2018/19MEMBERSHIP

WELCOME TO OPPIDANOppidan Education was set up by Henry and Walter in 2016 to offer a fresh approach to one-on-one support through the concept of mentoring. Self-worth, confidence and adaptabilityform the core objectives behind an ethos that goes beyond the confines of exam preparation. This philosophy is reflected through Oppidan Camps, our summer camps for prep-schoolaged children that prepare them for life both inside and outside the classroom. We believe wholeheartedly in the role of a mentor in a child’s development. Ourphilosophy, both within the scope of mentoring and our summer camps, continues tofocus on the soft skills associated with self-worth, confidence and perspective, whichtogether help children engage with the challenges ahead of them. Having people whomake it their business to nurture children and keep them grounded is of huge value inan increasingly uncertain world for the younger generation. It’s been wonderful to see the positive reaction from so many of you and we hugelyappreciate your support as we develop a fresh approach within the education sector. As we expand our mentoring reach both at home and overseas, we owe it to you thatthese last two years have been an enormous pleasure and we very much look forwardto continuing our work together.HENRY FABER & WALTER KERR Directors of Oppidan Education O2

Oppidan Education has a completely fresh approach to otherplayers in the market. They ‘mentor the individual’ rather than ‘tutor the child’ which brings much more than just the exam results. I can’t recommend them highly enough. ANYA HINDMARCH MBE OUR MISSION HENRY FABER Our narrative is clear: if children are able to invest in the idea of learning, Founder & Director there is no limit as to what they can achieve. Oppidan Education was set up in 2016 with a clear purpose in mind: to change the expectation amongst children as to the value of one-on-one teaching.O3

FELICITY McDONALD TILLY ST AUBYNMarketing & Events Manager Client Manager WALTER KERR Founder & Director

Thank you very much to Oppidan Camps for the brilliant guidance and support you have shown Ed and us over the past year. You have significantly enhanced him as a candidate whatever the end result. He is not over-prepared or over-tutored but simply more confident in himself. He now talks freely to adults about his interests and ideas where before he might have shied away from conversation. Ed also counts his mentor as a good friend, which is a testament to you and your approach. MOTHER OF ED, YEAR-6 STUDENTO5

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW? What training do your mentors have? All our mentors are enhanced DBS checked. We also ask that our mentors undergo safeguard training with EduCare, alongside our own regular in-house workshops at Oppidan’s office. How do we choose a mentor for your child? The tidal wave of tutors in London has made tutors seeminglyhomogenous in the profiles sent to parents. As a result, mentors are chosen on personality, interests and shared common ground with your child, as well as their relative experience with that age group. Where do the lessons take place? In most circumstances, the mentor will come to your home for the lesson. However, lessons can also take place in our office. We have even had, from time to time, a History lesson in the Churchill War Rooms or a Geography lesson on The Thames. Lessons also take place online over Skype to families more remotely placed.

What happens if I don’t like the mentor offered to mychild? The first lesson with a new mentor should be seen as a trial sessionto see whether your child is happy. If the match does not initiallyprove successful, we are happy to find a more suitable replacementand refund you for the lesson. Will the mentor provide reports and feedback? Yes – communication with you the parent is a huge part of a mentor’s role and constructive feedback is given after each lesson. Monthly reports are also written, which come attached to your invoice at the beginning of the month. Will the mentors provide teaching resources?Lessons should very much be guided by what the student wouldlike to cover and it would be worth going through the brief beforethe lesson to ensure that the mentor can prepare accordingly withthe resources Oppidan offers.
