This is always a weekend that sees the Hollywood A-list join Brit-flick royalty on home turf in celebration of the year’s cinema, and even February’s quintessential howling gales couldn’t deter guests from coming together to toast the past 12 months’ on-screen achievements – all the more admirable, given that many of the greatest releases were filmed under challenging pandemic restrictions. The merry sound of the mariachi band heralded the glamorous crowd’s arrival. Enthusiastic mingling between generations was a hallmark of the evening, with Emma Watson and Harriet Walter greeting each other gleefully, Mariella Frostrup introducing her daughter Molly to a circle of director friends and a reverential hush following Patrick Stewart as he made his way down a staircase replete with bright young things. ‘Film has the power to evoke emotion, inspire thought and drive universal change in this world,’ observed Charles Finch – and as this coterie of stellar talent raised their glasses, it was hard not to feel hopeful about what storytelling can achieve.
