I would really like to have a more homely and functional 60% bamboo/40%/cotton, mix of flowers and herbs in our outdoor space, typical of cottage gardens, which 100g/250m/273yds became popular in the 1870s as a reaction to more formal designs. One of the Yarn A: Natural 7146 x 2 balls positives of a garden of this type is that they are more easily maintained as the Yarn B: Apricot 7130 x 1 ball compact planting leaves little space for weeds – something I really like the idea of! Yarn C: Raisin 7158 x 1 ball Crocheted flowers are my favourite thing to make and I adore adding beads into my Yarn D: Rose 7165 x 1 ball work too, so this project was a real joy to design. I wanted to create a vintage feel Yarn E: Spring Green 7126 and chose my yarn shades accordingly. I think the little lime green beads provide x 1 ball a lovely pop of colour on the leaves of the dainty crochet blooms. A life in yarn All the colours of the rainbow With a passion for purple, socks and mini-skeins, crochet designer and independent yarn dyer Vicki Brown reveals her colourful life in yarn. By LINDSEY HARRAD From sun ny yellow socks to rainbow slippers and the dappled pin ks of her Min atsu Shawl, Chelten ham -based crochet designer and independent yar n dyer Vicki Brown’s pat ter n s are often a celebration of colour. She adm its to having a par ticular fondness for pur ple and says it’s a str uggle not to use too much pur ple in her work. “I’m m ost drawn to rainbow colours and I do have a th ing for pur ple,” she laugh s. “Fun n ily enough I don’t tend to wear a lot of colour and generally wear black clothes, but I like colour ful accessor ies, especially shawls and socks.” Pur ple proved to be Vicki’s lucky colour when she subm itted her first design to In side Crochet and was com m issioned, around 11 years ago. “In side Crochet published my very first pattern the Lacy Sweater, a pur ple cotton lace sweater, which was ver y exciting and the beginning of my professional design career,” she says. Although Vicki had been crocheting on and off since childhood, the progression into her career was gradual and organ ic. However, her rather m aver ick approach to crocheting without patterns reflected an early talent for design. “My m ater n al grandm a taught m e to crochet when I was around 10 years old, and then when I was a student I got back into it again,” she says. “I never worked from a pat ter n, I always just m ade up m y own th ings. I had a stitch diction ar y so I’d just m ake scar ves using different stitches, and then that developed into thinking that m aybe I could create m y own pat ter n s. Because I’m the sor t of person who decides they can do someth ing and then just gets on and does it, I had a go at wr iting a crochet pat ter n and that’s how the Lacy Sweater that I sent to In side Crochet cam e about. And ever yth ing went from there.” From designing to dyeing Vicki has been the creator of som e of In side Crochet ’s stand-out pat ter n s over the years, with a talent for creating a simple design with an in novative detail or unexpected t wist, including the simple elegance of the Bexh ill Tee, the gran ny square-in spired Beatrice Cardigan, the open Leonie Cardigan in Catherine Wheel stitch and the daringly different lace-backed Hannah Tee. After working as a designer for around four years, Vicki star ted exper imenting with yarn dyeing. “I’d bought a packet of dyes at the Wonderwool show one year along with some undyed yarn, 38 Inside Crochet

Issue 34 intending to give it a go, and I just thought I’d have a play with dyeing just for fun. I cer tain ly never thought I’d do it com mercially, m ainly because of the messiness, the taking up of space, and all the other things that go hand-in-hand with yarn dyeing. Also, the first few skeins I dyed got into such a terrible messy tangle that I thought I could never do this for anyone but myself! “But I liked the idea of having m y own yar n s to crochet with, the oppor tun it y to create the colours that work per fectly with m y pat ter n s. I just enjoyed having that complete creative control over the finished piece.” Although it star ted just for fun as a way to create yar n for her own use, after Vicki designed som e shawls to m ake with her hand-dyed yar n, an oppor tun it y to also sell her yar n opened up. “Som e fr iends suggested I should sell m y yar n as a package with the shawl pat ter n s, wh ich I had n’t previously con sidered doing. So, I launched a Shawl Club and ever y other m onth I’d send out a skein of yar n and a shawl patter n. Pre-selling the subscr iption s gave m e the incom e to buy all the yar n, so there was no big in itial outlay, and then I also star ted selling the yar n separately. The business just grew from there. I was surprised at how quickly it took off actually, and it wasn’t long before I had to hire someone to help me. I promoted my yar n on In stagram and exhibited at lots of shows. Yarndale was my first ever show, and I’ll be there again in September this year.” Finding a niche Vicki adm its to having been resistant to com m it to r un n ing a yar n dyeing business in itially, m ain ly because she felt it was a crowded m arket already. “Over tim e I just realised that you just have to find your own style and do what you do, and not worry about everyone else,” she says. “A friend of mine, Daisy from Devon Sun Yarns, said something to me, when I felt like ever yone was dyeing yar n and there wasn’t space for m e, and that was ‘y ou’re not dyeing yar n and whatever you do won’t be like ever yone else’. It m ade m e realise that there’s always room for another yarn dyer doing things their own way.” As you’d expect from som eone who loves colour, Vicki’s yar n embraces the whole spectr um , from the br ight pin ks of her Fairview sock yarn to the vibrant purple of Violacea DK or the www.insidecrochet.co.uk 39

\"Design and yarn go hand in hand - if you have patterns to sell then people need yarn, so they complement each other\" speckled hand-painted glor y of colour ways such as Rosy Apple “When I first started yarn dyeing, I worked out of my kitchen at or Stor m clouds and Rainbows. Ever y skein is hand-dyed and hom e for about four years, and then I conver ted m y garage into one-of-a-kind, wh ich m akes them par ticularly per fect for a kitchen and dye workshop, so at least now I’m back working one-skein projects such as shawls or socks. “I don’t do a lot of from hom e I’m not taking over the fam ily kitchen again!” she repeatable colour ways, a lot of m y yar n s are dyed in ver y sm all says. However, Vicki believes th is could be an oppor tun it y batches,” Vicki says. “The yar n I use the m ost is a standard 75% to ach ieve som e long-held dream s for the business, and Mer ino wool and 25% nylon blend, it’s really versatile. It takes she’s looking for a new proper t y where she can create a dye the dye really well and I always know exactly how the colour workshop in a cabin in the garden, and is also mulling over the is going to come out. If you use different bases they take dyes idea of opening her own br icks-and-mor tar shop. differently, but the Merino/nylon base has no surprises.” “I’ve been th in king about it for a wh ile now and as soon as I Mini skeins are a lovely and affordable way to try got notice on the studio I went to see a load of shop un its, but it incor porating some hand-dyed yarns into your crochet. “I do a all felt a bit r ushed and I didn’t want to m ake a rash decision,” lot of m ini skeins, although they are a lot more work,” says Vicki. she explain s. “However, it’s som eth ing I’m still con sider ing. “But they are really popular, especially for projects such as It would stock m y own yar n s and other brands too.” blan kets, str ipey sweaters, colour ful baby cardigans and socks.” Meanwhile, at the home she shares with her par tner, t wo Vicki r uns a ver y popular Mini Skein Club, and sends out ch ildren and t wo kit ten s, Vicki loves to spend her spare tim e subscr iptions ever y month. “I don’t currently provide patterns knitting for fun or crafting with her daughter Effie. “My eldest for the m ini skeins though – I do keep saying I’m going to wr ite is 13 now, and he can knit but he’s not interested, but Effie is a book of m ini skein patterns but never seem to get around to it!” seven and she’s super keen on all crafts,” Vicki explain s. “She can kn it, although she hasn’t quite m astered crochet yet, and Vicki adm its that yar n dyeing can be tim e-con sum ing and she does cross stitch with me too. The great thing is that kids she’s producing fewer crochet design s these days. “I’m ver y can lear n anyth ing now and they don’t necessar ily need a good at working to a dead line but without one I’m not so good parent or grandma to teach them these skills because they at get ting th ings done,” she laugh s. “So if I’m just design ing have YouTube and TikTok.
