Week 1 Title: New terminal design 'must prove merit' Author: Bangkok Post Source: https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/tourism-and-transport/1548634/new-terminal-design-must-prove-merit Summary According to the news, The Council of Engineers (CoE) has urged Airports ofThailand Plc (AoT) to prove the merit of a favored design for a new passengerterminal at Suvarnabhumi airport. The master plan is the original blueprint ofSuvarnabhumi airport, created 25 years ago, which has two separate passengerterminals while the new one has a northeast terminal built adjacent to thecurrent terminal. The new passenger terminal will be annexed to the currentterminal. Suvarnabhumi airport is already overcrowded with 60 millionpassengers visiting annually despite it only having enough capacity to serve 45million. The new northeast terminal will boost capacity by 30 million. Mr.Kamol, president of CoE, said it is hard to see how the approved new terminal will beable to accommodate that many people. He said the design lacks space foraircraft parking spots. The Architect Council of Thailand (ACT) also announcedthis week that it will submit a petition to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-chadetailing the irregularities it has found regarding the new terminal, and alsoquestioned the transparency of the design competition because the consortiumthat won it is now facing claims of plagiarism. My reaction/reflection: As I have been to Suvarnabhumi airport before, I would say that thecurrent design isn’t very well. It has a huge luggage area for arrivals and thenspits passengers out into a narrow corridor where they are supposed to figureout that they have to walk to the other side of the building to find a meetingarea. I have seen countless people wandering aimlessly trying to figure out howto get out on arrival. Page 2 of 4
