THE MOSES EFFECTLongfellow. The Sikorski helicopter transferred Masterson to thestern of the Stella which had a flat area of the deck, where, when the Stella was named Ocean Dream, thepassengers on a warm evening would have theirSundowner cocktails and while away the eveningdancing to a small musical ensemble, all very gosh, ifyou enjoy that kind of thing.Turner and Overman re-boarded the helicopter and NatOverman informed the helicopter pilot “Alex. All clearwe can return to pick up he remaining injured.” theSikorski began to rise into the air and returned tocomplete their rescue. While Welwyn was preparing to go back down to theSussex once again to join the other two medics, theywere busying themselves preparing to have Donaldsonand myself transported to the surface.“Jeff. Have you noticed what were standing on?” askedNat.“Not really,\" came the reply.“Have a closer look! And tell me what you see Jeff!”Nat directed.Jeff shuffled his right foot and his foot removedsediment as he did so. “It’s just sand, mud and… What’sthat!!” His eyes wide and unblinking as he gazed at whathad been revealed by his actions. 201

JAMES YOUNG“It’s what you think it is Jeff… GOLD COINS!” hecontinued “Being down in the Medical Bay we don’tknow the half of what’s going on. I want my share ofthis!”Jeff spoke to calm not only Nat’s excitement, but alsohis own. “Easy Nat. Let’s think about this and not getcarried away. Just stop and think!”Protesting Nat retorted “What’s there to think about? They’ll not miss just a few coins.”At that point the cradle arrived with Surgeon LieutenantWelwyn on board.Jeff facing Nat motioned with his hands down by hisside and his hands placed slightly outward facingdownward and almost imperceptibly made a small upand down motion with his hands indicating keep it calm.“Everything ready to get these men topside?” askedWelwyn.“Aye, Sir.” came a slightly deflated reply from both Natand Jeff.Detecting a somewhat less than enthusiastic response.Looking from one to the other he continued with aquizzical expression and asked “Everything OK?”“Aye Sir.” this time with a more exuberant responsefrom Jeff. “May I recommend you take this one sir,”pointing to Donaldson. “He appears to be a little lessstable than the other one, meaning me.” 202

THE MOSES EFFECT“OK. Let’s load him on. Nat this time you canaccompany our patient to the surface.”“I’ll… I’ll be happy to… err… to err... Remain.” Natstuttered.“That is not necessary Nat. Jeff and I’ll finish off downhere. You don’t need to return. Cunningham and I willbe able to prepare the patient for transportation. But besure to get the empty cradle back to us as quickly aspossible.”“If you say so, sir.” he answered with a frown. As they departed Welwyn asked “What’s really theproblem Cunningham?”“Look at what you're standing on sir.” was Jeff’s reply.Welwyn looked at his feet and saw the Gold. “Nat an’me were just wondering what to do when you arrivedback.”“We do nothing!!” an implacable faced Welwyn replied.“We’re here to do a specific job, and as obedientsubjects of His Majesty the King, serving in his navy, wecarry out our given orders implicitly. Do you understandCunningham.”“Yes Sir. But they won’t miss just a coin or two, willthey?” With a pleading look and with arms outstretchedand nodding to the bullion beneath their feet, JeffreyCunningham was imploring his superior to just give alittle sign of conciliation. 203

JAMES YOUNG“I’ll not repeat myself again Cunningham. Leave it!!”Welwyn’s voice did not quaver or falter as he issued thatinstruction. “Now let’s do our job and get this man readyfor transportation to Sick Bay.”“Aye Aye, Sir” was Jeff’s dejected response. They continued their preparation to transport me to theStella. Although there was a long, lingering occasionalgaze by Cunningham at the treasure they were kneelingupon, they continued their preparation. In what seemed an age, but only a few minutes, thecradle was returned. Welwyn and Cunninghammanoeuvred me onto it, loaded their equipment andtransmitted, “Rescue one. Permission to return to base,Over.”“Permission granted, Over and out.”We began our return to the surface. Again with all threeon board. Welwyn and Cunningham, both clinging ontothe handrail as tightly as the could, as we raced to thesurface. Cunningham did manage to have one last lookbelow as we ascended watching the vision of goldreceding into the distance.A flurry of activity greeted us when we finally steppedonto the platform between Pegasus and Aurora. As youknow the Camouflage Netting was gone the handrailswere being dismantled. Everything was in place todismantle the platform as soon as we were airlifted to theStella. 204

THE MOSES EFFECTThe helicopter was hovering above the platform andbegan to descend to just three feet four inchesapproximately above the platform and hovered there. The three medical personnel were able to manhandle thestretcher and me into the helicopter and we were alltransported to the Stella were I was taken straight to theMedical Bay.When the helicopter departed for the Stella, the platformbegan to be dismantled and the anchors raised and thesmall flotilla of four ships separated as ordered byCommodore Jorgensen to their predetermined locations. 205

JAMES YOUNG CHAPTER SIXTEENAfter knocking and hearing “Come in!” Entering theoffice of Captain Pablo Morales, “Excuse me, CaptainMorales” up spoke a non-commissioned officer of theSpanish National Directorate of Strategic MilitaryIntelligence, DNIEM’s. As he walked toward hissuperior officer he saluted and handed him a piece ofpaper on which was transcribed a message.Captain Pablo Morales always wore his second bestdress uniform or equivalent, he felt that his men neededhim to set an example. If he didn’t set the tone, it mayappear that the duties performed by him and his menwere unimportant or even valueless, and that wasn’t so.“I have just intercepted this transmission and alsoobserved some unusual activity off the coast ofGibraltar. If you would please accompany me back tomy station I will be able to explain a little more clearlysir” requested Sergeant Hugo Castillo.“Very well, Sergeant… Lead the way.” Sergeant Castillosported a typical Spanish droopy moustache. All hedeeded was a Poncho, Sombrero and a Bandoleer acrosshis shoulders and he’d look like a Mexican Bandit.Castillo was wearing an open-necked pale blue armyissue shirt, black belt, dark blue trousers and black boots,as were all his colleagues as this was regular Spanisharmy dress. The young Sergeant led his captain along the office to asection where six operatives were sat at various stations, 206

THE MOSES EFFECTfive of which were occupied and his own stationobviously was vacant. At each of the six desk locations was a computermonitor screen. Additionally, each operative had a pairof earphones with attached microphone. Sergeant HugoCastillo picked up his pair of earphones and microphonewhich he had placed on the desk in front of his chair andhanded them to Captain Morales.Sergeant Castillo leaned across his desk and pointed tothe monitor screen. “You see, sir, these vessels in thecentre of the screen are supposed to be searching for...”“I know what they’re supposed to be doing Sergeant!”“Sorry sir, but as you see, they are all together in onespot. Two vessels abreast. One at the rear and the fourthtraversing continually around the other three vessels. Inaddition, as you’ll see from the intercepted transcribedmessage. If I may sir? Notice this point, sir, we havereached our search area and we are slowing down.”“There are no other vessels there, sir. As you can see onthe screen.”As they watch eight small dots appeared emanating fromthe fourth vessel and additionally what seems to be ahelicopter. “What are those Sergeant?” Asked Moralespointing to the screen. “I’m not sure, sir. They weren’tthere a moment ago. What could they be Sir.”Morales cast a quizzical glance at Sergeant Castillo“Could they be Search and Rescue vessels? As that is 207

JAMES YOUNGwhat they’re supposed to be there for Sergeant.”“If you say so, sir. Sorry to have troubled you” cameCastillo’s sheepish reply.“That’s fine Sergeant. Better to be safe than sorry.”“Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.”Captain Morales about to walk away reconsidering, looked back and said “Sergeant. Just to be on the safeside, contact Armilla helicopter base and ask them totake a look see in case your suspicions are correct.“Yes Sir!” came the young Sergeant’s reply with a newfound enthusiasm.Morales remembered what it was like as aninexperienced young officer when for the first time hiscommanding officer recognized his efforts andcommended him. He smiled and went back to his office.‘Scramble! Scramble!’ Do the Spanish say that too? Thestaccato sound of the that announcement echoed throughthe crews Day Room of the Armilla helicopter base. The crew of an Apache AH-64 Advanced two seater USmanufactured attack helicopter jumped into action andleft their barracks and headed for their aircraft. The Apache AH-64 is manufactured by the Americanaircraft manufacturer Boeing. The AH-64’s armaments consist of eight Hellfiremissiles, two pods of nineteen 70mm Rockets, one pod 208

THE MOSES EFFECTon the left and one on the right of the helicopter and30mm canon capable of firing three hundred rounds aminute, mounted under the nose of the aircraft. The American forces claim it’s the last thing the enemyever sees. The Pilot’s role was to Pilot the helicopter and to giveinstructions from what he observed, that’s original. The pilot, Fight Lieutenant Alejandro Dominguez spokeover the radio to his observer Alvero Lazando as theyapproached their target coordinates.“What do you see Alvero? Anything showing on themonitor?”“Yes, sir, but I’ve also got a visual to our starboardquarter. I see a large helicopter. I believe it’s a SikorskyS-92 search and rescue helicopter sir.”“What’s it doing?”“It’s winching up personnel from what looks like abattered old boat barely afloat. There appears to beanother twenty or thirty others still on-board the boat.”“Anything else?”“The radar Monitor shows a number of small boatsheading toward the stricken boat. They appear to becoming from the vessels we were sent to investigate.”“I’ll contact the helicopter.” 209

JAMES YOUNGOn board the Sikorsky S-92 the navigating officer spokeon the helicopter internal radio to the Pilot. “Alex we’vegot company.”Pilot Officer Alexander Longfellow replied “I see himChris. Let’s hope our ruse works. It looks like he meansbusiness”Flight Lieutenant Dominguez flew the AH-64 helicopterto three hundred meters in front of the Sikorsky andpositioned his hovering aircraft facing the cockpit of theS-92.Switching on this transmitter and spoke, “This isFoxtrot, Tango Lima Seven Zero of the Ejercito delAire, literally the Army of the Air, the Spanish Air Force(SPAF). You are in Spanish air space. Identify yourself.”“Foxtrot, Tango Lima Seven this is Alpha Zero Oneoperating from His Britannic Majesties ship HMSAurora. Over.” He was lying. They were operating fromCosmos but by using the Aurora and the HMS prefixthey hoped it would have a more authoritative influenceon the Spaniard’s thinking.“I am Flight Lieutenant Alejandro Dominguez of theSpanish Air Force, to whom do I have the Honour orspeaking?Christopher Russell spoke to Alex. “All very polite”“I suppose he could be Chris with that deadly hornetpointing at us.” 210

THE MOSES EFFECTPilot Officer Longfellow replied. “I am Pilot OfficerAlexander Longfellow. Pleased to speak to you,Lieutenant. As you will have observed, we are engagedin the European concerted effort to rescue AsylumSeekers and Refugees stranded at sea as they seek toescape to Europe from war-torn nations and persecution.Over.”“Very noble.” Came his almost dismissive reply.“Please you feel that way Lieutenant. If you are satisfiedmay we continue on our mission. As you see the vesselbelow is in a vary precarious situation. Over”A few seconds passed, which seemed like an eternityand Alex wondered, was he going to blast us out of thesky or what? I don’t like the way that canon is movingaround.Christopher Russell informed his pilot. “The canonfollows the direction that the observer in the AH-64 islooking due to an infrared transmitter in his helmet andthe receiver in the observers head restraint, then thecannon follows the direction received from thosesignals.”“I wish he’d stop looking at us and look away. He’smaking me very nervous.”“I suppose that’s the idea Alex.”“Very true. But this wait is interminable.” Longfellowswitched the transmitter radio to transmit and spoke. 211

JAMES YOUNG“Alpha Zero one to Foxtrot, Tango Lima seven, Over.”The reply came “Go ahead officer Longfellow, Over.”“We are engaged in a legitimate rescue operation andwill continue in our lawful activity despite yourintimidation as lives are at risk, Over.”The delay was caused by Dominguez as he instructed hisobserver. “Alvero, find out from Base whether or notthere is such an approved operation.”“Straight away, sir” came the reply. After a few seconds Alvero Lazando confirmed toLieutenant Alejandro Dominguez the legitimacy of therescue operation.Dominguez replied to Pilot Officer Longfellow.“Foxtrot, Tango Lima Seven to Alpha Zero One. Wehave confirmed the authenticity of your activity. May wewish you every success in your endeavours and regretany aggression you may have felt.”“Thank you for your good wishes. We realise you weredoing your duty. I hope we meet in person one day. Overand out.Speaking to his observer Flight Lieutenant AlejandroDominguez said “Well Alvero, we’ve done our duty.Contact base and tell them we’re returning and informthem to communicate with the DNIEM and tell them allis well.”Dominguez had an after thought and asked his Observer, 212

THE MOSES EFFECT“What do you make of the large vessels on our StarboardAlvero?”“Looks like an Oil Tanker. Everything looks normalSir.”Dominguez said wearily “Good, let’s make our wayback to base.”Alex sighed to his navigator “That was a near thingChris. Inform Aurora and Pegasus of our near miss andthen we can get on with our real mission.”“Yes, sir” was the enthusiastic reply of ChristopherRussell.“Alpha Zero One.” Now all security transmission beingput aside, “This is Aurora with orders from CaptainPhillips of His Majesties ship HMS Aurora. Cancel yourmission and return to Aurora immediately and awaitinstructions.” Came the voice over the aircraft’s radio.“This is Alpha Zero One. Identify yourself.” PilotOfficer Longfellow demanded.“Come on Alex, surely you recognize my voice it’sDavid. Aurora’s Radio Officer David Chester. Don’t getme into more trouble, I’ve already upset Captain Phillipsand he’s on the ‘Warpath. Over”“What has upset the Captain? Over”“Don’t ask Alex. Just get here… like Yesterday!Commodore Jorgensen’s instructions, Over and out.” theradio transmission terminated. 213

JAMES YOUNG“Chris has our Winchman secured our passengers?”asked Alex.“Yes.” Came the reply.“Right, let’s see what all the panic is all about. Contactthe boat crews and tell them to return to Cosmos”instructed Pilot Officer Longfellow. “Better still, just incase there’s prying eyes ask them to continue pretendingthey are still engaged in the rescue effort.”“Understood.” Replied Christopher Russell thenavigator.“And another thing contact Cosmos and inform her ofthe result of our encounter with the Spanish Authoritiesand the request, Ah sorry I mean order by Aurora toattend her. Along with the reason why we’re departing toAurora and leaving our station. I’m sure CaptainMendoza will be delighted”“Any other little request you can think of Alex? I’m surethe list can be added too. The list’s only as long as myarm at the moment!! I’m only the Navigator and I’ll getmy head in my hands and my brains to play with whenCaptain Mendoza hears this,” replied an irritated ChrisRussell.“Stop wittering like an old woman and just do it. We’reonly the dogs' bodies in this caper,” came Longfellow’sinstruction, he added, “Remember who’s supposed to bethe superior officer here!”“Yes Sir… and wait for the fallout” was Russell’s curt 214

THE MOSES EFFECTreply.“Cosmos to Alpha Zero, One, Over” came the expectedcommunication.“Alpha Zero One receiving a somewhat distortedtransmission, Over.” Any ploy to lessen and hopefullystop the barrage would be better than nothingLongfellow thought.“You’ll not need the radio when I connect you to anApoplectic Captain Mendoza you’ll be able to hear himon Mars, you’d better batten down the hatches, Over”Longfellow closed his eyes, gritted his teeth and awaitedthe onslaught. The rotund Captain Mendoza began his transmission, sorry bellowing to Alpha Zero One, “Who put you incommand of these proceedings, ex-Flying OfficerLongfellow?”Longfellow lowered his head and shook it and thought,‘We’re just doing as ordered, why are we getting thisrollicking?’ as the tirade continued.Trying to lessen the verbal bombardment Longfellowinterrupted. “Sorry sir, your transmission is breaking up”was his attempt to terminate the transmission.“Just get back here to Cosmos. Do you hear that clearenough!” Captain Mendoza yelled.“Excuse me, Sir. What about Commodore Jorgensen’sorder?” asked Pilot Officer Longfellow. The reply was 215

JAMES YOUNGradio static.“We’re in for it now Alex. It sounds as though CaptainMendoza has just blown a fuse!” came the comment ofChristopher Russell the helicopter Navigator over thehelicopter intercom.Unexpectedly the radio burst into life and a message wasreceived from the familiar voice of the Cosmos RadioOperator.“Cosmos to Alpha Zero one, Over.“Alpha Zero One to Cosmos, Over.“Proceed as previously ordered to Aurora, Over.“What about our previous order from Captain Mendoza?Over.“Commodore Jorgensen has spoken to Captain Mendozaand you are to proceed to Aurora as instructed. Over andout.”“I’d like to have been a fly on the wall and heard thatconversation Alex” chirped Christopher Russell over theintercom.“Just let it go Chris. We’ll get the ‘flack’ from it later.” 216

THE MOSES EFFECT CHAPTER SEVENTEEN“Captain Morales sir.” Captain Morales closed his eyes, hoping not to see Sergeant Hugo Castillo. Knowing thathis thought would not be true opening his eyes said“What is it Sergeant?”“A communication from the Armilla helicopter base.”“Well… What is it Sergeant?” Looking a little down-cast Sergeant Castillo handed the communication toCaptain Morales. After reading the signal he put his hand on Castillo’sshoulder and said “Cheer up, Hugo, there’s not alwayssinister espionage and skulduggery in everything wehave to handle.”“Yes, sir. But I really feel there was something not rightabout that situation”“Our people have checked. Let’s just leave it at that.Better luck next time, eh?”“Yes, sir.” As he was returning to his station, watched ashe went by a thoughtful Captain Morales.Captain Morales called “One more thing before youleave. What about the original question you askedregarding the two vessels.”“It was reported that everything was in order Sir.”replied a despondent Sergeant Castillo.“Thank you Sergeant. Back to your post, eh? Just keep 217

JAMES YOUNGan eye on developments”“Very good Sir.” Hugo returned to his station with alittle more determination in his step than when he hadfirst approach Captain Morales and fully intending toprove his suspicions were correct.“Sergeant.”Looking to see who it was requiring his attention,Sergeant Hugo Castillo raised his eyes from the screenhe’d been studying with wrapped attention to seeRodrigo Mananas approaching him from one of the otherstations in the unit.“Yes Rodrigo.”“I have been intercepting these somewhat unusualtransmissions” he said as he passed a document toSergeant Castillo. “I cannot make any sense of it. Themessages all seem to be coming FROM Aurora and TOAurora. A vessel I think. The messages such as these;“Approaching our rescue area.”“Reconnoitre.”“Return to Base.”“Rescue”“We also have a number of encrypted signals we’reworking on.” He added, “There’s a lot of activity off thecoast near Gibraltar that seem very strange Sergeant. What do you think is going on?” 218

THE MOSES EFFECTCastillo looking at and pointing to his own RADARscreen replied. “I’ve been watching events there withinterest too. In fact, I’ve pointed this out to CaptainMorales and he requested the Armilla helicopter base tosend a helicopter to investigate.”“What was the result, Sergeant?” asked Mananas.“There was nothing to report. According to thehelicopter crew everything was in order.” He continued“There’s something not right Rodrigo. I can feel it in mybones”“I agree Sergeant.” replied Mananas. “What shall wedo?”“I’ll go and speak once more to Captain Morales, onlythis time you can also report what you’ve observed.”They both approach the office of Captain Morales, knocked and awaited the invitation to Come in!They entered and stood before the Captain's deskawaited him to raise his eyes to them and then saluted.“What is it?” was his enquiry.Sergeant Castillo coughed and said “Sorry to disturb youCaptain, but Private Mananas has something he feels hewishes to bring to your attention.” Mananas looked inrepulsion at Sergeant Castillo, as if he’d been stabbed. He’d been expecting Castillo to explain their reason forapproaching him, now he was looking at the Captain andfeeling like a trapped wild animal. 219

JAMES YOUNG“Yes Private? Spit it out. Don’t just stand there.” orderedthe Captain.“Well… Sir. I’d been looking at my radar screen andintercepting some unusual Radio transmissions andadditional encrypted transmissions.”“Go on.” Captain Morales said guardedly.“The activity seems to be off the coast of Gibraltar.”“Gibraltar! Is this your doing Sergeant!! Have you puthim up to this!! Because if you have, I’ll have youbehind bars before you can say Mother, yelled a redfaced Captain Morales“No! No! Sir! But please look at the copy of thecontinuing Radio traffic and come and observe theRADAR screen.” Pleaded Sergeant Castillo.“Very well. I will and if this is another red herring I’llhave you both…” exasperated Morales couldn’tcontinue. He raised his right hand, waving it indicatingfor them to leave and he followed. All three arrived at Private Mananas station, looked atthe radar screen, then at each other… the screen wasclear of any activity off Gibraltar. Actually notcompletely, there was one Blip appearing at the right-hand side of the screen just about to disappear fromview. The Sergeant and Private looked at each other openmouthed, then to Captain Morales expecting a volcanic 220

THE MOSES EFFECTeruption.Captain Morales put his hand over his mouth lookeddown and resting his head on his hand walked away.“Rodrigo. I don’t know which is the worst. Silence orExplosion?” Said a concerned Castillo. They both returned to their own stations. After about half an hour Captain Morales entered theunit and with his right index finger beckoned Castilloand Mananas. He then Returned to his office awaitingtheir arrival. When they entered the Captain's office and saluted.Morales was sat with the copy of the transcript thatPrivate Mananas had provided and the originaldocument the Sergeant Castillo had produced.Morales spoke quietly. “I believe I have one of the bestunits in our division and the thought that two of mytrusted men would provide some fantasy storey wasunbearable.” Castillo and Mananas looked at each otherexpecting to be shot, at the very least.Captain Morales continued “I have been able to rerunthe radar images stored on the CD-Rom and I have readthe transcriptions that you have provided, it is myopinion that there has been some clandestine operationoff the coast of Gibraltar”Castillo and Mananas could hardly believe their ears andlooked in bewilderment at each other. 221

JAMES YOUNGCaptain Morales smiled and held up his hands, I don’tknow whether you would call it praise or recognition, even gratitude. He said “Well done. I’ll contact ourpeople and they can send an Official Note of Complaintto the British Government via our Ambassador inLondon. Whoever that is.”After a few moments of reflection Morales observed “Ifthere is some covert activity taking place, they willreturn. Keep a careful watch on that area and let meknow as soon as you observe any further activity.”“Thank you gentlemen for your excellent work.Dismissed.” Morales then stood and saluted his men.Castillo and Mananas returned the salute. They leftMorales’ office and closed the door.Morales smiled as he heard the laughter and whooping.‘I didn’t think two grown men could make such a noise.’he thought to himself. It wasn’t many days latter that Sergeant Castillo andPrivate Mananas entered the office of Captain Morales.Captain Morales looked up at them and said “Don’t tellme!!”They both replied in unison “Yes Sir. They are back!!”Morales stiffened momentarily in his chair, then gave along, low sigh and appeared to deflate as his shoulderssagged. He informed Castillo and Mananas, “OurAmbassador in London, Don Diego Hurtado deMendoza, has informed our Government that in no way 222

THE MOSES EFFECTmust there be any interference with those vessels. ThePrime Minister, Mariano Royor Brey” Morales paused tounlock and take out of his top right-hand draw a singlepaged document and then waved it before Castillo andMananas. Morales then continued “The Prime Ministerhas signalled all our forces to that effect. That there mustbe no interference!”Unable to control his emotions Sergeant Castillo, red inthe face, exclaimed “They must be Mad!! It’s obviousthey are up to something… and what’s more…”“Hugo!” Morales interrupted. “We’ve got our orders! And whether we agree or not, whether we like it or not,our duty is to obey them! Do you understand?”Standing in a pathetic demoralized posture SergeantCastillo looked to his companion Private RodrigoMananas who said nothing in return, but showedcomplete capitulation by bowing his head. They boththen stood to attention and Sergeant Castillo replied“Yes Sir.”“But they are up to something Sir!” Castillo, once againendeavouring to convince his Captain.“Hugo” Morales spoke, understanding his Sergeant’sfrustration. “Unless we can present something concrete, there’s no way we can countermand these explicitorders. You’ll have to let it go.”Yes Sir”“Before you go, there is something you are not aware 223

JAMES YOUNGof,” Captain Morales began. Again, Morales pointed tothe page he’d earlier referred to and continued “ThisSignal also explains that on-board one of those fourvessels that your so concerned about Sergeant, is ourown operatives. So things are not so calamitous as youmay have thought.”“That’s good news Sir. What do we do now?” SergeantCastillo asked excitedly.“Nothing Sergeant! We’ve received our orders asexplained earlier. We’re out of it!” explained Morales.“But Sir!” Castillo pleaded.“Hugo! We’ve got our orders.”“Yes, sir,” a deflated Castillo replied.Captain Morales continued “However, there’s noinstruction for us not to continue monitoring events. Isthere?”“No Sir! There is not!” Castillo replied and he andMananas shook hands excitedly and asked “Can wecarry on Sir?”Captain Morales just nodded.Rafa Mendoza Captain of the vessel Cosmos was in hisquarters on-board the Cosmos. He was considering hisplan of action while Cosmos was carrying out herprevious instructions and was now once again carryingout a circling patrol around Pegasus, Aurora and Stella. 224

THE MOSES EFFECTMatters were weighing heavily on his mind. Mendozahad intended to discipline the Sikorsky helicopter pilot,Pilot Officer Alexander Longfellow for his flagrantdisregard for his explicit orders from him.Commodore Jorgensen had praised the actions ofLongfellow and his crew over their handling of theincident with the ‘Spanish’ incursion and easing whatcould have become an International Incident. He alsocommended them for the speedy response to theEmergency Rescue of myself, Donaldson andMasterson.Jorgenson’s commendations had somewhat eclipsed thedisciplinary action Captain Mendoza felt was absolutelyimperative. When responding to Mendoza’s order toreport to the Captains Quarters all Captain Mendozacould do was add his congratulations to Longfellow andhis crew. While thanking Captain Mendoza, AlexanderLongfellow was about to leave when Captain Mendozainterposed, and said “Don’t try that. The transmission isbraking-up, play again Pilot Officer, or the only thingyou’ll be flying is a Paper Kite on Brighton Beach”, aseaside resort on the south coast of England. “Do youunderstand?” “Yes Sir. Sorry Sir” was his relieved replyand he took his leave. 225

JAMES YOUNG CHAPTER EIGHTEENAndrew Masterson, Donaldson and myself stood inCommodore Jorgensen’s Day room on-board Pegasus. We were once again dressed in the attire we’dpreviously worn on our preliminary ill-fated decent tothe Sussex. He motioned with his right hand and said “Take a seat ifyou would gentlemen.” We complied and took our seats. After we’d settled in our chairs Jorgensen continued.“I’m pleased to see that you're all looking so well. Haveyou recovered from your ordeal?” “Yes, sir” Mastersonreplied and Donaldson and I both nodded in agreement.“I believe that everything is ready. Are you Gentlemenable to resume your duties?” Jorgensen enquired.“Ready and willing to carry on Sir.” Masterson affirmedwith an enthusiastic reply. Donaldson cocked his headand raised his eyebrows and gave the now familiarknowing grin as he looked at me.“Well Gentlemen, if you're now ready. Let’s get to it.”The three of us stood up. Donaldson whispered to me“That was short and sweet.” Masterson saluted theCommodore. We then filed out of the Day room.Jorgensen followed us to take up his position on the PortFlying Bridge of Pegasus to observe proceedings.Upon leaving the stern superstructure of Pegasus wecrossed the deck to the Port-side to the Platform that wasnow in-place between Pegasus and Aurora. As westepped onto the platform everything was in place, 226

THE MOSES EFFECTCamouflage netting, handrails and even the Cradle. Justas it had been previously. However, there was oneadditional requirement. A Security Detachment of RoyalMarines. The Corps of Royal Marines is a Light Infantry Troopattached to the Royal British Navy and are also part ofthe British Army, someone’s got to shoot at the badguys. On 28 October 1664 the then Duke of York establishedThe Honourable Artillery Company. This regiment in1755 was renamed The Corps of Royal Marines and hasremained such ever since. The Detachment consisted of Second Lieutenant JohnBuckingham, Lance corporal Trevor Price and PrivateHarold Wallace. Each of the detachment was dressed inCombat Fatigues and armed with a Glock 17 Gen 4Semi-Automatic sidearm each gun complete with up toseventeen rounds of 4.9mm bullets. The gun design made it ideal for surreptitiousoperations. The gun was virtually undetectable by MetalDetectors because of the gun’s Polymer Frame. It is nowthe preferred side-arm issue to all British Armed Forcesand a number of other armies around the world. As we approached the Cradle Second Lieutenant JohnBuckingham approached us looking a little bemused. AsDonaldson, Masterson and I were all dressed oncoveralls and no Military, Navy nor any other Servicesinsignia showing, Buckingham didn’t know whom to 227

JAMES YOUNGaddress. It just wasn’t done, not to have any obviousOrder of Rank.Masterson eased the Second Lieutenants dilemma bysaluting the Second Lieutenant. Masterson introducedhimself “Sub-Lieutenant Masterson of His MajestiesShip Pegasus at your service.” Buckingham returned thesalute. “Pleased to meet you Sub-Lieutenant. I amSecond Lieutenant Buckingham of Four Two,Commando Royal Marines”. Why do they say Four,Two instead of Forty Two, I’ll never understand Armyspeak.Buckingham continued. “This is Lance Corporal TrevorPrice and Private Harold Wallace also of 42Commando.” Salutes all round except Donaldson andmyself. Masterson reacted as he saw Buckingham’sexpression as he looked at Donaldson and myself, seeingwe had not saluted. “These gentlemen are Persona NonGrater. If you get my drift.” Raising both eyebrowsawaiting recognition that Buckingham understood theimplication of his comments. “I see,\" was Buckingham’swary reply.Introductions over. Buckingham informed Masterson“Our Orders are to provide any assistance andcooperation you may require and to any lengths. Evenextreme, if required.” “Extreme!” Masterson exclaimed.“Yes, very extreme… if required.” Buckingham pattedhis sidearm and nodded. I thought ‘to much nodding andwinking for my liking. Is this a ‘Nudge, Nudge, Wink,Wink’ convention? 228

THE MOSES EFFECT“Thank you for your support. I hope it will not be tooarduous. Shall we proceed gentlemen?” Donaldson’scomment indicating we’ve delayed long enough.Donaldson moved toward the Cradle. “Just a moment! Not so fast!” came an authoritative voice. I was startledto see Buckingham approaching us in a determinedmanner, holding what I assumed was a Metal Detector.“We need to scan for weapons or explosives.”“What! Do you think we’re going to shoot each other orblow ourselves up?” I blurted. “Let the little man havehis moment” Donaldson said. “It’ll only take a momentand we can get on.” Obviously rankled, Buckinghamglared at Masterson and said “Do you allow thisinsubordination?”“At this time, this group takes their orders from Me!And only me!” Donaldson forcefully conveyed toBuckingham. “Who… Who are you, may I ask?Buckingham stammered.“It doesn’t matter who I am,only you should know that I can have you Broken in aninstant. If you have any further request, address them tome. However, you may proceed.” Donaldson just wentup in my estimation.Buckingham looked at Masterson in disbelief. Mastersonsmiled and guess what, nodded.Buckingham and his men carried out their scans andindicated that they were satisfied with matters.Donaldson took Buckingham aside and explained“We’re here… but not here, if you know what I mean. The whole flotilla is not supposed to be here at all. 229

JAMES YOUNGWe’re supposed to be assisting in the rescue of AsylumSeekers and Refugees. If the real reason for our beinghere becomes apparent, I believe the Spanish will sinkus.”“Why are we here?” asked the Second Lieutenant. “Youdon’t think all this paraphernalia here for any rescue”replied Donaldson, spreading out his arms gesturing tothe surrounding environment on which they werestanding.“Not really. But we’re here on a need to know basis andI am a little bewildered. My orders, as I’ve indicated areto protect and assist in any way possible” answeredBuckingham. “How long have you been with us?”enquired Donaldson. “We were flown out to Aurorafrom Gibraltar the day before Pegasus joined thisconglomeration of… what looks like a Rag Tag andBobtail motley crew, if you don’t mind me saying, Sir”.Buckingham thought he’d better add the ‘Sir’ indeference to Donaldson apparent seniority.“Protect us? How do you propose to protect us withthose Pop Guns you're carrying?” “We have more thanpopguns sir!” retorted Buckingham to Donaldson.Buckingham continued “If we’re not really here asrescuers, why are we here, sir?”“Our apparent Rescue Mission is only a ploy todiscourage any inquisitive onlookers. It is true to say wehave engaged in some rescues, however the real reasonwe’re here is to go down to HMS Sussex which was 230

THE MOSES EFFECTsunk here off the coast of Gibraltar in 1693 and is nowhalf a mile down on the Seabed.” Donaldson explained.“You’ll need more than those small Aqua-Lunges orBreathing Apparatus your carrying if you're going downto that depth, not to mention some sort of Pressures-Suitto counter the great pressure at that depth. If I may sayso Sir.” Buckingham was looking at the attire ofMasterson, Donaldson and me.“Don’t worry, Lieutenant. All will be revealed” saidDonaldson pointing down to the suspended Tesla Coilsthat were being lowered into the sea as they spoke. “All Ican see is the sea!” the Second Lieutenant exclaimed.“Watch and be amazed!” was Donaldson’s reply.“If you could communicate with Pegasus Andrew, andask them to activate the coil please.” “Straight way”came the enthusiast reply. As Andrew Masterson tookhold of his hand held radio and requested the coils to beactivated.“Rescue One to Aurora, Over.” Covert speak nowresumed.“Aurora receiving, Over.”“Rescue One to Aurora a request for more supplies, please, Over.”“Aurora to Rescue One message received, Over andout.”The Tesla Coil was activated. 231

JAMES YOUNGAs Captain Phillips on the starboard Flying Bridge ofAurora watched the events unfolding, his mind wentback to the last occasion and an inadvertent shiver wentup his spine. It wasn’t only the rescue that came to mind, also the resulting inquiry.Cox and Appleton had appeared before CommodoreJorgenson and another two captains, after Cox’s shortrecuperation. The Captains being Captain Phillips ofAurora and Captain Duval of Stella. Captain Mendoza ofCosmos, not being of His Majesty Navy was not part ofthe Enquiry. The Enquiry found, while the accident could have beenavoided with a little forethought, the findings were that itwas a genuine accident. If one can call any accident aGenuine Accident. Their Naval Records would includemention of the incident and would inhibit any prospectsof promotion. The Enquiry further instructed that all Push-Buttoncontrols should be fitted with a protective cover that hadto be lifted before the Push-Button could be activated. The Enquiry was then closed. 232

THE MOSES EFFECT CHAPTER NINETEENCommodore Jorgensen left the port side Flying Bridgeof Pegasus, entered the Bridge and found First OfficerChambers looking at his navigation charts and asked himto signal Cosmos to ask her to deploy the decoy rescueboats to disguise our true objective. “Aye, Sir”Chambers replied and Jorgensen then departed for theRadio Room.Meanwhile Buckingham and his two comrades had tohold tightly onto the handrail as they observed thephenomenon that was unfolding before their eyes.“What… What’s… happening? What’s causing this?” heasked disbelievingly, as he and the other marines beheldthe opening vortex.“Bells and Whistles or Smoke and Mirrors” I replied.“Do you think we were stupid?” Buckingham retorted.“No! It’s just as much of a mystery to us as it is to you. You’ll need one of those science boffins to explain it Iguess. Apparently it’s to do with those coils. Whenswitched on they cause some magnetic effect on water, causing it to part like that.”“Unbelievable. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I’dhave said it was impossible!” A perplexed Buckinghamresponded. “Same for us!” Masterson interposed, I’dforgotten he was here in all the commotion. “I’ll contactthe Winchman and have him be ready to raise theCradle” Masterson said.Donaldson looked at the Cradle we were about to enter 233

JAMES YOUNGonce again and quoted part of Shakespeare’s play HenryV. It was part of the speech allegedly given by Henry Vjust before the battle of Agincourt on 25 February 1415.The quote is “Once more into the Breach dear friends!” Isaid “I hope we’re not going into battle. It was badenough last time.” All three of us gave a littleapprehensive chuckle and mounted the Cradle.“Rescue One to Aurora, Over” Masterson transmitted.“Aurora to Rescue One. Receiving loud and clear, Over”came the response.“Rescue One to Aurora. Permission to begin searching,Over.”“Aurora to Rescue one you may proceed, Over andOut.”All three of us Donaldson, Masterson and myself hadboarded the Cradle while Masterson had been makinghis Radio Transmission. We now gave the Thumbs-Upsignal to the Winchman. The Cradle began to rise whilethe entry of the Cradle into the void was controlled bythe personnel holding the guide ropes as they had doneon our previous ill-fated decent. The descent began. Masterson stood at the left hand sideof the platform with his folded arms resting on the handrail that surrounded the platform looking down into thedeep abyss. Donaldson, or should I say Agent F19, and Iobserved his reflective attitude and I gave a slightinclination of my head toward Masterson. Donaldson 234

THE MOSES EFFECTshrugged his shoulders and said “Like you and me he’sgot plenty to consider.” “That’s true” I confirmed. We reached the Sussex. The Cradle through Masterson’scontinued communication with the surface The Cradlecame to a gentle halt.“Rescue One to Aurora, Over.”“Aurora to Rescue One. Receiving you loud and clear,Over.”“Rescue one to Aurora we require assistance to facilitatethe rescue. Please dispatch suitable equipment to ourposition, Over.”“Aurora to Rescue One. Complying with your request,Over and Out.”Masterson was requesting suitable containers in which toaid in raising the Gold Coins, Silver and other Bullion tothe surface. This request for ‘Suitable Equipment’ wasunderstood to mean just that, and hopefully misleadanyone listening to the transmissions. While awaiting the ‘Suitable Equipment’, the Cradle wasdispatched empty of personnel to the surface and woulddescend once again with the required materials. Whilethat was taking place all three began to survey theirsurroundings.Masterson had thoughtfully brought three soft bristledhand brushes which he handed one to each of us. Wecould now begin to remove the Detritus on which they 235

JAMES YOUNGnow stood and examine what was beneath our feet.As we slowly began to remove the Detritus ourexcitement became more and more palpable. The shineof gold Doubloons and silver Pieces of Eight and halfdecayed wooden chests that had been burst open duringthe storm that inundated the Sussex causing her to sinkrather ignominiously began to be revealed.Moment by moment, brush stroke by brush stroke, emeralds, Gold Plates and Gold and Silver Goblets allappeared as if by magic as each brush stroke revealedmore and more of the Sussex’s hidden hoard.Trying not to damage any of the Goblets and Platesbeneath our feet and any other as yet unrevealedtreasures. We carefully endeavoured to lift and put to one sidesome of the damaged wooden chests so that there couldbe an area within the twenty five foot diameter shaft inwhich we were working would be safe to stand upon, butit seemed the more items we removed, the more therewas. Finally, we there appeared to be what were the woodenplanking of a deck. Only one more damaged woodencrate to move. Where to place it? Looking around therenow appeared to be a low wall of chests around theinternal circumference of the shaft. I just pointed to thenearest location I thought would be a secure place tostand the damaged chest. Just a few feet away fromwhere they were standing. 236

THE MOSES EFFECTMasterson and Donaldson bent to lift the chest. Whiledoing so one of the iron hinges of the wooden crate thatwas hanging loosely became detached and flew passedDonaldson’s face as he was bending. Fortunately, itmissed his face, but then it became attached to one of thecoils.“What the… what was that?” Masterson asked as hestood up and looked at the attached broken hingesuspended from one of the coils. “The magnetic field hasattracted the detached hinge” came the reply fromMasterson. The conversation continued “Why haven’t the othercrate hinges and iron clasps that are also attached to thewooden crates done the same?” asked Masterson. “It’sprobably due to the fact they are more securely attachedto the crates and the weight within them makes them lesslikely to move” I commented. They both looked at me surprised. “I do have a First inQuantum Physics, I’m not altogether green, anexpression meaning not totally lacking in experience.Water, even sea water, is weakly diamagnetic, consequently a magnet is needed to force the water outof this chamber, if you want to call it a chamber.”“That’s all very well, but why did it attract the hinge?”asked a perplexed Masterson. “It’s still a magnet andmagnets attract iron and other metals as you know.” Iassumed he knew that. I continued “We ought to bepleased we are inside this chamber and not outside.” 237

JAMES YOUNGThey both looked at me perplexed and in unison said“Why!” “Because,\" I explained, “If the Polarity of theMagnets were reversed, we’d be crushed under theweight of fifty or sixty iron canon weighing, one or oneand a half ton each. The reason that hasn’t happened isthat the magnetic field that would have drawn the canon‘In’, is keeping the canon ‘Out’. Just as the water isbeing kept out.” I gave a little smile of satisfaction.“Why did the hinge attach itself to the coil?” Mastersonasked. “Because the hinge was on the ‘Inside’ not the‘Outside’ of the ‘Magnetic coils.’” An expression ofdawning appeared on Masterson’s face as he said “Oh!”Donaldson brought that line of conversation to an abruptend when he asked “Where’s that equipment we askedfor? We’ve been down here for quite some time.”Sergeant Hugo Castillo was off his chair like a startledrabbit and rushing to Captain Pablo Morales officeexclaiming as he went. “Captain! Captain! It’s beginningagain! It’s beginning again!”Captain Morales could hear Castillo’s rapid approacheven before he entered his office. Morales, was sittingat his desk, gave a sigh of resignation and leanedforward, resting his left elbow on his desk. He thenraised his left hand and rested his chin on his raised openleft hand palm and awaited the inevitable.Into the office of Captain Pablo Morales as he sat withhis head resting on his left hand came an enthusiasticSergeant Hugo Castillo. “Captain!” Before he could 238

THE MOSES EFFECTspeak any further, Morales held up both hands and said“I know Sergeant, I heard you coming and the answer isstill… NO!”“But Sir!” Castillo pleaded! “They wouldn’t be back ifthey were not engaged in something more than rescuingrefugees. Have we not any Air Reconnaissance Training,Air Sea Rescue, or offshore activity that couldn’t beaccidentally diverted to investigate?”Captain Morales lamented, “I wish my dog that I takeinto the hills when I go Wild Boar hunting on theoccasional Sunday was as tenacious as you Hugo. Mydog spends most of it’s time asleep. It sleeps that muchit’ll not know when it’s dead!”Did Sergeant Castillo detect a weakening in his superiorofficer?“Get me Armilla Helicopter Base if you wouldSergeant.”“Yes Sir!” was the jubilant reply of Sergeant Castillo asalmost burst through the office door, struggling to openit in his haste. Morales followed the Sergeant to theSergeant’s station where he, after contacting theHelicopter Base in Armilla, was handed the Telephonereceiver.“This is Captain Pablo Morales of the Spanish NationalDirectorate of Strategic Military Intelligence, I wish tospeak to the Officer of the Day.”“One moment sir,” came the reply “I will connect you 239

JAMES YOUNGimmediately.”“Is that you Pablo?” Came an enthusiastic voice over thetelephone.“Yes” was the guarded reply.“Pablo, it’s me Alejandro.”“Alejandro?” was Morales query.“Si mi amigo. It is I Alejandro Rodriguez.”“When?… How?... What?… I… I...”“I’ve only just been transferred here from Cadiz. It’sgood to hear your voice. What can I do for you?” wasAlejandro’s spirited reply.Composing himself Morales asked his old friend, “Howlong have you been there in Armilla?”“Just a few days” was Alejandro’s reply.“Have you had the opportunity to go through the DayBook?”“Yes, I have. Why do you ask?”“You’ll have noticed that I made a request to investigatesome unusual activity off the coast of Gibraltar a shortwhile ago.”“I did Pablo and the results seemed satisfactory. Why doyou ask?” 240

THE MOSES EFFECT“I’d like you to send out another helicopter patrol.”“Pablo. I am informed and I believe you know, we haveinstructions not to go near that location. And that’s fromour Ambassador in London via our Top Brass. Are youtrying to get us shot!”“No! No! Alejandro. We’ve intercepted some radiotransmissions that make us think the British are up tosomething and we need to know what it is. Are there anyTraining Missions close by, with two of your people on-board, who could inadvertently wander over the area, accidentally, if you know what I mean”“You’ll owe me big time for this Pablo. I haven’tforgiven you for getting us thrown out of that restaurantin Madrid when we were on a two day pass while wewere doing our Training. You’d told the Chef that thatthe meal was inedible. I was enjoying mine.”Morales smiled to himself and said “I still remember thatwith fondness. Will you do this Alejandro. I will oweyou Big Time, as you say.”“OK! I’ll do it.”“Muchas Gracias Alejandro. Muchas Gracias. Please letme know what you find out.” He then hung up.It was three long impatient hours before the telephonerang. The ringing seemed to fill the whole office as allwaited to find out if there was a resolution to the matter. The telephone seemed to ring for an interminable longtime for all who were waiting. 241

JAMES YOUNGMorales sat looking at the telephone with a feeling ofapprehension. Finally, he picked up the handset. He spoke “Captain Morales.” Silence permeated thewhole office as all waited expectantly.“You were right! Pablo” Rodriguez said enthusiastically.“The British are up to something! During our accidentalnavigational error, the crew observed what they believedto be two converted Oil Tankers. Between the twovessels there was some sort of connecting construction. They couldn’t see what it was because the structure wascovered with camouflage netting. The aircraft were ableto take video footage of the activity.”“That’s excellent. Was there anything else unusualAlejandro?” Morales enquired.“Yes, there was. Two or three cranes with their jibspointing toward the structure and their cables goingthrough the camouflage netting. It’s all clearly seen onthe video.”“What was the reason for that?” came Morales’ nextquestion.“It wasn’t clear. But they obviously must be lifting orlowering something” Rodriguez replied.“Alejandro! We need to contact Special Forces inAlicante.” 242

THE MOSES EFFECT“Pablo. We cannot do that! Remember, we’ve directspecific orders not to interfere with this activity, and thatcame from our Ambassador in London via our PrimeMinister and High Command!”“They are not here!! And we’ve got enough evidence, witnesses from our own personnel and recordedtransmissions to prove that to delay would bedetrimental to Spain’s interests. We must act now, before it’s too late.”There was a long pause before Alejandro replied. Hisreply was preceded by a long exhalation of breath. Hethen began “I just don’t know… to go against DirectOrders could mean a Dishonourable Discharge, if notimprisonment.”“We’d have greater problems if we didn’t respond to thissituation. They’d hang us out to dry. Would you want tobe responsible for failing to act on the evidence that wehave regarding these covert actions by the British?”Alejandro Dominguez responded “If this goes pearshaped Pablo, your life won’t be worth living.”“Alejandro. Have I ever gotten you into any situationthat…”“Do you want a list!” Alejandro interrupted.“Alejandro. This is serious! I’m not talking aboutchildish pranks here. We need to be resolved in thismatter and see it through. Your people can provide whatinformation they have and my team will do the same.” 243

JAMES YOUNG“OK… if you insist. What do you propose?”“As I initially suggested. We contact Special Forces inAlicante. I’ll make the initial contact and you canprovide corroboration if needed. Can you download thevideo footage and send it over the internet to the U.O.E.Base in Alicante. Alejandro. We’ll come out smelling ofroses over this, you mark my words.”“It’s coming out smelling of what they put on roses thatI’m concerned about.”“Alejandro. It’ll be fine. I’ll contact Special Forcesnow.”“Very well Pablo.”“This is Captain Pablo Morales of the Spanish NationalDirectorate of Strategic Military Intelligence I wish tospeak to Lieutenant Colonel Fernando De Gwuallo on amost urgent matter of National Importance!”“I’m afraid the Colonel is not to be interrupted.”“Did you hear what I said! This is an urgent matter ofnational importance! If you don’t want to be beating offthe flies and avoiding camel dung in the Spanishprotectorate of Morocco, put me through to the ColonelNOW!”“Lieutenant Colonel De Gwuallo here. This had betterbe beyond urgent to interrupt me or it’ll be you swattingaway flies in Morocco. Don’t ever threaten my staff.”That’ll be his privilege Morales thought. 244

THE MOSES EFFECT“Sorry sir,\" replied Captain Morales. “You’ll see fromthe transmission I have taken the liberty of forwarding toyou that the British are up to something off the coast ofGibraltar.”“You’ve interrupted me for this! The British are alwaysup to something!”“Yes sir, but please bear with me. You’ll see from theVideo that this is not normal activity. You’ll notice thisis extremely unusual. As part of the DNIEN we are usedto observing the British actions around Gibraltar. It’s myopinion there’s more to this than meets the eye.”Morales could hear over the telephone that the Colonel, who had his hand over the mouthpiece, was instructingone of his staff to arrange the video that we’dtransmitted to be patched through to him.“Morales.”“Yes sir.” Morales replied.“I’m watching the Video now. Explain.”“You see the two vessels connected together by thestructure between them.”“Yes, go on.”“Also note the camouflage netting covering thestructure. The cranes lowering or raising items orequipment through the Netting. This isn’t normal. Theyare up to something.” 245

JAMES YOUNG“I agree. What do you think it is?”“I don’t know. I am suspicious Sir. In addition to whatwe’ve observed, we’ve received instruction not tointerfere. But this cannot be right. Not to at leastinvestigate would surly be a dereliction of our duty.”“Captain. From where came the instruction not tointerfere?”“I believe from our London Ambassador via the PrimeMinisters Office in Madrid.”“Just a moment, sir. I’ve just been handed acommunication from one of the vessels we’re interestedin. It’s from a Captain Rafa Mendoza, the Captain of thevessel Cosmos. He informs us that as a Spanish Nationalhe cannot stand back and see the Hijacking by theBritish of Spanish Gold from the sunken treasure shipHMS Sussex.”Sergeant Hugo Castillo, who brought the message stoodexpectantly hopping from one foot to the other in hisexcitement. “I told you sir, the British were up to nogood.”“OK Hugo. Just settle down. We’re dealing with it. Backto your post Hugo and Gracias.”Lieutenant Colonel De Gwuallo sat thoughtfully. “Thisis the treasure of which we’ve been arguing with theBritish for decades. OK. We will investigate and I’llinform the Prime Minister of our actions. After we’veinvestigated! We can deal with the repercussions then.” 246

THE MOSES EFFECT“Get me Commandante Fernando Gonzalezimmediately,” instructed Lieutenant Colonel DeGwuallo. While the call to the Commandante was being obtainedthe Lieutenant Colonel informed captain Morales “Wehave this in-hand now captain. Gracias. We’ll handlematters now.”“Thank you sir for listening Adiós.” Morales hung-up.“Hugo. Good news. They have accepted our evidenceand are going to investigate.”“Fernando. This is Colonel Gwuallo” Why do they dothat, say they are a Colonel when they’re only aLieutenant Colonel, wishful thinking perhaps. “I wantyou to take seventy five of your best U.O.E. men andofficers and take control of the situation off the coast offGibraltar. You’ll get the coordinates and instruction in-flight.“Are we to expect trouble, sir? Asked CommandanteGonzalez.“No, I do not believe so. However, make sure your menare armed and ready for anything. The British will not bewanting a fire fight. If things don’t go to plan this willgo down as one of those incidents that never happened.”The three Chinook CH-47 helicopters took off fromAlicante with twenty five offices and men in eachaircraft. 247

JAMES YOUNG“Where did those helicopters come from!” PostulatedJorgensen as two helicopters hovered over Pegasus,Aurora and one over Stella disgorging their lethal cargo.“Why hasn’t the Cosmos warned us of their approach? They are supposed to be maintaining a security blanketover us.”Jorgensen rushed from the bridge of Pegasus to theRadio room and demanded “Get me Captain Mendoza! Now!”The reply from the Radio Operator of Cosmos was notwhat Jorgensen wanted to hear. “Captain Mendoza cannot be found sir.”“What do you mean! He can not be found? He must bethere.”“I’m sorry, sir. He’s just not here!” The Radio Operatorcontinued, “The last communication that I passed on toCaptain Mendoza was a message from our OperationsRoom indicating that the radar had picked up threeunidentified aircraft approaching from the north, fromSpain and are heading straight for us.”“Why was I not informed!” Jorgensen demanded.”“I… I… don’t know… When I handed Captain Mendozathe communication he left the bridge. I thought he wasgoing to contact you and inform you, but he’s just...Disappeared! I have no explanation!”The response of Jorgensen was “Get me First LieutenantChesterton.” 248

THE MOSES EFFECT“Yes Sir” confirmed the Radio Operator.First Lieutenant Rupert Chesterton, a man in his mid-thirties, medium height and a little extra around thewaist, picked up the Radio Transmitter and said“Chesterton here sir. How can I be of service?”“Rupert. For starters, you can find me your Captain.Where is he?”“Captain Mendoza informed me that he’s been orderedto Aurora to assist in this operation and left me incharge” replied Chesterton.“Who ordered him to Aurora?”“I assumed it was you, sir.”“There’s been no such order issued by me, nor anyoneelse! How did he get to Aurora?”“He used the launch sir. In fact, I believe it has returned, leaving Captain Mendoza on-board the Aurora”explained Chesterton.“Have Cosmos remain on station, I’ll see what CaptainMendoza’s up to.”“Aye, Sir” First Lieutenant Chesterton confirmed. The Commodore replaced the radio handset just asCommandante Fernando Gonzalez entered the Bridge ofPegasus and met Commodore as he entered from theRadio room. 249

JAMES YOUNG“Who are you and what are you doing on board myvessel?” demanded Jorgensen as he recognized theuniform of the Spanish officer and his insignia.”Commandante Gonzalez saluted Jorgensen and began, “Iam Commandante Fernando Gonzalez of the Unidad deOperaciones Especiales de Espana, to whom do I havethe honour of addressing.”“Let me introduce to you Commodore Karl Jorgensen ofhis Britannic Majesties ship Pegasus.” Jorgensen had notnoticed Captain Mendoza, who had followed theCommandante onto the Bridge and now stepped frombehind the Commandante.Jorgensen had to compose himself when he sawMendoza. “What’s going on Rafa? Why are you here?”“All will be explained Commodore” interruptedCommandante Gonzalez.Ignoring what had just been said and looking at theCommandante, Jorgensen demanded “What are youdoing on-board my ship?”“It is not just this vessel Commodore but we also controlall the vessel’s involved in this illegal operation” said asmiling Gonzalez. “Everything has gone exceptionallywell thanks to the cooperation and extraordinaryintelligence provided by Captain Mendoza.”“What do you mean… You’re in control of all thevessels?” 250
