Overton Black Arrows: Overton Black Arrows: Overton Black Arrows: 2019 Watership Down 2019 Watership Down 2019 Watership Down Open Field Tournament Open Field Tournament Open Field Tournament Wow! What an incredible weekend it was for the 2019 Watership Down Open & Hampshire Championships. We had a fantastic turn out with 64 people competing on Saturday 13th July and 65 Sunday 14th July with archers joining us from all over the UK. Rather pleased to say we didn’t have the sweltering heat of last year with more pleasant temperatures and only the odd spot of rain. Fortunately, there was plenty of bacon sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs to keep everyone going thanks to Jason and Inner Circle Catering. Last year saw the introduction of the “Peter Turner Challenge”. This year we continued that on one of the tricky 55m uphill shots, as the “Peter Turner uphill challenge”, the competition was fierce but we awarded certificates to two recurve archers - Jonathon Shales and Chris Baigent for scoring 15 points and to Jeff Williams with an amazing Barebow score of 13 points. 102

We are incredibly lucky at Overton Black Arrows to have access to the Warren which is widely regarded to be amongst the most challenging field archery courses in the country; although this year the course we laid out was easier than previous years! The woods were available this year, which was a wonderful variation from last year, giving some interesting shots and a bit of shade. Again we had a variety of archers and styles competing, archers ranging from U12 right up to some of our regulars who have been shooting this course for over 25 years. Our Lord Paramount again this year was William Hastings, 17th Earl of Huntingdon, who gave a short speech and presented the competition medals, Hampshire Championship awards and the awards for the Peter Turner Challenge. I am delighted to say that during the weekend we had claims for 8 UK records, 7 Hampshire County Records and 12 Arrowhead Awards. A massive thank you to the Overton Team for making the event such a great success, especially to our Chairman Steve Allam, who played a large part in the organisation of this event. Here to tell you about his Here to tell you about his Here to tell you about his new book, FAN UK would new book, FAN UK would new book, FAN UK would like you to meet like you to meet like you to meet ~ Dan Høj ~ ~ Dan Høj ~ ~ Dan Høj ~ Hi Dan & welcome to FAN UK! Thank you for sharing your new book release with our readers - over to you!! 40 years ago, I joined the Stone Age group at the archaeological reconstruction Centre “Hjerl Hede” in Denmark. Here I met the archaeological technician Harm Paulsen, who made me a bow. This piqued my interest in the bows and arrows of the past, a passion which has been with me ever since. Today I’m part of “ULL – Ribe Vikinge Langbue Laug” (www.ull-ribe.dk from “Ribe Vikinge center”), where we are 70 archers/bowyers who make our own gear. With this we go to Viking markets in Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Norway. In 1999 I wrote a Danish book about the bows & arrows from the bronze and stone ages in Denmark. In 1995 I then wrote a book about the bows & arrows of the Vikings, and this book has now been translated. It contains 224 pages, 250 drawings and 60 pictures. The book starts with the written sources (Norse Mythology, Sagas and Heroic Legends), Contemporary Illustrations and Archaeological finds. After this I write about Nordic Bow woods and the nature of wood before “I start making bows, arrows and bowstrings”. The book - “Bows & Arrows of the Vikings” - also contains examples of bow measurements; but please note that a bow never can be made according to a template, since the properties of each individual piece of wood will make it different from any other. Additionally, the bow must be adapted to the individual archer with regard to the length and weight of its draw. Still, it will be useful to the novice builder to become acquainted with drawings and measurements of functional bows in regular use. Note that none of the bows depicted are completely symmetrical since adjustments have been made according to irregularities, knots and weaknesses. There is – as far as I know – not another English book, which focuses only on the bows and arrows of the Vikings. Since I put a poster on my Facebook page and asked my Facebook friends to share it, it has already been shared 250 times on Facebook so the interest has been far bigger 108

th 7 JULY 2019 DELAMERE FIELD ARCHERS OPEN SHOOT REPORT The day dawned bright and clear - a perfect day for a shoot but here again, when isn’t it a good day for a shoot? 97 archers (some new & some old faces) gave us lots of positive feedback (challenging but fun) which was lovely to hear. Derek masterminded the catering and Pat Belfield provided the delicious cakes which kept everyone happy. Many thanks go to the Delamere members who made the shoot run smoothly. good day for a shoot? 97 archers (some new & some old faces) gave us lots of positive

Castle Bowmen Sunday 21 July 2019 st “Some humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch, PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.” ― Terry Pratchett Okay, so we didn’t exactly put a large “do not touch” switch in the course, but we are still exploring and pushing our new woodland to see exactly what we can do! For our second shoot at Castledyke we decided to upgrade the flying fish and have a levitating bear, a pheasant was mounted to a gate post and a bison chewing on grass in a semi-dried up watering hole. During the lunch stop we pushed to make more changes to the course than we had previously done, this time managing to alter or completely change over half the course. The hope is that one day we’ll be able to give you a completely different course on the second loop! Most importantly (I think you’ll all agree), we had full catering available and a crack team preparing all the food largely out of sight for the hungry attendees. It seemed that the day went rather well - the weather was good, the archers appeared to be enjoying themselves and we got lots of positive feedback! If people are liking what we do then we’ll continue to push on and try to give you something special each and every time you come! Hope to see you on the 15th of September!
