Deer Park Archers WA3D Tournament & World Champs Qualification shoot th On Saturday 8 June Deer Park Archers held their first WA3D Tournament at their home ground, in Shurdington near Cheltenham. As a qualifying selection event for the World Championships later this year in Canada, the event welcomed archers from across the mainland. After a very wet week the weather gods were kind and held back the rain clouds delivering overcast sky’s at the start of the event. The course provided a variety of challenging shots spread across woodland, open ground with a mix of elevations and shade within a very compact area compared with other shoots on the calendar. Saturday morning saw the archers shoot mainly in the shelter of the woodland passing over woodchip covered trails, with carved steps, a trickling brook spanned by bridges, tree archways and the light flickering through the leaves (credit to Michaela Lake for that description). Saturday afternoon was shot on open ground and grassland exposing the archers to windy conditions and several longer distance targets. One of the armadillo targets became disliked by many archers as they struggled to score high on this mid-range shot on a flat but exposed area of the course; so much so that at the following week’s High Weald event, Jason Meehan had still not got over it as he could be heard crying “ARMADILLO” from across the practice range! Sunday saw the sun shine and the temperatures rise for almost perfect shooting conditions through-out the day. Archers were confronted with challenging up and downward elevations, dead ground and several shaded targets across the woodland and open ground areas of the course. At the end of the weekend there was much learnt by the Deer Park team through experience and feedback from the archers. This was a varied course that challenged many of the best WA field archers from around the UK. The following quotes, taken from Facebook posts after the event, provide an insight to the thoughts of many of the archers that competed over the weekend:- “… thanks to all the guys at Deer Park one of the toughest courses of the year for sure and a glimpse into the precision at distance that will be needed for the World Champs.” Spencer Martin (#psenation #goldtip) – Compound Unlimited Winner 6

“Huge thank you to Deer Park Archers for putting on a great shoot this weekend. Good variation from wooded inclines to flat grassland. It wasn’t an easy course which I loved!” Allison Kelly – Instinctive Winner “Thank you Deer Park Archers for a great weekend of 3d archery. The weather was kind, the targets challenging and my group was good fun, what more could you ask for?” Victoria Williams – Barebow Winner Deer Park Archers would like to thank everyone that attend the event and made it successful and enjoyable weekend’s shoot. Special thanks to all the helpers over the weekend, without whom it would be impossible to hold the event. Thank you the World Championships later this year in Canada, the event welcomed archers also to Roger Crang for capturing and sharing his wonderful pictures of the weekend! held back the rain clouds delivering overcast sky’s at the start of the event. Wolfshead Archers NFAS shoot th ~ Sunday 9 June 2019 ~ Thank you to the 76 archers who joined us for our June 2019 open shoot. Once again we were fortunate with the weather, managing to find the one dry and reasonably bright day amongst more than a week of rain. Except for an embarrassing lack of performance from the air horn when starting the shoot (made a note to test it first next time), everything ran reasonably smoothly throughout the day. Everyone appeared to enjoy the competition, with several of the classes being very closely fought. Our continued investment in new targets and additional course improvements was also favourably received. Thanks to all the club members who worked so hard to get the course prepared and whose efforts as marshals and in the kitchen were a vital contribution to a successful day for the club and - hopefully - an enjoyable one for our guests. We look forward to welcoming you our next shoot on the st 1 September 2019 where you'll be able to experience shooting a variety of woodland and moorland targets in the beautiful surroundings of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. 20

Hels/Field Archery News UK recently met with Mike Loades from his Californian home for an exclusive interview about his new book, “War Bows” - and his life’s work. Here is a taste of this incredible book... Okay, so you may know Mike Loades in one or several of his many guises - for me the order is passionate historian and documentary maker first, followed by horse-archer, author and action/fight choreographer, then featured expert & military historian on television and online, historical weapons expert, TV Director, Writer and finally, consultant to the video games industry. When I happened upon the announcement of his latest book, “War Bows”, I bravely (or stupidly and quite cheekily some might say!) took it upon myself to contact him and ask if he would have some time to communicate regarding his new publication… now you are always told by your ‘favourite grown-ups’ as a child to be careful what you wish for and my word, they had a point! Not only did Mike and I converse for a few months via email and written communications, within this he offered me his extremely rare and precious down-time to Skype with him from his home office in the USA to meet properly and have a natter! I cannot explain to you my jubilation (and terror!) at this generous proposition and after a month or so more of interruptions and life getting in the way, we finally met. The reason I mention this now is two-fold: firstly, that experience is mirrored generously in the pages of his book and secondly, I shall be sharing this exclusive interview in the next issue of FAN UK (October/November 2019). So, back to the book!! As Mary Poppins says in the classic film: “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”... that was my very first thought when my hard copy of “War Bows” arrived and even from the image of the cover above and the image to the right, you can surely see what I mean ?! 26

I am sure many of you may raise an eyebrow here - surely the creator/editor of an online-only magazine cannot be speaking so lovingly about an “actual” book??!!! Well yes dear readers, I am!! Hels/Field Archery News UK recently met with I LOVE a proper book, but “War Bows” is far more than that. Not only is it a stunning piece of Mike Loades from his Californian home for an writing but it’s appearance, feel and majesty ‘in person’, before you’ve even read a word of it is simply breathtaking. You feel you have a proper piece of history in your hands, then weighing down on your lap as you open it up [yes, I love books] :-) Whether you are an archer, an historian, an engineer or just nosing through someone’s home library, this is a book for everyone. Long story short, the book covers 4 main War Bow Types:- Longbow, Crossbow, Composite Bow and the Japanese Yumi and author and action/fight choreographer, then featured within these categories you are taken through development, use expert & military historian on television and online, and impact of these beautiful pieces of weaponry; but more than this, the depth of research sprawls out and visits bow construction and design, modifications and evolution throughout the ages and across the globe, incorporating stunning imagery ’extras’ that are effortlessly interwoven with Mike’s unique blend of enthusiasm, knowledge, love, respect and joy - the very language, personality and liveliness that I was lucky enough to experience ‘in person’ during our interview. Bow and arrow building, materials (wood types, shafts, word, they had a point! Not only did Mike and I converse for a few months via fletchings), terminology in context, application of uses, the place of archery in armies and infantry, armour, posture for drawing these beasts, horse-archery, thumb-rings, chariots, bow set-up, tuning, stringing and maintenance are all covered in amongst a detailed fold: firstly, that and illustrated journey through time and across the world. Archer or not, this book is undeniably for you! Nowhere else will you find such an in-depth history of the war bow across cultures, civilisations, battles, time and present. A true treasure. A few snippets from “War Bows” are dotted around this review but you really must see for yourself and to purchase a copy (and to learn more about this incredible man and his work), just visit http://www.mikeloades.com/ . 27

All British Open Field Championships 2019 Hosted by Lough Cuan Bowmen, the 52nd All British and Open Field Championships incorporating the UK Junior Field Championships took place over the weekend of 25th and 26th May at Mount Stewart, National Trust Estate near Newtownards, Co. Down. The host club were pleased to welcome over 130 archers from all areas of the UK, Ireland and France. All bow styles and age groups were well represented with all the archers competing over marked and un-marked courses in 2 separate woods. Each wood had its own challenges and the organisers had made full use of the terrain available to them when locating the bosses and shooting pegs. Use was made of gradients, cross slopes, light and open areas to give a variety of shots. All the hard work was done by the capable and dedicated club volunteers who gave whatever time they could to ensure that everything was completed to standard, some even giving up the opportunity to compete to ensure that everything went as planned. On the Saturday morning, the competitors were given a warm welcome by the Lough Cuan Bowmen Chair, Michael Ferguson and from Lady Rose Lauritzen of Mount Stewart, whose family home it was they had the pleasure of being at. Chair of Judges, Tony Tideswell then reminded the archers of the rules and safety procedures ahead of the competition getting underway. Over the next 2 days of close competition positions in the standings changed in each class with archers shooting their best in an attempt to take home the prestigious title of British Champion. The event went off without any issues with one Judge, Ashley Russell-Cowan commenting that it was “a stress free 2 days” . Lara was also able to claim NI Junior records along with COB member Jack Doherty. On completion of the second day the prizes were presented to the successful archers by GB gold medal winning Olympian and NI sporting icon, Lady Mary Peters. Following the presentation of the individual awards, the Home Nations trophy was presented to the Welsh team by Lady Rose. Special mention must be given to Simon Price of RSM Archers 32

who took home the Senior Gents Compound Barebow title for the 10th time. The hosts have received plenty of positive and constructive feedback on the courses and praise for organisation and hosting of the event with City of Belfast archer, Mike Henry, commenting: “The setting was beautiful, the weather kind and the camaraderie unparalleled in participant sport. The organisation and flawless execution are true testament to the team spirit that exists at the club” . French International archer, David Jackson, agreed with this by saying: “Thanks to Lough Cuan Bowmen for the weekend and all the hard work put into it. Everything went smoothly” . Black Arrow FAC th 30 June 2019 Results & shoot report A spell of heavy rain during the few weeks before our shoot had left our wood quite wet in many places, this meant we had to make a few last minute changes to get some shots out of the water, but luckily as it had been dry and sunny for a few days and we had a mini-heat wave on the Saturday, the paths and seating areas dried up very well in time for the day. A big thank you to the 109 archers who attended, we were fortunate that it turned out to be a dry and pleasantly warm day with sunny intervals. We had set out 40 targets, a mix of 3Ds and hand painted hessian faces which had been beautifully painted by 2 of our very talented members; our visitors were quick to comment on the paintings - many said they were much too nice to shoot... so much so that some even missed them completely!?!! We had a couple of novelty shots which seemed to be very popular, we were hearing lots of laughter and banter all around the course. The catering was well received and almost all of the cake was eaten. Thank you all the archers for your lovely comments, both at the event and on social media, it is much appreciated. th Our next open shoot is on 15 September and will be a pre-NFAS champs, all paper faces. Bookings are coming in already. ~ Cherrie Peabody ~ 38

Overton Black Arrows’ 24 hour Sponsored Charity shoot st On the 21 June, Overton Black Arrows held a marathon shoot in aid of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight air ambulance. Over the course of 24 hours, 36 club members aged between 9 and 80 shot a total of 256 “Frostbite\" rounds. Temperatures dropped to 9 degrees overnight which didn’t stop the shooting. The best score for a recurve archer was shot at 2am! Others huddled around the fire pit, fuelled by tea/coffee and huge quantities of cake. The club aim was to reach a cumulative total of 20,000 points... this target was reached after only seven hours; and the final total was 59,545 points. The event has raised an amazing figure which, at time of writing this, is over £2300 with a few more donations yet to come in. A Frostbite round consists of 36 arrows shot at 30m, with a maximum score of 360 points. During the evening, Craig Ballantine - shooting compound - scored a near-perfect 358. Jodie Buckner (U15), shooting recurve shot an amazing 334 at 2am. Mark Davies took the Longbow high score of 190; Bill Jones, shooting barebow, 44

scored 305 and Dave Giddings scored 89 with his horsebow. To put into perspective the effort involved, every arrow shot involves pulling the bowstring back, which ‘weighs’ anywhere between 18–60lbs depending on the bow; holding that weight whilst aiming, then releasing. One archer using a 30lb longbow shot 22 frostbites (792 arrows) over the 24 hours, which adds up to over 10 tonnes! Taking an average bow weight, this means the club pulled a total of around 125 tonnes! You can let me know in a variety of ways, by letting me have your Club Name and a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ regarding Dogs and ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ regarding Crossbows at your shoots. You can contact me in the following ways:- 1. Email me at [email protected] 2. Contact me via the FAN UK website as a site member via Wix Engage message at http://fieldarcherynewsuk.wixsite.com/fanuk 3. Send me a Private Message via the FAN UK Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/FieldArcheryNewsUK/ I am compiling an ongoing updated list in future issues of “Field Archery News UK” magazine and on the website. Thank you to those clubs who have already let me know and thank you in advance (and fingers crossed for more responses) to other clubs!! ☺ Hels 49

Oakwood Bowmen Del & Annie Newman HT Trophy Shoot th Sunday 16 June 2019 Many thanks to all our members and guests for attending on the day. We were blessed with good weather on what was Father’s Day for some. We couldn't think of a better day for “Pops Newman” to present the trophies. Annie Newman was unable to attend and so Del presented her trophy on her behalf. A cheque of £1030 was presented to Mark Oakes for “The Brendan Oakes Trust\" - this money was raised by guests and members at th our charity shoot on May 19 2019. A fantastic amount and the most ever raised at Oakwood Bowmen!! Well done all of you very generous people. Finally, a huge well done to all of the winners on the day! ~ By Mel Horne ~ 50
