STAFAA 2019 Indoor Flint Championship Sunday 27th November 2019 Location:- Oatridge Campus, Ecclesmachan, Broxburn 112

Question: What made this a fantastic shoot? The Answer: all of the archers who attended; the members who worked hard in setting up the hall, cooking delicious food and serving, administration, pasting faces and taking photos of the event! You all know who you are… the STAFAA would like to thank each and everyone of you. Fantastic shooting today with 11 new records set too!! Thank you to Jim Greig for capturing these fantastic photos. One man and his course! ~ Barry Cheadle’s Autumn shoot ~ After the previous two days of almost continuous rain, to my great relief, October 27th was a glorious autumn day for the Bower Hill Archery shoot. Competitors from Black Country Archers, Briar Rose, Centaura, Frankley Bowmen, Paget de Vesey, Robin Hood, Severn Valley Yeomen Foresters, Worcester Woodland Archers and quite a few independent archers shot the 30 x 3D course over mixed woodland and fields. As always, the course was completely changed from the last shoot, even down to the direction of travel. This turned out to be my busiest shoot yet, and I learnt a great deal from it. I already have improvements planned for the next one! I was determined to publicise this shoot more, and the first bookings from previous competitors came in literally seconds after the initial Facebook post, which I took to be a very good sign! Ben Lister, one of the Hunting Tackle competitors, very kindly produced a template for a score sheet (which was much more professional than my homemade effort), together with some excellent flyers which I distributed at the SVYF shoot on the previous Sunday. 114

I must also thank Rob Jones for his very timely help in organising the car parking when I was busy with the entries. After all the work of designing and laying the course, one of the things which I really look forward to is the walk around the course during the shoot when I chat to archers and find out their thoughts on how the shoot can be improved, which brought in some excellent ideas. Throughout the day, I could hear the occasional cheer and frequent hoots of laughter, which I took to be a very good sign! Competitors from Black Country Archers, Briar Rose, Centaura, Frankley Bowmen, Paget de Vesey, Robin Hood, Severn Valley Yeomen Foresters, Worcester Woodland Archers and quite a few independent archers shot the 30 x 3D course over mixed As always, the course was completely changed from the last shoot, even down to the I was determined to publicise this shoot more, and the first bookings from previous competitors came in literally seconds after the initial Facebook post, which I took to be There was quite a tussle in the Gents Longbow class! There was also a good turnout from Briar Rose archers!! 115

Pictured below is a photograph of part of the resident fallow deer herd. The last point of the safety briefing is always that if you see a deer target that doesn't have pink tape on it, don't shoot because it's probably a real one! 116

Pentref Bowmen Winter Masters 2019 - 2020 The first shoot of the season was held on a bright and clear day. This was in sharp contrast to the days leading up to the shoot with torrential rain causing flooding in many areas of the country and new rivers appearing on Pentref’s course. Unfortunately World Rugby had not contacted Pentref to ensure that our dates did not clash and so in a land of rugby fanatics we did suffer a drop in the numbers attending the shoot. However for those less interested in our second national religion, a good day was had by all, albeit a little more than damp underfoot. The muddy conditions did not stop those attending from enjoying a Big Game round of 14 x 2 targets with a mix of 7 paper faces and 7 x 3Ds. A mix of both long and short shoots at all targets kept our archers entertained ( I believe that’s what they shouted at the course layers). Although the club is fortunate to have a large area in which to lay courses it was decided to keep the course as compact as possible to ensure that all the entrants could complete the course in relative comfort and safety given the conditions. 118

Pentref is as most will know predominantly a GNAS field club having run some of the biggest tournaments in the GNAS / World Archery calendar, however in the dim and distant past it was also a very good NFAS club with archers travelling to shoots across the UK. It has recently rejoined the NFAS fraternity and is using the Winter Masters to introduce and in some cases reintroduce its members back into NFAS style shooting. Judging by a number of the comments made The first shoot of the season was held on a bright and clear day. This was in sharp contrast to the days leading up to the shoot with torrential rain causing after the shoot this is a positive process. The club has its own insurance for club shoots so are able to accept entries flooding in many areas of the country and new rivers appearing on Pentref’s course. Unfortunately World Rugby had not contacted Pentref to ensure that our dates from archers from all organisations to this multidisciplinary fun shoot. did not clash and so in a land of rugby fanatics we did suffer a drop in the Pentref Bowmen look forward to welcoming any new or returning archers at the rest of the winter seasons competitions, a warm welcome awaits. ~ Dave Jones ~ Did you know that if you would like to show your appreciation and support for FAN UK and what Hels is doing (and to enable her to keep the magazine free for everyone) you can DONATE? You may or may not know that \"Field Archery News UK\" online magazine is researched, edited and produced by just one person whose aim has always been and still is to bring field archery in all its forms (alongside other forms of archery) and all associations & societies together in one place to celebrate, promote and share our wonderful sport with archers, clubs and enthusiasts across the UK and worldwide. Although the club is fortunate to have a large area in which to lay courses it was decided :-) Any sum to keep the magazine going would be greatly appreciated - thank you to keep the course as compact as possible to To Donate via PayPal just visit https://www.paypal.me/FANUKHels OR select the \"Donate with a card\" option (which does NOT go via PayPal once the Donate course in relative comfort and safety given the with a card option is selected) at https://www.paypal.com/donate/… 119

Purbeck Archers’ Jurassic Shoot 13th October 2019 By Kenn Duffield, Chairman. Well the day of the shoot finally arrived. Many weeks of course-laying and set-dressing were about to be put to the test. The dreaded weather forecast proved accurate with wind and driving rain showers; it was horrid first thing. We had a few cancellations on the day, but most people were able to get us a message to say they wouldn’t be making it which helped a lot with the re-jig of the starting groups. 82 archers made it in the end. The keen ones started arriving from 08:30 onwards, installing themselves in the cafeteria. A few brave people even utilised the practice range but only between the rain showers. Welcome and introduction started at 09:50 and walkout groups were on their way by 10:00. I managed to breathe sigh of relief; now all we had to do was hope they liked the course. Target List (in case you need your memory jogged): West Loop - 01 Piglet, 02 Black Cock, 03 Wolverine, 04 Baboon, 05 Croc, 06 Preying Lion, 07 Cheetah, 08 Sitting Puma, 09 Turkey, 10 Standing Deer, 11 Skunk, 12 Large Owl, 13 Climbing Lynx, 14 Velociraptor, 15 Hadrosaur, 16 Dimetrodon, 17 Stegosaurus, 18 Wasps, 19 Spider. East Loop - 20 Small Bedded Deer, 21 Raven, 22 Wildebeast, 23 Beaver, 24 Large Bedded Deer, 25 Lynx, 26 Climbing Wild Cat, 27 Partridge, 28 Stalking Lion, 29 Bat, 30 Polar Bear , 31 Small Tortoise, 32 Warthog, 33 Wolf held at bay, 34 Little Bear, 35 Large Tortoise, 36 Boar. After I sounded the horn to start I made my way out to Target 33 (Wolf held at bay). This was always going to be the most confusing and trickiest shots on the course with 3 arrows, 3 pegs and 3 animals to aim at. The side-wind and rain did nothing to help matters either. Once the first few groups went through I decided coffee was calling. 122

We had a good turnout of marshals and helpers on the day and the inspirational cry of the lesser spotted Ginge ‘JUST PULL BACK AND LET GO!’ could be heard echoing across the valleys. All the archers seemed happy and complimentary out on the course despite the weather so that by the time it stopped raining and the sun came laying and out at 14:00 they could barely contain their joy at being out in the wood lobbing bits of wood, ally and carbon- few cancellations on the day, but most people were able to get us a message to fibre about. The first group finished about 14:30 with the last pootling in at 15:30. Now it was time for the Admin team to kick it up a gear. Mary, Steve and Charlotte collected cards and got down to the tricky process of sorting out the top 3 places, M & F, cafeteria. A few brave people even utilised the practice range but only between in 11 bow classes. Rather them than me. I had the raffle to do and as usual the PA members had been amazingly generous with their many prizes. So many things were on their way by 10:00. I managed to breathe sigh of relief; now all we had to drink, eat and hide away for the next raffle. I think it may well have been the fastest raffle ever with a constant flow of people between their seats and the prize table. Mary stuck her head round the door, ‘Scores are all done’ she mouthed across the room. Perfect timing. Kicking everyone back out in the afternoon sun for the medal presentation I got the results sheets from Mary and as I hoarsely shouted out the results, Charlotte handed out the medals. Only one more chore left to do! It’s a dirty job but someone has to accept the handshakes and compliments on behalf of everyone that helped. It is a wonderful feeling putting something on like this and getting so much positive feedback from so many people. THANK YOU. SEE YOU IN 2020. 123

£9.99 The Sherwood Archer bookmark – Robin Hood is here to keep your page and inspire your archery endeavors, the book mark fits in your book flat and the archer is thus over the spine. The archer is 4 cm high, the piece is wholly made of very fine English Pewter with a high level of finish, making the Sherwood Archer bookmark a worthy gift for any toxophilite. Ballads about the Robin Hood legends date back to the 15th century, although no ballads have come down to us from the first allusions to him they share many common features- the English poem Piers Plowman, thought to have been composed in the 1370’s is perhaps over a century late for a historically real person and even older versions in the late 13th- century French ‘pastourelles‘ put the ‘figure’ of Robin prior to 1280. https://www.shirearchery.co.uk/shop/archery-gifts/archery-gift-ware/sherwood-archer-bookmark/ £12.99 The Archer Mouse is approximately 3 inches tall, he is a cheeky little chap grasping his bow and standing to attention; dressed in a long dagged tunic with his feet poking out, a feather in his cap, at his back a quiver with arrows, and a hunting horn at his belt. We have been granted a limited quantity of these unique Archer Mouse ornaments. They are hand crafted to a very high standard, hand cast in a resin composite and stained to look like wood, which produces an incredibly accurate copy of the original with all the fine detail of the carving by Nick Hunter. https://www.shirearchery.co.uk/shop/archery-gifts/archery-gift-ware/archer-mouse/ £29.99 Real ox horn tankard made of premium quality cow horn with a polished finish, each tankard is hand made and is as original as the horn that it is made from. Every ox horn tankard has a sealed wooden base so that they are suitable for use with cool liquids (never use hot liquids); perfect a sunny afternoons Ale on campaign. These drinking vessels will certainly create a stir down at your local! As seen on Game of Thrones, Vikings and countless historical and fantasy movies. Each polished horn tankard is unique. They are approximately 7+ inches tall. Holds approximately 1.5 pints+. https://www.shirearchery.co.uk/shop/archery-gifts/archery-gift-ware/polished-horn-tankard/ 132

Many seasonal greetings to fellow archers everywhere. Due to shoulder injuries I’ve been out of it for a year and am glad to say that now able to draw the precious longbow again. A memorial shoot was held for two original members of the Medieval Society and I attended this, not expecting to be able to draw properly but hurray, drew but managed but hit little. Seems to be okay now and practised last Wednesday for the first time. A lit- tle stiff but back on the circuit now so another 10,000 arrows to get back to where I was. Archery has always been a part of my life and increasingly so as age has ravaged me. Taking it up again after being ill for a very long time and during that year it helped with walking and the therapy of being in touch with nature, with the added advantage of the companionship found amongst the fraternity of archers. This companionship I hope to renew, foster and expand during the coming year because this is not just a period of Christmas, the New Year is a time of promise and hope for the future. My resolu- tions will be carefully considered to improve everything during this coming year. The future is so precious, but we as archers of course are carrying on a great historical tradition with many fine qualities that we must, if we are wise, uphold so the future must be a goal of improvement and development given the example from the past we can draw on. Good luck with your shooting this coming year and do enjoy the companionship and fun that this wonderful art of ours holds. Kindest regards O Howard (OH Boyd) 1 134 32
