Simple Carbohydrates vs Complex Carbohydrates: A guide for healthy diet Simple carbohydrates are made up of just one or two sugar molecules which can be easily broken down & absorbed as Glucose in the bloodstream. It, therefore, spikes up sugar level. Since it is easily digestible, the body demands more food to be consumed which ultimately results in eating more than required by the body & a reason for putting on undesirable weight. Some foods that contain simple carbohydrates include processed foods like candy, syrups & beverages among others. These do not contain slow digestive elements such as fibre & lack nutritional value. However some healthy foods that contain simple carbohydrates include fruit & milk. On the other hand complex carbohydrates are made of a complex chain of sugar molecules which takes considerable longer time to digest. As such they do not raise sugar level like simple carbohydrates do. It contains fibre that helps the body to maintain metabolism level, thereby avoiding overeating. Some good foods that contain complex carbohydrates include brown rice, quinoa, barley, bulgur, oatmeal, other whole grains, starchy vegetables, sweet potatoes, corn, and legumes (kidney beans, chickpeas). Whole Grains, legumes & starchy vegetables provide fibre to the body which controls cholesterol level & are important for intestinal health. While planning a healthy diet, one should prefer to have more complex carbohydrates rich in fibre content such as vegetables, dairy products, whole grains & legumes.
