LITERATURE: THE MIRROR OF THE SOCIETY “Great literature has to be created in each of the vernaculars. These literatures must voice the past, translate the present and forecast the future”. These words of Sister Nivedita directly and in obvious as well as in unambiguous terms point to the literatures each nation of the world must produce. Undoubtedly, literature being the mirror of the society, its structure and the various advancements it witnesses with accordance to the needs and necessities of various times, has always had a profound impact on the lives of the people of a nation’s society. Literature at once reflects, delineates and articulates the various changes which occur in society from time to time and thus plays an integral and inescapable role in a country’s development and the preservation of its culture and tradition. Literature undoubtedly being varied and of everlasting and perennial charm, forms an invaluable part of a country’s legacy, which is of immeasurable greatness. Literature, thus proves to be a scintillating and unparalleled medium for the expression of the various changes and distinct features the society naturally becomes part of in due course of time and it, incomparably and wondrously, provides the people of the society a deep and wonderful insight into the revolutionary and dramatic changes which the society they live in, undergoes and thus facilitates an accomplished and a better comprehension of the challenging circumstances of their time and enables them to collectively strive towards the development of the society. It also makes them aware of and draws their attention to the various needs and requirements of the society of their time. In addition to providing knowledge of the period underwent by the society, it also succinctly and remarkably explains and points out the various unbeneficial and unsustainable malpractices rampant in the society of the day and helps in understanding the characteristics of an era of the society in the past, and containing the whole history of the nation, it alone provides the country the respectful status it has in the world as a whole and it would be no exaggeration to say that, it alone retains the country’s greatness for posterity and makes it what it is. It also throws light on the conflicts, controversial, discriminative and unjust customs which pollute the society which might prove to be a glorious society’s pitiful Achilles Heel and if it has not happened so far in our society, it is because of literature, which thereby saves society from the dishonour and disgrace of being remembered as a society dominated by caste taboos and superstitious practices and thus prevents history from creating an adversely evil impression on the society during its past, thus thwarting the future generations from looking on down their country’s heritage with a sense of disdain and mockery, which may destroy the country’s reputation as a one with a glorious history due to the 56 | P a g e S O L A C E

meritorious deeds achieved by the great men it has produced and might completely ruin and adversely affect the country’s future growth as the citizens of its future, may feel extremely cynical of their country’s heritage. Literature thus plays a pivotal role in transforming posterity’s outlook into a positive one and thus glorifying the country’s history. Our country has produced brilliant literary figures including Kalidasa, Magha, Vishnu Sharma, Bhatrahari, Bhavabhuti and Narayan Pandit in Sanskrit literature, Thiruvalluvar, Ilango Adigal, as well as Rabindranath Tagore even in the most recent of times, who are renowned all around the world making our country proud and enabling her to hold her head high among nations of the world. Perils of Pestilence -Meher Shahid The streets deserted, Terror looms in the air. A world ravaged by disease, All its flaws laid bare. Children and adults confined To the four walls of their homes. Tired, scared, anxious, Restless and alone. Safety, joy and harmony Replaced by peril, dread and strife. A spectre hanging over every head, Hacking away at our fragile lives. Questions form in every mind Too many to discern. What does the future hold? Are we past the point of no return? Things may seem bleak and daunting With a virus at your door. But we must stand strong with steadfast hearts, For the sun will shine once more. Humankind has conquered Every hurdle in its way. This too shall pass, Hold your ground, come what may. 59 | P a g e S O L A C E

And as the sun rises above the horizon, From the ashes, a phoenix shall rise. And its fiery wings of faith and science Shall heal the world as it flies. 60 | P a g e S O L A C E

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA: A COLOSSAL PHENOMENON WHOSE TEACHINGS REVIVED INDIA’S REMARKABLE SPIRITUAL HERITAGE “Education is the manifestation, of perfection already in man” “Work, work, work. Let this be your motto.” Speaking on religion, Vivekananda said - “A religion which cannot wipe the tears from the eyes of the widow and provide bread for the starving is no religion.” According to him, unselfishness is the test of religion, which is beautifully and succinctly visible from this quote: “Are you unselfish? That is the question. If you are, you are perfect without reading a single religious book.” On abandoning anything that makes us feel weak of body, psyche and intellect, he says: “Anything that makes you weak physically, intellectually and spiritually, reject it as poison, there is no life in it, it cannot be true. Truth is strengthening, truth is purity, truth is all-knowledge. Truth must be rejuvenating, must be enlightening, must be invigorating.” Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863 - 4 July 1902) can aptly be called “crown of all spiritual teachers our race has ever produced”. Vivekananda was the consummation of all incomparable spiritual heritage which had their origin in the Indian soil for more than thousand years. Swamiji’s teachings dealt with the upholding of the wondrous and unparalleled ideals as well as a sense of pride and dignity on being Heir- apparents to the ultimate of all human and worldly endeavours- the Lord Almighty Himself, in the reality of whose Existence, inquiry began in our Motherland for the first time in the whole world, in preaching unto mankind the potential divinity of His soul, realisation of the nature of the Self, revival of India’s marvelous heritage and tradition, service of humankind and the elevation and emancipation of India’s thousands of ignorant and down-trodden masses, going under and under day-by-day, the incommensurable greatness and grandeur of religion and the nature of God as well as the essential unity of all religions. Swamiji himself 61 | P a g e S O L A C E

averred that the nature of God is so overwhelmingly resplendent, that it is ineffable and beyond all human limitations of speech, reason and description. Given below are some of his invaluable and inspiring utterances: “Arise, awake, wake up yourselves, and awaken others. Achieve the consummation of human life before you pass off- Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached.” “Thou brave one, be bold, take courage, be proud that thou art an Indian, and proudly proclaim: ‘I am an Indian, every Indian is my brother.’ Thou too, clad with but a rag round thy loins, proudly proclaim at the top of thy voice: “The Indian is my brother, the Indian is my life, India’s gods and goddesses are my God. India’s society is the cradle of my infancy, pleasure garden of my youth, the sacred heaven, the Varanasi of my old age\". Say brother,”The soil of India is my highest heaven, the good of India is my good…” “Have faith that you are all, my brave lads, born to do great things! Let not the barks of puppies frighten you- no, not even the thunderbolts of heaven- but stand up and work!” “Never mind the struggles, the mistakes. Failures, these little backslidings; hold the ideal a thousand times and if you fail a thousand times, make the attempt once more.” “Come up, O lions, and shake of the delusion that you are sheep; you are souls immortal, spirits free, blest and eternal.” “Strength is life, weakness is death. Strength is felicity, life eternal, immortal; weakness is constant strain and misery, weakness is death.” “Obedience, readiness, and love for the cause- if you have these three, nothing can hold you back. 62 | P a g e S O L A C E

“It would be found that it was misery that taught more than happiness, it was poverty that taught more than wealth, it was blows that brought out the inner fire than praise.” “Each work has to pass through these stages- ridicule, opposition, and then acceptance. Each man who thinks ahead of his time is sure to be misunderstood.” “Great enterprise, boundless courage, tremendous energy, and above all, perfect obedience- these are the only traits that lead to individual and national regeneration.” “Fill the brain, with high thoughts, highest ideals, place them day and night before you, and out of that, will come great work.” “Death is better than a vegetating ignorant life; it is better to die on the battlefield than to live a life of defeat.” “We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded, and by which one can stand on one’s own feet.” “So long as the millions die in hunger and ignorance, I hold every man a traitor who, having been educated at his expense, pays not the least heed to them.” “Purity, patience and perseverance are the three essentials to success, and above all love. TO MY COMPATRIOTS Gird your loins, lion- hearted one, twid not your thumb in futile thought, And spend not your days in vain, for it will bring you naught. Wander not listlessly ever, or wallow in the valley of despair, As this awful indifference, can only build castles in the air. Be ever active in the pursuit of your aim, feel not dull or dreary. Forget not the grossest crime is to sit idle, so propel forward your destiny, And that the unforgivable sin in this battle, is agony. Know that it is the greatest plague that impedes, and yield not then to affliction. And, so with a heart steadfast and faith unquenching, pass the labyrinthine test, Hearken, O courageous heart! So move forward with unabated zest. So, progress, victorious one! Knowing travails to be transient, And remember that success caresses him with resolve unflinching and heart valiant. 67 | P a g e S O L A C E

And that it forsakes him, once and forever, who dares not try to win, So off with this ghastly malady, it is the deadliest sin. Never be ye dubious, for it tramples you down to accept defeat, Doubt not as to cross the shore, for it squashes you and takes your victorious seat! Alas, fie on you! For you meekly surrendered and knew not how the problem to tame, You are worthy of condemnation and of the severest disdain, you befit to die of ignominy and shame. Submit not to the will of the tyrant, cold and menacing, Be ye virile, never to yield and success will unquestionably be yours- sweet and caressing. Love the race, which has nourished you, and find this while in tireless service as the time passes, sacred service of the masses. * The poet mentioned in the poem refers to Sarojini Naidu (1879- 1949), the Nightingale of India. DANGERS OF DEFORESTATION Our planet provides us with many leads like food, water, shelter etc but. Deforestation is one of the biggest threat of our planet. Deforestation occurs when plant life or vegetation is destroyed by mankind or natural reasons like fire, floods or earthquakes etc. Deforestation can lead to many problems like desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops etc . The best example of the dangers of deforestation are the 2018 Kerala floods . Many places in Kerala were affected by floods and soil erosion etc because there were no tree`s to give the soil grip . I even have a personal experience on the dangers of deforestation in our village there was a hilly plantation the owner of the plantation destroyed the hills. After the incident the nearby areas experienced water shortage So it is important that we cut less trees and plant more trees than we cut, engage in campaign and protests to make people understand the importance of our planet and environment and make them aware of the dangers of deforestation . Because if we don’t save our planet then who will????? 72 | P a g e S O L A C E

-Daniel Williams; IX B There are some so called facts that we think to be true since our childhood; but interestingly they are actually not. 1. WHAT HAPPENED TO TITANIC? : We believe that Titanic sunk when she had a collision with an iceberg. Mr. Senan Molony, an Irish investigating journalist discovered that there was a minor fire in her boiler system when she left the port. Subsequently, the intensity of fire had weakened the structure. Collision happened when the structure was already weak, leading to rupture of hull, flooded and sunk. 2. ALBERT EINSTEIN: Many motivational speakers claim that Mr Albert Einstein had failed in Maths exam when in school. But the fact is that he had his Master’s degree in differential and integral calculus by the time he was 15 years old. ISAAC NEWTON: Similarly, as we have been told that when an apple hit Isaac Newton’s head it triggered him to think about gravitational force. But the fact is that this is just an illustration to explain gravitational pull of the earth. 76 | P a g e S O L A C E

3. COLUMBUS DISCOVERED AMERICA: We have been hearing that Columbus discovered America in 1492. This doesn’t mean that no human being existed there before this event. As per the researches, there is a record of existence of human race in the 11th century in America. 4. STONEHENGE: It is believed that the age of Stonehenge is about 5000 years. It is evident from the photos of the year 1844 that cyclone in 1800s have dislodged the stones. The Stonehenge what we see now were rearranged by the professors of Cambridge University in 1898 using huge cranes. 5. THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA: There is a talk in the city that the only structure that is visible from moon is the Great Wall of China. But the fact is that, even though the entire length of the wall is 21,196 km and width is 20 feet, a survey in 2012 reveals that 22% of its structure is already damaged. The talk of the wall seen from moon started in the late 17th century when there was no satellite nor any technology available then. Scientists explain this with an illustration of locating a hair strand lying 3 km far. 77 | P a g e S O L A C E

6. ‘SMOKING KILLS’: Until 1950s it was believed that smoking is good for health. In 1949, a cigarette brand, VICEROYS was marketed as best product recommended by the dentists. The brand LUCKY, in 1930s was marketed as the top brand to provide good voice. Because of this, 70 million population which was half of the entire US population became smokers. After 1950s, researchers proved that this is a serious health hazard. 7. INVENTION OF INCANDESCENT LAMP BULB: It is generally believed that the invention of incandescent filament lamp is attributed to Thomas Edison. But the fact is that, development of filament lamp started in 1800 by Alessandro Volta and many other scientists like Humphry Davy, Warren de la Rue, Joseph Swan, Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans also contributed. Joseph Swan managed to lit the element in a vacuum bulb. Finally, Thomas Edison and Joseph Swan jointly got the patent for the incandescent filament lamp. 78 | P a g e S O L A C E

THE MAGICAL FISH Once upon a time there lived a lazy young man named Jack. He wanted to become rich without any work. One day he got hungry and decided to go to the market to get some food. On his way he saw a fish stuck in some muddy water. When he got near the muddy puddle he heard the fish say please help me. Jack was shocked but later he got a grip and asked the fish - “What would you give me if I help you”. The fish said- “I am a magical fish ,if you help me I will grant any three of your wishes”. Jack didn’t believe this at first but he decided to help the fish anyway. When he delivered the fish to the pond he decided to test what the fish had said . He said for my first wish I wish that I get tasty food to eat . And in an instant his hands were filled with plates having tasty treats. He ate to his heart`s content and was in the mood for some fun. “I wish I could fly”. Seconds later he discovered that he could fly like an eagle . The Book Thief -Review by Meher Shahid The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is a historical fiction set during WWII in Nazi Germany. The protagonist is a 9 year old girl named Liesel Meminger. We meet Liesel as she is on her way to her new foster home. However, tragedy strikes as her little brother, Werner, dies on the train ride to Molching, where her foster parents live. As she and her mother are leaving Werner's hastily-prepared funeral, Liesel finds a book left by one of the gravediggers lying in the snow. She picks it up and takes it with her, which earns her the nickname 'The Book Thief' by the narrator. One of the most interesting things about this book is that it is narrated by Death, who has no regard for suspense and reveals what happens at the end of the book in the first 20 pages. When she arrives in Molching she is welcomed by Rosa and Hans Hubermann, her foster parents, but finds herself unable to adjust to her new surroundings, still grappling with the fact that her little brother is gone. But she quickly discovers that despite her harsh exterior, Rosa Hubermann deeply cares for her. Hans finds the book she took from the graveyard and offers to read it to her. He also teaches her to read and write. Over the years, Liesel reads several books, some are gifted to her, others she finds lost or abandoned. Each book teaches her an important life lesson and helps her mature as a person. From reading with the mayor's wife to befriending Max Vandenburg, the Jewish man who avoided persecution by hiding 91 | P a g e S O L A C E

in the Hubermanns' basement, Liesel learns to compassionate and kind. The book focuses heavily on the power of words. Learning to read with Hans established a close bond between Liesel and him. By reading to the people in the air-raid shelter, Liesel assumed the role Hans had once done for her, as someone who is able to provide comfort to those in pain. But as Max points out in the book he writes for Liesel, words can also be destructive when misused. This book is a window into the past. It shows us what it was like to grow up in a time of intense hatred and violence and reminds us how short and fragile human lives are, and that we should never take it for granted. Zusak does an incredible job of creating likeable characters that feel alive. The fact that the reader knows what is going to happen at the end of the book makes it an interesting read. Zusak succesfully creates a bittersweet story about love, hate and the power of words that is sure to leave the reader heartbroken yet satisfied. 92 | P a g e S O L A C E
