As manufacturers switched to stick-on ‘plastic wood’ to cut costs, true woodie wagons were consigned to history. This 1950 two-door Ford was part of their last hurrah. Although the Blue Oval easily outnumbered its rivals in terms of production volume, finding an original and unmolested woodie is nigh-on impossible. Most have either been restored, modified or lived lives beside the sea – with all the associated salt-based corrosion issues that entails. None of which applies to this example, because it still wears its original coat of paint and sports an untouched interior.The wood has been carefully refinished, but – as vendor Automotive Restorations Inc is keen to point out – this is one of the most original examples in existence. This is largely down to the careful custodianship of Mary-Jane and Bill Dexter from Vermont, where it lived a peaceful life from 1959 until 2001 – with documented maintenance records for its flathead V8 engine to proveit. The following owner was woodie expert Nick Alexander, who is renowned for his passion for choosing only the finest examples to join his huge collection of 1932-’57 machines in Los Angeles. A full service history with Porsche dealers and marque specialists helps, as itwould with any car.The way the Boxster drives, though, is quite some distance ahead of most. This later, facelifted car has the 2.7-litre engine with light revisions to the intake and exhaust systems that resulted in 224bhp. With the front end of a 911, including aluminium lower wishbones, the 1275kg Boxster flows down the road with the solidity and directness so associated with the marque. The cohesive, slick controls are ajoy to use and seem to blend together in one forward motion of devouring corners and straights until there are none left. Rivals S2000 oreven Elise from Honda and Lotus might contest for B-road hero honours, albeit without the expensive sound of a flat-six behind your ears, but the Boxster also offers an element of luxury. This car’s Bose sound system, factory wind-deflector and automatic climate control all add to the facelift model’s useful heated rear window and other detail refinements. It’s also nice to see the rare shade of Midnight Blue with a matching interior. There’s a lot of great Porsche here, not just in the six-cylinder soundtrack or the polished dynamics, but also in this particularcar’s complete history and high specification.
