Organization Briefs Music & Performing Arts Update The music and performing arts program has been single-focussed on the TERI Players production of Celebrating Who We Are which is highlighted on the “Q3 - Event High- lights” page. We did however want to share here a delightful video. CLICK HERE to see AJ, one of our TERI musicians, on a “HAPI” drum. Agriculture Update (with CAAE) Meredith Martineau Assistant Director, CAAE As part of our urban farms initiative, TERI’s agriculture program wanted to expand their chicken flock to provide more organic eggs for TERI group homes. In order to keep things organic, any new chicks have to be 1-day-old so they can be started on certified organic feed. However due to a recent outbreak of the Newcastle virus, it was no longer possible to get 1-day-old chicks from other sources; thus a decision was made to incubate and hatch our own. This turned out to be a very educational experience for everyone. We incubated 30 eggs resulting in 9 new baby chicks. Our first hatch is now five weeks old and in their own coop at TERI’s equestrian site. The second hatch is less than a week old, and at the farm. The breeds are Americana, Wyandotte, and Rhode Island Reds. We now have a total of 37 chickens which are cared for, fed, and watered by TERI clients. We have three chickens located at our Marshall House, four at the equestrian site, and 30 at our Montgomery farm. This incubating project was a great success in many ways as it also brought other TERI clients out to the farm so they could experience, learn, and see the process of hatching baby chicks. Everyone loves and enjoys the new chicks. CLICK HERE to see a short video of our new chicks . Natalie Hill Equestrian Update Director of Therapeutic TERI has several new horses that have been added to our Equestrian Program. John Henry is a 16-year-old Percheron who joined our therapy herd in July. Equestrian Services Standing at 16.3 hands high (or 65.2 inches), he is now the tallest horse at TERI. He has started taking TERI students for trail rides and is building up his stamina and experience in the arena. He is also extremely social and enjoys flapping his lips at any horse or human that walks by. Another addition is Wynona, or “Winnie” for short. Winnie is a 14-year-old Pinto quarter horse who is enjoying some down time before starting to work with our students. She will complete her training soon and step into her role as one of our trusted therapy horses. CLICK HERE to meet Winnie. Equestrian also recently partnered with TERI’s livestock program to raise four newborn chicks. Once grown, they will become part of TERI’s certified organic egg program. 4

Justin Hellenkamp CLIENT SPOTLIGHT TERI’s commitment to support our adults and students Justin now engaged and happier as his life has transformed. empowers them to ‘live their best life everyday.’ That begins with assessing and identifying  barriers and behaviors that challenge an individual to reach that goal. Whether that progress is meteoric or slow and steady, we are proud to be part of their journey to success. Justin’s is just such a journey. Justin came to TERI’s Learning Academy with significant behavioral challenges. At the height of his behaviors he spent up to 90% of his day screaming and repeatedly slapping himself in the face. Justin also liked to bundle himself in multiple jackets, to the point where most people didn’t even know what he looked like. He often kept his hands tucked in his sleeves, drastically limiting the things he was able to do. Because his behaviors were such a disturbance to other students, Justin spent most of the day alone in a classroom with his instructional assistant. In January 2019, Justin’s team at TERI rolled out a systematic behavior plan based on the principles of ABA. Things started to change. At first the plan focused on teaching Justin something simple: to pass an object to another person without screaming or engaging in self-injury. In a matter of weeks he got it, and was appropriately doing school work and able to attend group activities. Then more layers peeled back. The “hood” came down. Now, Justin is a happy, energetic student that skips through the building singing silly songs. His life has changed. He’s rejoined his peers and enjoys days full of outings, music groups, and science experiments. His self-injurious behaviors have been significantly reduced to one instance every few months, which typically consists of him rubbing his cheeks. The best part of Justin’s positive behavioral change is that everyone is getting to know what a wonderful person he is. We are so proud of Justin and can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next! 6

Ruby Gala Getting Ready for 10-10-2020 The excitement at TERI is building as we have begun actively planning our celebration of 40 years of changing lives, and as we look forward to a very promising future for our Campus of Life. Our 40th Anniversary is being represented graphically by a bold ruby gemstone, which is said to glow crimson due to its eternal inner flame. No other stone could better encapsulate TERI’s legacy. It embodies our lasting commitment to provide not only services to our clients and students with special needs, but to also co-create a more fulfilling, meaningful life for each individual along with their families, and with inclusion in our communities. The 40th Anniversary Ruby Gala, which is scheduled for October 10, 2020, is set to commemorate the outstanding achievements of the last 40 years of success by our courageous, trailblazing founder, Cheryl Kilmer. Additionally, we will celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments our TERI clients and their families have made, honor our Champion Donors for their years of generosity, and provide an opportunity for new champions to donate to the completion of the the world-class Campus of Life. A peek preview of some exciting things we anticipate are: a special TERI video and a commemorative book telling the TERI story that includes 40 fabulous recipes. Be on the lookout for upcoming communications as we head into 2020 and our year of celebration! 8
