HENRY V - France campaign
Event day: Saturday 21st September 2024
The brainchild of Andrew Brodley, the Henry V’s medieval
France campaign shoot was a roaring success!
Here is what Andrew had to say about it all:
For the shoot I named the archer group
"Henry V's Salop Retinue"
. Below are
the unfolding exploits of the 'happy few' that I reported the following
day - 22nd September in the year 2024 - and who made it a wonderful,
memorable experience . . .
Yesterday some 35 dysentery-ravaged English, led by HRH Henry V, captured
the city of Harfleur.
Following a gruelling skirmish against the French and marching with wooden
stake in hand, they billeted at Maisoncelle.

English scouts reported thousands of 'fresh' French waiting astride the road ahead,
with many more due to arrive.
Hal ordered his army rest, eat, be silent and pray before rousing them to
action against overwhelming odds at Azincourt.
Then deciding to move his army forward to within bowshot of the French
line, Henry provoked them to charge.
The Retinue of archers deployed forward through woodland, flanking on both
sides the oncoming French cavalry.
Then goodly Sir Thomas Erpingham, throwing up his baton shouted -
"Now strike!"
and the English archers
loosed.
Best wishes to you,
Sir Thomas Erpingham (Andrew)

West Lothian Archers’
2D Shoot
25th August 2024
Pics & report provided by Linda Sutherland.
A fantastic 2D shoot! The weather was kind until 1.30pm - then the wind
and rain started, but that didn't dampen the spirit of archers today…
the banter and laughter was heard all through the course.
Thank you to all who attended. Special thanks to our catering team -
the menu choice was delicious.
13
There were some very high scores today, congratulations to you all.
Also, a special mention to Hawkeye Targets for the wonderful animal faces.

I have family in Niagara on the lake in
Canada and while I was there I was invited
to shoot at the Sportsmens Club in Galt -
https://galtsportsmensclub.com/
. They are
a part of the Ontario Archery Association.
The club boasts outside targets at a wide variety of distances
for practice and a fantastic shooting stand alongside a 22 x 3D
course in a woodland in which I shot 2 rounds. The second time
round I shot with a Canadian gentleman by the name of Bob -
what a nice guy!

I shoot freestyle and with a hard case I found it was easy
to get through customs with my bow.
I’d like to thank Karen of The
Sportsmens Club for sorting out
my guest pass. Karen also, very
kindly, gave me a club patch and
in
return
I
gave
her
a
50th
Anniversary NFAS patch which was
well received.
It was a real
privilege to shoot
in another country
so my thanks,
again, to everyone
at The Galt

was 41 Years old on 8 August 2023.
th
Can’t believe it…
41
years (but I’m still only 21)!
Really busy again at the moment, so for lessons, or arrow matching,
please book in advance.
Of course, I’m still doing mail order for those who know what they need.
And if you don’t, do book a time to visit and get lots of advice and a cuppa!
ARROW MATCHING
It really isn’t possible to sort your arrows over the phone or by email…
so do book yourself an arrow matching session at my workshop.
One thing though… PLEASE, do
NOT
buy a bow that is too heavy for you…
or you
will
injure yourself and arrow matching is just not possible.
I have arrows in 1/4, 9/32, 5/16 and 11.32” with most point weights, made up
for you to try.
Book yourself a session and see the difference it makes to your shooting skills.
Arrow matching £40 per bow.
Or book an hour’s help with your shooting.
£55
Or £85 for two souls
And Carols Tri-Jig
will help you make
your own arrows
really easily!
I also make leather ‘stuff’, including quivers and armguards,
pouches and belts, plus handbags and shoulder bags.
Plus traditional crossbows by my Mick (for NFAS members only) .

Sunday 1st September was the first (and definitely won’t be the last) of
our “Instinctive” Open shoots. Despite being restricted to “traditional”
styles only, 111 archers turned up for the event,
including a strong contingent from the rapidly-
growing “thumb draw” category.
They shot 36 targets on our newly laid “hunting
style” course and the feedback that we received was
unanimously positive, with many favourable comments
regarding shot length, target placement and shooting
stance. A frequent comment was how nice it was not
to be shooting “stretched” shots. Our tower shot was
definitely a favourite!
The second catering position in the centre of the course was well
appreciated and always busy.

As proof of the popularity of the course, at least one competing
archer has subsequently asked to join DFA – we must be doing
something right!
The shoot progressed smoothly and quickly, with the first group
finishing at 13:30.
As always, thanks go to our small, dedicated and hard-working
course laying team; to Jane, Derek, DC & Marian for the catering;
and to all of the club members who freely gave
of their time to help with car parking and
marshalling - Without you the day could not have
happened.
We look forward to welcoming all
competitors back next year!

Surrey University Shoot
at Company of 60.
Company of 60’s University Guests...
On the 5th October we welcomed the University of Surrey’s Archery department
(the Team Surrey Archery Club) to come to Company of 60 and have a go at
3D archery. Being used to target archery and knowing the distances, it came as a
bit of a shock to be thrust into the woods shooting at foam 3D animals from
varying distances, from different pegs and different standing/kneeling positions.
After a few shots they all seemed to start getting
the hang of it and suddenly the smiles started. Once
they got confident enough, the banter started flowing
and the competition really picked up.
They were split into two groups of 4 with Andy -
Club Secretary - and Emma, our Events Officer,
taking one group around; and Steve - our
Membership Secretary - and David, our Head Coach,
taking the second group.
39
We broke for lunch (platters of sandwiches and wraps,
and chocolate donuts provided by our club) with hot
drinks on tap.
Everyone was trying to find out everyone else’s
scores as we had told them that we were
going to be giving medals to the top three scores.
They all picked up on the scoring quickly and
checked with us a few times that they had got it
correct.
All in all it was a great day and they all
thoroughly enjoyed shooting a different style
of archery; and they hope to come back again
in the future, which we would welcome.
It was an honour just being able to allow one
40
the top university archery clubs to come and try out field archery on
our newly - laid courses and to shoot
around with them.
We would definitely recommend reaching
out
to
local
universities/
youth
archery clubs to come and shoot at
your grounds as it’s lovely to give
back and let people try new archery
experiences.

CO60 Membership Secretary.

This year's
Dunbrody Archers
100 3D Championships have to be the best
100 to-date and you did the late Martin Moylan very proud.
Outside of all the very hard work of dragging all those targets out onto
the course and cutting and strimming the lanes. There were little touches
that I liked, like Martin's memorial bench and
Andrew Wayland
's collection
of photos of the Club
members down through
the years.
43
The water and sun cream stations dotted
around the course came in handy with the
brilliant weather that ye had arranged for
us as well
.
There were archers from every corner of Ireland
and archers from Germany
- (my good friend
Holger Wischhusen
, his
beautiful wife
Elke
, and their friend), as well as France
and Hungary
who had come for the competition.
We thank each and every club member who made this fantastic
competition possible. A big thank you to my shooting buddies for
the weekend - Deirdre, Victoria and me auld nemesis
Mick Seery
for making the whole experience better, if that was at all possible.

The Bowyer’s Diary
“Boo, Yew Ipe Flight Bow
Part 2 - AKA
Some you Lose, Some You Win
”
by Derek Hutchison (AKA “Del the Cat”).
I was tillering the boo/Yew Ipe flight bow and the tiller looked wrong - closer
inspection revealed the Ipe belly had started to chrysal! It is supposed to be
very strong in compression, so why? Three possible reasons…
1. The grain runs diagonally at the failure point.
2. I’d simply made the belly lamination too thin.
3. The Yew core under that point was weak due to a splice there.
Oh, well, I’ve put it to one side... I may replace some of the belly and core
sometime.
I had another failure of a 35# Yew primitive that I’d made for a club member.
I suspect it may have been from some Yew which had been lying on the
ground for a while before being picked up and that the sapwood may have
been compromised, as I had another failure from the same timber (and yet
they were both fairly low stressed bows).
