EO Bangalore presented its first event of the year - a discussion with R Aravamudan - pioneer of theIndian Space program and one of the few men alive who has been with ISRO from the very beginning. He spoke to us about those early days when it was still a startup, about the challenges of having toscale, of learning from failures and the need to constantly innovate.July 13th 2017 | 7:30 PMThe Oberoi, Bengaluru
