Synopsis The story begins on Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum house. Clara, and her brother, Fritz, sit outside the parlor speculating about what kind of present their Godfather, Drosselmeier, who is a clockmaker and inventor, has made for them. Godfather Drosselmeier presents Clara with a Nutcracker soldier. After being put to bed, Clara sneaks down to the parlor to find her beloved Nutcracker. In the parlor, the grandfather clock begins to chime, and Clara is horrified as mice begin to come out from beneath the floor boards, including the seven-head- ed Mouse King. The Nutcracker comes to life and with the help of Fritz’s toy soldiers they do battle with the mice and the Mouse King. Clara, seeing the Nutcracker is in danger of being injured, takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King, allowing the Nutcracker the chance to slay the Mouse King. The Nutcracker then takes Clara on a journey through a snowy forest arriving at the Kingdom of Sweets. The Kingdom is ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy who presents a celebration of sweets from around the world for Clara and the Nutcracker’s enjoyment. There is decadent Chocolate from Spain, Mandarin Tea from China, an exciting Trepak from Russia, rich Coffee from Arabia and the lovely and delicate Dew Drop Fairy. Finally, the Sugar Plum Fairy performs for Clara, the Nutcracker and all of her kingdom. When Clara awakes, she finds she is back in her home left to wonder if her exciting adventure was real or just a lovely holiday dream.
