Feature Fashion Trends by Susan Cordes © Black Sheep Wool N Wares A re you a knitting fashionista? Do you wait Gorgeous Scarf for the details of the new 4 Australian Knitting seasons trends? Realistically, most of us do want to know the colours, shapes and textures of the trends of the season – just to keep in the loop! Here is a ‘dip’ into the fashion trends for winter 2013. Styles Styles this season vary from the images of romance and gentleness, from art Nouveau to ‘out of the woods’ and on to the powerful and strong influences of wilderness travel. Women’s wear for winter includes knitted dresses, sweaters, cardigans, hand-knitted warm coats, hats, scarves, bags and even knitted shoes. Vintage knitted looks are around, so you can scout around for 1940’s and 1950’s patterns in charity shops for inspiration. You can use vintage yarn if you have the patience; however unravelling an old jumper isn’t everyone’s idea of pleasure! The trick is to make your design look like vintage – whether it is a beret, turban, hat or other headgear. Recently the catwalk has favoured large sweaters, big cardigans and crocheted scarves, knitted jackets with high necks and bright buttons. Large and bulky sweaters work best when worn with tight jeans or leggings. The return of the collar to knitted garments and sleeves - as opposed to sleeveless versions of winter warmers. However, there is a quirky fashion of the fur and knitted vest. These vests are showing

Check them out at:- 155 Hardy Street, Nelson, New Zealand or email them for more information [email protected] No – I haven’t forgotten the men in our lives! How could we! Fashion trends in knitwear for men this season are based on multi-layering with a sweater over a simple shirt teamed with a huge scarf. The French influence is about with the long knitted scarf; materials for both scarves and sweaters are shown off in jersey, cashmere, mohair, Angora and Pure Wool. Colours for the men this season tend to fall into six categories according to the Design Options organisation: • ‘Out of the woods’ – mustards, dark olive, greys, mauves and silvers • ‘Art Nouveau’ – aquamarine, greys and generally monochrome colours • ‘Knit Picks’ – midnight blues, crimsons, yellow gold, chocolate browns • ‘True Brit’ – dark violet, gold, brown and silver green • ‘In the Shadows’ – navy blue, dark teal, slate grey, green • ‘Perfectly Suited’ – light slate grey, midnight blue, forrest green, yellow gold Finally, fashion trends are a bit like watching time travel (Star Trek? Stargate?): Many fashions take ideas from the past yet aim for the future. Some fashion trends seem to last for many seasons or even years, whilst others come and go in the blink of an eye and disappear at warp factor 10. The main thing to remember is how long will it take to knit and will it be fashionable by the time you finish it. Always try to think ahead especially if, like me, you are a slow knitter!
