West Lothian Archers 2D shoot - 26th March 2023. Report by Linda Sutherland & pictures by Eryn Jack. Well what a day! It was absolutely freezing but it didn't deter 44 archers who attended for the first shoot of 2023. The banter and atmosphere was amazing. 10

Thank you everyone for a great day and also to our new members for the lovely comments. Thanks also to our admin team; Lesley Jack for the delicious soup & stovies; to our members for putting out faces & helping tidy away at the end and to Eryn Jack for capturing these wonderful photos! 11

THE MEDIEVAL SOCIETY’S 60th ANNIVERSARY SHOOT by OH Boyd - Medieval Society Hon. Member & Woodcarver to the Palace. The Medieval Society‘s annual St George’s Day shoot was held at Belmont House nr Faversham. This event was special because it celebrated the Medieval Society’s 60th anniversary. Despite the rain it went well and we welcomed our special guests - Dr Toby Capwell (plus bronze medallist son, Issac) and Deborah Lee, both from the Wallace Collection and now retired; and the French contingent of Annette, Sylvie, and Christian. The competing archers. 18

Pictured left: Wet but happy! Christian deservedly won the gold medal for most hits while Steve Gosling became Captain of Archers, winning the coveted cup exclusive to Medieval Society members. Cup Winner, Steve Gosling - Captain of Archers. Gold medallist, Christian. 20

The shooting was followed by mulled wine and excellent, steaks with salad and coleslaw - as always, beautifully cooked under difficult circumstances by the ladies who also shot between preparation. This 60th anniversary day was a day that followed firmly in the tradition of companionship, brotherhood, friendship and the bonhomie of archers without stress or strain and with no agendas other than the fellowship of the Longbow, which was always the hallmark of the Medieval Society and is now fiercely protected by our able Marshal Gary Bourne who, despite his recent illness, bore the brunt of the work to organise the event. A truly memorable day despite the rain. The Medieval Society’s Annual St. George’s Day / John Waller Memorial Shoot This year’s St. George’s day/John Waller Memorial shoot was going to be something special, taking place in the 60th year of the Medieval Society. I had sent out the invitations, the food was arranged and I had painted new red rose targets. On a more personal note however, out of the blue I collapsed at home one afternoon, just under 2 weeks before the date of the shoot on April 23rd. After only a few minutes the ambulance arrived. The paramedics took my blood pressure and a drip was inserted into my arm. My blood pressure was 60/40!!! I was taken to the nearby Hospital where I ended up in the resuscitation unit with intravenous lines in both arms and blood being taken from both wrists. It turned out that I had suffered from an infection of some kind and after 24 hours in the hospital and 3 cardiograms I was allowed to go home on light duties. I had invited guests from hundreds of miles away, such as France, Hull, Suffolk & London - I could not let them down but I was still not 100% and found myself faced with the possibility of cancelling the shoot. I discussed this idea with my partner Hilary (who was in charge of the catering) who convinced me to see how I was in a few days’ time. Hilary was right! I felt 22

much better and decided it should go ahead. The weather was terrible - rain and wind all day - but everyone soldiered on and managed to have an enjoyable day as only the British can. We were able to celebrate St. George’s day and remember the founder after all. I was unable to complete the shoot, finding it too tiring to continue, but I stayed until the very end to present the medals. This will certainly be a 60th anniversary to remember. Gary Bourne, Marshal of the Medieval Society. 23

Company of 60 April 2023 Bluebell Shoot Report, pics & scores provided by Shaun Bateman. Wet weather was predicted which no doubt accounted for some no-shows on the day, but fortunately 82 archers still turned up. Luckily they only had to endure some light rain before things dried up completely for the afternoon. Our bluebells, blooming later than in recent years, still managed a decent, if patchy display. The two 20-shot courses chosen offered a good mix of terrain for visitors, with the tower shot on Savannah and the across-the-pond crocodile shot on Bluebell being perhaps amongst the most memorable. Across the day a number of our regular medal winners complained of not shooting very well, but with the overall scores down across several bow styles compared to our last shoot, we’d like to think that it was some tricky course laying that was at play. Thanks to all those who came, plus the usual committed volunteers who made sure the day went smoothly. Our next shoot is our Club 50th Anniversary Friendly on September 10th. Although a friendly in format, with a rolling start and finish, we do plan to offer a 50 3D challenge course with scores being published afterwards. For those perhaps not wanting the competitive element, our other two courses will also be available to anyone wanting a more laid-back day. 30

~ The Bowyer’s Diary ~ by Derek Hutchison (AKA “Del the Cat”). “ Odds and Ends. ” I’ve been catching up on a variety of projects, making a primitive style bow from Rowan (another to add to the list of those I’ve used), which is pretty much like a cross between Hazel and Ash. Then I got an enquiry via an old friend to take some weight off a 130# laminate warbow. Well, it’s not really something that interested me, so rather than do that I asked what draw weight and draw length he actually wanted (100# @30”) and offered to make him a bow if I had a suitable stave - after all, it seemed silly to ship a bow back and forth at about £30 at time to do a weight reduction job I didn’t even fancy. Looking over my staves - they were alright, Angled but not impressive. Sapwood Ah! But once I put the drawknife into the Grain wood it was a revelation! A scruffy looking stave of English Yew with poorly defined heart/sap wood was much better than it appeared and I was hooked into the sheer joy of working Yew. By the end of the week I’d made a lovely 100# @ 30” English Yew Warbow. 36

100# Yew warbow - unstrung vs full draw Having finished that and done a couple of bow adjustments/repairs for some friends, I got back to tinkering with the Mkii Archer Automaton. I’m making this one mostly from steel so that I can get more precision, which will allow better control of finer movements. The plan is to get the individual movements working one at a time and then work on powering and coordinating the whole. The first tricky bit is trying to make the archer nock the arrow. If you analyse the action of correctly nocking an arrow it is ridiculously complex, so it’s necessary to make some sort of compromise. I will have the arrow standing upright as if stuck into the mud and the archer will push the bow downwards until the string catches the nock. Obviously, this will need some way of accurately locating the arrow to start with and some fairly precise movements, but I do enjoy a challenge! 37

I went to a different field shoot venue (HNA - Havering Nalgo Archers) on Father’s Day... it’s one of those clubs that I was aware of but couldn’t readily find out where it was! After some good-natured teasing, one of my mates sent a map (rather than totally incomprehensible directions). I took ‘Twister’ - my regular Yew primitive - and the Yew character primitive with hole through the limb, featured in the Oct-Nov 2022 issue of Field Archery News UK. I’d hardly shot that bow at all and is it a bow if it never gets shot? It was with some trepidation that I shot it at first because of the hole in the upper limb, however it was fast and felt very much the same as ‘Twister’, upon which it was modelled. I shot surprisingly well first half but tired rather as the day wore on. We were a group of 5, the others all shooting longbow, good company and a fine shoot. One of the guys asked if I’d make him a Yew primitive, OK I said… but it didn’t start well! I had a promising stave roughed out and put it on the tiller for a first flex BANG!! The right limb broke about 8” from the tip. Examining it showed the grain on the back to be running across the limb at about 45 degrees! Why didn’t I see it before? Ah, that would be because I leave the bark on and let it pop off as the bow flexes. I can only assume the twisted growth was induced by the wind. There was also a weak ring which showed as splits down either side of the stave. There was no rot and the ring was just separating... again, maybe wind stress (the tree had come down in a storm). It just shows you can’t win them all! 38

“Killygarry Archers, 14th May 2023” by Doc Smith. A fantastic day with Killygarry Archers and the weather played ball as well. Well done to Sean and the lads for all of your hard work setting out the woods with an SBG for us, especially with all of the bad weather we'd been having prior to the shoot... it couldn't have been easy. 40

It was good to see new faces enjoying themselves and - of course - the auld heads that we hadn't seen in a while. 41

Thanks to my shooting buddies today for the craic and good company ... 42

Welcome to Hoods & Maids! If this feature is new to you - although due to Covid-19 I can completely understand if you’ve forgotten about this feature which is my unique way of celebrating stunning field archery shots (both jammy & skill-based, but mostly jammy!) that only Robin Hood or Maid Marian themselves would’ve been able to pull off. It is also my way of celebrating the shots we all either dream of hitting or are so lucky that they need scoring before they fall out of the target! We all, regardless of age/ability, appear to rack up a fair few of these shots in our field archery careers so it is also my way of trying to include more people and show off their shots and celebrate them as the stars they are – albeit having stood in a healthy blob of jam or simply from being rather a fine shot, both are most welcome here! Ricochets, Barnes-Wallis classics, lucky legs, tree shots, “in-off”s, wind-assisted, carried into the target by well-paid woodland creatures, Robin Hoods, Pickering Awards (AKA the Pines Park Special!) … ALL are welcomed with open arms and appropriately celebrated!! Good shooting & please do share! You’re worth it ;-) Hels. 48

We now welcome, from Inverness FAC, the awesome * Tony * who was nominated by Jim Granger... “Hi Helen. Photo was taken 29/01/2023. I had seen in the Oct/ Nov edition the Robin and Marion 'mistakes' pics and thought of that. The culprit was Tony. The course was Inverness!” 49
