President’s Message We must bow our heads in prayer to all the doctors, nurses, front-line staff, policemen and all those people in essential services who kept manufacturing and supply lines moving even as we cowered inside our homes for the last several months. My heart grieves also for the deaths, tragedy and misery which beset thousands of people working in different states who set out on foot for their homes. The virus from Wuhan It will not be untrue to say that we are all passing through a very momentous period in the history of our planet, let alone India. Even as I write this, a total of 1,15,37,399 Dr. M R Khambete human beings across the world have been stricken by the Corona Virus whose name we first heard in whispers in January 2020 emanating from Wuhan, China till it turned into a shout on 24th March 2020, when India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered the first of several nation-wide lockdowns. Currently there are 44,75,012 active cases across the world, 6,526,387 have recovered or been discharged and 5,36,324 deaths have occurred world-wide. No one would have believed that a superpower like America could be brought down to its knees but with a total of 29,76,662 and 1,32,539 deaths it is now heading a table of disease and death. If we thought we would escape with minimal damage because of our early action to lockdown, the picture is mixed with a total of 6,97,836 cases and 19700 deaths so far.   In an article on March 28, 2020 India Today Tech, using Gabriel Goh's online tool stated “With default data, which considers the infection rate R0 of 2.2 (it means a corona virus patient is likely to infect at least two more people) in a year the disease will infect a little over 1 million people in India. Of these, it will kill a little over 20,000 people.” While we have already hit the predicted number of deaths in 4 months, it remains to be seen what the future brings. The spectre of War Already beset with a troubled economy that was sputtering and muddling along, then struck by Covid 19 from Wuhan, a barely recovered China has seen fit to choose this time , to enter into a major border conflict with India. In an act of infinite treachery and murder, 20 of our soldiers including Colonel Bikumalla Santosh Babu were killed by marauding Chinese troops with wooden clubs wrapped in barbed wire, stones or pushed over mountain ledges to their death in the freezing cold waters of the Galvan River. What China has done is unforgivable. A wave of national anger has erupted against China, with calls from the citizenry for everything, from a military retaliation to repulse the Chinese who still remain massed on our borders, to an economic boycott of Chinese goods. It is against this background of gloom, death and aggressive Chinese actions world-wide, that MSMEs are trying to limp back to some form of normalcy and restore production and services. Even in such circumstances I tend to believe that it is a clarion call to all of us to summon all reserves of strength, not just to survive, but to purposefully produce, innovate and grow – to become an Atmanirbhar Bharat. This article is organised in 2 sections: The New Zealand Way; and the possible application to India. The New Zealand Way 1. Vision One of the first things New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern did, was to outline her vision. This was not the only thing she did, but it was certainly one of the first things she did. John F Kennedy's vision was to put a Man on the Moon. PM Jacinda Ardern's vision was to “squash the virus”.Not flatten the curve, no, that would be too easy, but to squash it. Then, every time she spoke, she made a reference back to it. It was easy for everyone to understand the vision, what it looked like, and for lack of a better phrase, what success looked like, and easy for everyone to understand how they contributed to it. This, we found remarkable. TISA AUG 2020 32

The Last Word Crises Year 2020 – Corona Virus It is doubtful, if over the last six decades, post-partition India has witnessed a problem of such magnitude. We have not lacked for crises. There was the 1962 war with China, followed by the 1965 war with Pakistan, the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, the Emergency in 1975 and Kargil in 1999. · Yet it is difficult to remember any year in which so Seshan Ranganathan much has happened and is continuing to happen. Events that are not only shaking us but which have the capacity to change the world and the way we live. · We are right now living in the middle of the largest pandemic the world has known. In the speed of its spread, its lethality for people with co-morbidities and its ability to overwhelm the medical facilities of the most advanced nations the world has seen nothing like it. · The drug Remdesivir manufactured by Hetero has just been approved for restricted emergency use in India. · In the meantime the Indian Council of Medical Research has directed clinical trial sites of Covaxin – India's first coronavirus vaccine candidate – to fast-track approvals. The Ministry of Science &Technology on 5th July, clarified that none of the coronavirus vaccine candidates, including India's Covaxin and ZyCov-D, are likely to be ready for public use before 2021. The remaking of an old enemy China Even as we struggle with the Corona Virus, China has become aggressive with incursions at Galvan Valley and Pangong Tso. The Indian and Chinese Armies stand in mirror deployment. Even though re-assuring sounds are being made by China and from the Indian side, one thing is for sure, the Chinese have made 1380 million enemies over the ghastly killing of 20 of our soldiers and damaged relations with India carefully re-built since the 1962 war. It is now clear to most Indians that to fight the Chinese Dragon one needs more than mere words. One needs economic muscle. What we need to do · We need to unite all Indians to a common purpose · The common purpose is massive economic development in the coming decade. · To unleash the entrepreneurial and innovative capacities of our people we need to double or triple our investment in education, health and infrastructure. · We need to create a level playing field for Indian Entrepreneurs by bringing down interest rates, logistic and transaction costs. · Considering that we start from negative GDP growth this year, a dramatic boost such as elimination of Income Tax as suggested by Subramaniam Swamy may be considered. What should be crystal clear is that a country of India's massive size cannot exist at the sufferance of aggressive powers like China. The Indian elephant needs to add strength to take on the Dragon.
