C H R I S B O Y T O N Bowyer and shaft-maker extraordinaire, th who passed away at 11.30pm on Sunday 8 July 2018. Eulogy by Carol Edwards 4

I knew Chris for 30 years or more, as he ‘took over’ making arrow shafts for the World when Acme Wood Products in Oregon were no longer allowed to cut POC. (You may remember the problem with the owl!)… even now POC isn’t cut, it is deadfall! He turned up at an evening class I was running with lots of arrow shafts made from different woods. We spent several weeks trying them all out ourselves and then letting the beginners have a go with them as well. Chris ended up using pinus sylvestris (Scots Pine) as it was a great arrow wood and, grown in Sweden, it was planted more than it was harvested. It meant it would (hopefully) never run out. He sold them all over the World, including America where they were sold by Three Rivers Archery shop. About 6 or 7 years later he started making the 9/32 and 1/4 inch shafts that for me became the biggest sellers. As far as I know Chris was the only person making these 'little' shafts that suit so many archers, including myself and my husband, Mick. Chris was an absolute fountain of knowledge when it came to all things arrow shaft and bow wise. I shall miss being able to ‘pick his brains’ for all sorts of things from how to get my planer thicknesser to work to what to wear at a medieval banquet! Chris’s first arrow shafts He helped my husband, Mick, with his bow-making and was always ready to show how to make things from wood. Chris made the folding saws for Ray Mears’ Woodlore shop for many years and did several films with Ray. One of those was when Chris made a bow using only flint tools. I expect a lot of you have watched it. Above - Chris’s first arrow shafts in yellow van 5

Chris tree hugging! Chris in 2017 Chris, tree and Alfie 6

For many years I sold Chris's beautiful longbows Chris on horse at my workshop, until they became so popular he couldn't keep up with my demands on his time and only made them to order for himself. I still have my own Boyton bow - it’s 22 years old now and still shoots as good as the day I first got it. It is only 24lb at 23\", but by golly it shoots so well. A while ago Chris had problems with his heart and had an operation to correct it. He took a while to recover, but had seemed really well for the last few years. Unfortunately, unbeknown to him, he had a melanoma on his face (the GP didn’t think it was a problem!!) and it ended up as a brain tumour that caused him to pass away after just 9 weeks from diagnosis. I can’t believe he is gone and when I spoke to his wife Helen, she said the family are still in shock over the speed it all happened. Our hearts go out to Helen and his three children - Dan, Charlotte and Jamie, as well as his grandchildren. Chris's workshop was only a few miles from mine and he and Alfie, his Jack Russell, were regular visitors. We spent many hours chatting about archery and medieval get-together's, while sitting in front of my workshop fire and drinking tea. I can't believe we will never do that again. Chris was one of the nicest people I've ever had the privilege to know and I'll miss him very much. Rest in peace Chris - Lots of love, Chris with bow Carol. 7

Oakwood Bowmen Del and Annie Newman HT Trophy shoot report rd 3 June 2018 by Mel Horne. Del and Annie Newman have been members of Oakwood Bowmen for twenty plus years and have both in the past dedicated much of their time to the running of the club. For several years Annie was our Treasurer and chief cake baker whilst Del took on the role of shoot secretary, taking bookings and laying out all our shoots. Although they both retired from Committee life a couple of years ago Del New- man still plays a pivotal role with meet and greet, a welcome briefing and organ- ising medals for our monthly shoots. Del is now a recycled delinquent teenager at the tender age of 81 and still shooting regularly home and away, he is also well known on the Archery circuit for his quick wit, banter and fabulous hand crafted leather work - a man of many talents and a much loved Honorary member of Oakwood Bowmen. The dedicated Trophies in Del and Annie's’ names and preferred shooting style go a small way to thanking them for all the hard work and loyalty to Oakwood. Thanks Del and Annie, we love you both. Happy shooting – Mel. 8

FAN UK would like you to meet our FAN UK would like you to meet our FAN UK would like you to meet our FEATURED ARCHER FEATURED ARCHER FEATURED ARCHER * Megan Tinker * * Megan Tinker * * Megan Tinker * Highly accomplished and well respected field & target English, British, European and World Archery Junior; current holder of the 2018 titles of Senior Lady English Field Champion, Senior Lady British Field Champion & Senior Lady Yorkshire Target Champion; soon to represent Great Britain at the 2018 World Field Archery Championships in Italy this October in the Junior Women Individual and Team events, as well as full-time student!, she very generously gave Hels some of her time exceptionally rare spare time to share her experiences and future aspirations with us - thanks Meg! QUICK FACTS! Location: Doncaster Bow Class: Recurve Club: Dearne Valley Archery Club Junior County Records: 20+ Junior National Records: 2 Shoots for: Club, County, England, & Team GB 12

Hi Megan - can you tell us a little bit about who you are? Also, well done for fitting archery in with your studies etc. - you're a superstar! Thank you for saying I’m a superstar! I’m 18 years old and I’m a part of Dearne Valley Archery Club where I shoot recurve. I live in Doncaster but soon I am off to live in York where I’ll be studying Creative Writing! How did you get into archery and how long have you been shooting for? I’ve been shooting for roughly around 5 years. I first read and watched the Hunger Games – as well as the Olympics – where I completely fell in love with the sport. I then tried a have-a-go for my 13th birthday and 6 or so months later, I was on my beginners course at Dearne Valley being coached by Amy Oliver and her family! What is it about field archery What has been your biggest achievement that you love the most? in field archery so far? Also, in target? My biggest achievement is definitely being Everything. I find field archery to be an selected for the European Field Championships adventure of some sort. Every time I shoot at held in Slovenia last year, as well as winning a new course it is an adventure as you current holder of the 2018 titles of never know what to expect. I also love how senior British field champion at Overton at the each target is different as well as the process end of May. At both events I shot so well and had a strong mental process throughout. behind each shot you take. The environment is so calming and really helps For target it would be taking 3rd place at as well me focus on the routine of my last Junior Nationals last year, as well as becoming the my shots rather than the she very generously gave Hels some of her time senior county champion at outcome. Plus, everyone is so exceptionally rare spare time to share her experiences and future nice! the beginning of June. Which class do you shoot? Which competition would I’ve shot recurve for as long you like to win most? as I’ve been doing archery. I’ve Not including hopefully had a go at barebow which making it to an Olympics, is rather fun but quite I would really love to win a challenging and I’d like to world championships – target try it again. I’ve also tried or field. I feel like that would compound but I get too scared be the highlight of my life, when trying to anchor or set let alone my archery career. the trigger off! I’m happy with shooting my recurve for now. 13

continuous practise just focusing on the physical and mental shot routine as well as building up strength. Sometimes if my particular focus is practising slopes and I can’t get up to Dearne Valley’s woodlands to practise I shoot off of my shed roof! Despite being quite high up it’s a lot of fun and helps me a lot when it comes to shooting steep slopes, especially like the ones I found at Overton! If you could offer one piece of advice to new archers, what would that be? Enjoy your shooting, train as much as you can, take lots of advice. And try field archery! I don’t think many people want to shoot field – whether it be because they are scared of the unmarked rounds, they are scared of losing form or whether they just don’t like the look of it. I think you have to at least try it before you can develop an opinion of it. I hear all kinds of archers say they are scared of losing arrows or worried about Where have your competitive shoots losing taken you over the years and form, but that’s really not the case. If you where is your favourite location? miss an arrow it is found easily and not only that but One of my favourite places to visit is Wales. field definitely benefits your technique both physically and mentally as it helps you to build up The scenery there is magnificent and the people are so friendly too. Pentref and Wrexham strength and helps you to understand your bow are two of my favourite courses as the locations and form better. So for any beginners considering are phenomenal and the courses are amazing! trying field archery, do it! It’s seriously worth it. One of my other favourite places to shoot is at Avalon which is where I shot recently. The location of the shoot was beautiful with various different settings to shoot in. One of my favourite shots was a long shot that was in a small valley by the side of the road and on either side of the valley it was covered in bluebells. It was a stunning shot and a lovely laid out course too! What sort of things do you do to practice? Do you have a set training schedule or do you adjust your practice to suit different competitions? Over winter I do most of my technical changes where I focus on things I want to change or need to improve on. Then over summer I do a lot of 14

Do you have any routines when you and mental shot routine as well as building prepare for a big shoot - if so, up strength. Sometimes if my particular focus what are they and do they work?!!!! Prior to a competition I always make sure that Valley’s woodlands to practise I shoot off of my equipment and sight marks are fine as well my shed roof! Despite being quite high up it’s as focusing on my mental process, which I do a lot of fun and helps me a lot when it through a lot of visualisation. This helps me to comes to shooting steep slopes, especially like trust my shot if the weather is not good on the day as well as allowing me to concentrate more on simply shooting the shot rather than focusing on what to do to make sure the shot is good. If you could offer one piece of advice to What equipment do you rely upon to keep you on top form? I have three lucky items that I always make sure I have when I shoot... my towel on my quiver from Slovenia, my MyBo visor and my pair of red converse. I honestly don’t know why they are they just don’t like the look of it. I think you lucky, I just find that whenever I have them on me it improves my mental routine and the shots What is coming up for you in the next year? I’ve just been selected for the World Archery are scared of losing arrows or worried about feel better. With my bow, I’m currently shooting a pink Win and Win Inno Max which I’ve had for Championships later this year in Cortina, Italy. the past 4 years. Not only is it a stunning riser I’ve had a really strong and successful shooting but it is so lovely to shoot! season and I’ve had some really good shoots so was hoping I would be selected! Alongside this I’m looking forward to starting my education in York in September as well as continuing to improve in field and target. I still have lots to learn and there is always room for improvement so I’m just looking forward to that! Who inspires you? Is it your family, fellow archers or someone else? My parents are my biggest inspirations. My dad takes me to every competition we go to and is there either giving me pep talks, offering advice or simply just making me laugh. He’s taken me all over the country for the past 5 years and has watched me shoot, whether it be stuck in a tent or in the middle of forest, he’s supported me regardless. My mum has been there for me like my dad and always helps me figure things out regardless of what it is. She’s also really funny! She’s a very strong person who I aspire to be like in and out of archery. 15

Do you have any hobbies or do you not have time?! The past few months have been a struggle as I’ve had exams, so time is something that I have not had! However, I love to write which is something I’ve done since I was at least 6 or 7. Exam season has been so hard as I’ve had so much motivation to write but I’ve had to revise instead! Other than writing I love to read and watch films, as well as having a Saturday job at a fireplace shop in Doncaster. Do you have sponsors and if so, how do they support you? I’m sponsored by the lovely Merlin Archery in Durham! I was first sponsored in the about March 2017 and they have helped massively It’s been great getting to know with my equipment. When I needed to a spare you Meg - thank you for sharing bow for Slovenia they helped set it up and has your time & life with FAN UK. shot amazing since. I cannot thank them enough! We wish you all the very best of luck with your future archery competitions, in Italy at the Worlds later this year and with your literary studies! We are all behind you - Go Team Meg!! 16

Del The Cat’s “Bowyer’s Diary” ~ Arrows and stuff... ~ by Derek Hutchison (AKA Del the Cat on various archery forums!) A bow is no good without arrows, or a string for that matter; and when I talk about arrows I mean wood (or bamboo) shafts. Carbon fibre is (IMO) nasty stuff on environmental grounds with respect to the energy footprint to make them and the fact that they can splinter and stay in the ground with the potential to injure both human and animal. Let’s start with a few myths and misconceptions about arrows, let’s tackle some in no particular order… but I’ll try to remember that we’re talking about field archery! 1. You can’t shoot wooden arrows from a compound. Total nonsense - what do you think they shot from the first compounds they made back in the 1960s? 2. You should shoot arrows weighing 10gpp (grains per pound (of draw weight)). Again, no, it’s a useful guide for hunting weight arrows. But isn’t really applicable for all bow weights etc. If you want a flatter trajectory (or extra range) you can go much lower, say 5gpp is a safe minimum, but you can go even lower. Even 3gpp is nowhere near a dry loose. As under the huge acceleration that has a lot of inertia. The downside of going light is greater susceptibility to being deflected by wind or the odd leaf or twig that’s in the way and of course the greater chance of breakage. 3. Correct spine depends on the draw weight of the bow. Well, draw weight is a rough guide but that’s all. It depends on the bow style (does it have a cut away arrow pass and is it made of modern materials?) How fast it accelerates the arrow, also point weight and arrow length. 4. Over-spined arrows shoot left, under-spined arrows shoot right. Tricky one this as I’ve found over-spined do go left, but under-spined just waggle more in flight but don’t actually fly to the right. (All of this assumes a right handed archer shooting conventionally). (Just my observation, others may disagree.) 5. “Arrow Slits” in castles… next time you are in a castle, pretend you have your bow and draw up as if trying to shoot out from one of these. Chances are your imaginary upper limb will be pushed up through the roof and even if you could shoot your arrow would probably smash as was still flexing as it tried to go through the slit (assuming you hit it!) IMO the slits are to keep arrows out! Maybe you could shoot a crossbow from them, but even that’s going to be tricky. Talking of the arrow flexing as it leaves the bow, next time you have to shoot through a narrow gap provided by a sadistic course layer maybe try canting your bow over horizontal! That way the flexing will be up and down rather than left to right it will reduce the chance of the flexing causing the arrow to whack the tree. Before someone says “Ah! Maybe that’s how they shot through arrow slits” I still don’t think it’s practical as often the sits are in narrow alcoves though the thickness of the walls with no room for a bow canted or otherwise. 22

Strings… some people buy ‘em made, some like to make ’em. Personally I make them using a good quality Fastflite style string (I’m currently using AstroFlite). There are a lot of stories about Fastflite splitting nocks and damaging wood. I’ve only ever seen it on a crossbow prod, if the nock splits it was probably poorly made with the groove too near the end of the horn where it meets the limb. The problem I’ve noticed with modern string material is that it can slip when using a Bowyer’s knot, that’s why I make continuous loop strings with a served loop at each end. I’ve had a bit of a break over the Summer not making so many bows, but tinkering with the crossbow and flight arrows. I have to confess the crossbow prod was a failure despite many attempts. It did shoot a 200fps, but rapidly lost weight from 120# down to about 75#!!!! Let’s start with a few myths and misconceptions about arrows, let’s tackle some in no I’ll press on but with a fibreglass/Maple prod when my enthusiasm resurfaces (already work in progress!) My flight bow/arrow saga had better results with “Il Bastardo” a short ELB of about 62” nock to nock won the ILAA Mary Rose flight shoot by a decent margin (shot by my trusty test pilot John Turton). It started life as a 26” at which draw length it was difficult to control with no sensible anchor point, this led to it biting the archer’s bicep and gave rise to the name. We progressed to 28” and finally 30” draw with a little re-tillering. The bow garnered much interest and several other bowyers will be trying shorter bows next year. There was also some moaning from a disgruntled archer that it didn’t qualify as a longbow as it was short… total nonsense, it met every part of the ILAA spec’ and had it been shot by my wife it would have looked a perfectly good height :-) The warm weather didn’t help the distances achieved and 320 yards was the best; the others didn’t even get near 300. I s’pose you all want a picture, so here’s a few, one is of the bottom nock on a Yew primitive spined arrows shoot right. Tricky one this as I’m making. Black waterbuffalo horn with a 10mm long bone pin inserted, classy and elegant. It’s a bit of an in joke. I once had a similar become unglued on a very wet shoot don’t actually fly to the right. (All of this assumes a right handed archer shooting and someone said I should put a nail though it, I went home re-glued the nock and fitted a “nail” made of silver, it looked very good, so it’s a bit of motif I repeat now and then. down rather than left to right it will reduce the chance of the flexing causing the through arrow slits” I still don’t think it’s practical as often the sits are in narrow 23

th SHOOT REPORT ~ 20 May 2018 The shoot got off to a great start with the weather being very kind to us again (you can thank me another time for that). The 36 x 3D course was set by a small group of club members who had not set a course before, all done under watchful eyes and checked for safety by myself. Going by the comments received, I must congratulate the group members for a pleasing course, other than the over pond shot that caught a few people out. The catering and raffle went down well and again we must thank Lionel Rodrigues for the all day entertainment at admin. Huge thanks to all the attending archers for the comments made during and after the shoot, it makes it all worthwhile and encouraging for the course setters. Thanks for all the help in bringing the targets in after the shoot, it meant that I got home for tea at 6.30 (bonus). Delamere Field Archers ~ Open Shoot 10th June 2018 ~ The Cheshire mosquitoes gathered in force on the morning of Sunday 10th June – they were obviously aware of the impending arrival of over 100 fit & tasty archers! Comments on the day, & since, indicate that they fed well, despite copious amounts of spray being applied! As always, archers started arriving before 08:30, so registration & catering were quickly busy. Archers continued to arrive for some time, so it was 10:30 before walk out commenced, & the shoot got underway. The new course is using parts of the wood that have not been used for some time (if at all), & several new targets had also been deployed so it was a new experience for all visiting archers. Thankfully, score cards started being handed in before 15:30 & all had been received by 16:30. Huge thanks have to go to our course laying team of Liz, Tony, Dave, Tom, & Ritchie for all of the hard work & ingenuity that they put into the design of the course, & the use that they make of natural features to provide challenging shots. Thanks also to the catering team of Phillipa, Derek & Viv, who kept up a steady supply of food & drink throughout the day. Mention must also be made of Pat Belfield who once again provided a wonderful selection of cakes, scones, & almond slices – all baked by her own fair hand! Finally, of course, thanks to all of the archers who travelled to Delamere on the day, some covering considerable distances in order to do so. We trust that you enjoyed the shoot & we look forward to seeing you again in September. Switched to field archery in about 1972 after reading about it in an American archery magazine. Set up a crude field shoot in a local woodland and found it to be much more fun than line shooting. Something unique about me: Prior to retirement, decrepitude and bits falling off I was a team member of Cave Rescue and Mountain Rescue for many years, specialising in trauma care; (the most memorable and unpleasant call out was to assist with the Lockerbie plane crash). Before the body gave up I caved, climbed, fell ran, mountain biked etc. etc. Now a sedate and grumpy old field archer. 30

All British Field Archery Championships 2018 by Steve Allam, Chairman, Overton Black Arrows www.overtonblackarrows.org Photos by Mark Davies (club member) The “All British” is attended by the best archers from all corners of the United Kingdom; England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. This year’s event was hosted by Overton Black Arrows at their field course in the North Wessex Downs AONB, near the village of Kingsclere in Hampshire. The courses set out on the “Warren, Coombe & Peter Hastings Memorial Woods” are well known to be some of the most challenging in the UK and this years was no exception. One competitor measured walking more than 15 miles and climbing the equivalent of a 120 storey building over the two days. Shots varied from an extremely steep 60m downhill onto an 80cm target to 5m ‘bunnies’ – triple 20cm target faces. The competition ran for two days with one hundred and forty competitors; archers shoot one day on an “unmarked” course of 24 targets; where distances to the targets were unknown, the other day on a marked course, where the distances are known but also longer. Awards were presented by Kirby Sinclair, MD of The Roasting Party (event sponsor). For Overton Black Arrows this was a huge event, and a great success. In addition to hosting st the event, four club members shot: Jodie Buckner was 1 in the U15 ladies recurve category, th her father Richard came 8 in the gents recurve and club chairman, Steve Allam, was 16 in th th the same category. Bill Jones shot in the Barebow category and came 17 . The team event was won by England this year. Full results can be found on the club website. 34

~ Labyrinth Archers ~ th Open Field Shoot, 10 June 2018 Eastleigh Farm, Stratton, Cornwall A nice sunny warm day, beautiful mature oak woodland, lots of tea, burgers and cakes; that was the story of Labyrinth Archers’ field shoot. Despite being formed twelve years ago and having set three Champs/3D courses, four South West Challenge courses and several Medieval type shoots, this was our first open shoot. 72 archers from as far as Bristol enjoyed a tricky and deceptive course of 36 game faces laid out in sloping oak woodland with a carpet of bluebells. These bluebells were the cause of much extra hard work beforehand as paths had to be strimmed and raked through them to make it safe to walk. Many thanks to Brian, Dominic, James and Trevor who helped with the carrying and placing the butts; also thanks to the ladies in the tea tent who kept the archers well fed. A special thanks to Rixdale Archery who donated a dozen made to measure arrow shafts to the raffle. All who attended praised the course and venue and can’t wait for next time; so I suppose we will have oblige them and do it all again next year!
