HistoryWhen young Harris Woods brought a newly acquired golf club home to Fairlight in 1901,he and his brother Cam started hitting golf balls in the fields surrounding Fairlight House...Their developing enthusiasm for the game led them to map the west of Farrell’s paddock, and in May 1908 the first 18 holeout three golf holes, and then to suggest their friends George J layout on the present site was opened.Wilkinson and Arthur Hilliard join them. Hole 1 Course GuideHole 3 Hole 1. Par 4. 329 metres.Hole 4 Probably the ‘friendliest’ of par 4’s at Manly Golf Club to open your account and settle any nerves. A solid drive from this elevated tee to the centre or right hand side of the fairway, short of the fairway bunker is your best option, leaving a short iron or pitching wedge to a large double-green, shared with the 17th hole. Hole 2. Par 5. 505 metres. A long Par 5 where a lay-up drive or long iron from the tee is the smart play to be just short of the water hazard that crosses the fairway. Left of the centre is the line to avoid fairway bunkers on the right side. Your second shot is then a long iron or fairway wood down the middle, but try to avoid Peter Thomson’s signature ‘pot bunker’ that is strategically placed in the middle of the fairway just short of the green. Your approach shot to this ‘table top’ green should be left and under the hole as anywhere long will find trouble. Hole 3. Par 5. 461 metres. This signature Par 5 is played as a ‘3 shot’ hole demanding strategic play as it’s the first of 3 double water carry holes. Your tee shot is a lay-up down the left centre of the fairway to avoid the bunkers and the first water hazard. Your second shot is a mid-iron to the right side of the fairway leaving you with the best angle in to this small tricky green. Hole 4. Par 3. 157 metres. The first of four Par 3’s that features an elevated undulating green. Going long or short left is to be avoided as the green is heavily bunkered front and back. Regardless of pin placement, the smart play is to the front centre of the green. www.manlygolf.com.au 7
