The entire staff, led by the Digital Strategy Team, has been involved in this undertaking. This has beenan effort to make the site fresh and exciting and reflective of our world today, the needs of our fellowship, andthose who have yet to find our help and hope. Check it out!WSO Financial UpdateThe Finance Committee Update that is a part of the Chairperson of the Board letter was received recently.Unfortunately, the news as of June 30, could be better. The General Fund recorded a loss of $10,349 for thisperiod compared to a gain of $341,931 this same period last year. As you remember, I came back fromConference last year and told all of you the financial need at WSO and you responded. Because of thisresponse, we finished the year with a net gain. We are not on target to do that this year. So, what can we do?Whatever you did last year!! We need your contributions this year just as much. I know we can do ittogether! ALTERNATE DELEGATE’S REPORT, FALL AWSCHi There,I’m always grateful to spend some time with some of my very favorite people. If I haven’t met you, pleaseintroduce yourself. I try to explain to people outside Al-Anon that I haven’t met all my favorite people yet. Itdoesn’t go well.I want to thank each of you for your kindness in the last five months. It’s been a rough ride, and I couldn’thave done it without you. I’ve received stacks of sympathy cards and masses of calls and messages and I am sograteful for my people here in Al-Anon.The AA Convention in Prescott is coming up the first weekend of September. You’ll hear from the Al-AnonChair, Lore, later in the day. I also want to thank Linda C. who began the work and was unable to complete it.She did a fabulous job for my people here in Al-Anon. continued on page 3

Message Carrier Page 3continued from page 2I sent you an email two weeks ago outlining the suggested changes to the Area Guidelines. It seems neverending, doesn’t it? But the Guidelines are looking good. I want to refresh your memories of how theGuidelines Committee works. It’s made up of the past delegates and me. This time, Clem C updated the AAPPguidelines and Barb B. made some suggestions for the Alateen Coordinator guidelines. Any proposed changesare discussed in the Guidelines Committee meetings. The past delegates are brilliant at their task. This timearound we had the task of reviewing the Election guidelines, after the proposed changes were not approved byAssembly. Later you’ll have the opportunity to send these proposed changes to the Assembly- or not. It’simportant to remember that all we are deciding today is whether we think the proposed changes have enoughmerit to be decided at Assembly. On August 5, we had the Convention turnover meeting and now Sue H and Tanya J are looking to put togethera fine Convention for you next July. Sue will have a full report later. We had a great Convention in July at the Sheraton Crescent. I want to thank Gene and Garth and all thevolunteers - I’ve heard nearly 100 people took part in putting the convention together. I’ve posted theevaluations on the Alternate Delegate corner of our website, so I’m just going to give you a few highlights.First, thank you to all 143 members who took the time out to fill out an evaluation. You have a lot of goodideas, and we are listening. Last year many of you asked for larger meeting rooms and a nicer venue. TheConvention Committee delivered in spades. All aspects of the Convention were rated form 1 (poor) to 4 (excellent) and all ratings came in between 3 and 4.The most positive responses came from the choice of speakers- they were ranked at 3.85 out of 4. Membersreally enjoyed the additional room in the meeting space. They liked having choices in the program. Theyapplauded the food at the banquet. Protests included cold meeting rooms, a wait to get into the sleeping rooms,a shortage of microphones (which cost us $350. each) and shorter meeting times. All in all, people rated theirconvention experience at 3.66.The Area guidelines tell me that the Alternate Delegate, as part of the Convention Committee, “assures that Al-Anon’s Traditions and Concepts are adhered to at all times.” That would be easier if it weren’t possible tointerpret the Traditions and Concepts many ways. The Convention Chair’s responsibilities include determining“along with the Alternate Delegate, any appropriate expenses needed for the convention” That also would beeasier if the Chair and the Alternate Delegate always saw things the same way. One of the difficulties in talkingto each other and reasoning things out is that there is no clear guidance on the issue of Convention autonomy. When is the convention autonomous and when do convention committee decisions affect the Arizona Area as awhole? For example, mileage expenses and budget overages needed to be considered this year. There is notclear guidance on how to apply the Traditions and Concepts to more complex convention decisions. This year,I reached out to the Area Officers for guidance. Their perspectives helped clarify some complex situations.Perhaps there are some guidelines that could be put in place to reduce the stress on the Chair, the AlternateDelegate, and the Convention Committee. My conversation with our Area Chair made me aware of onepossibility. Substantive decisions might be better made by a committee composed of the Convention officersand the Alternate Delegate. I’m sure there are many other possibilities. I’m looking forward to how our processunfolds as we seek solutions to every challenge we face.As always, I welcome your questions and comments.Thank you so much for allowing me to be of service.Hugs, Claudia M, [email protected] BIG THANK YOU TO DISTRICT 5 FOR HOSTING THE FALL AWSC IN TOMBSTONE.

It was a wonderful opportunity forseasoned members, newcomers, and everone in between to participate in Service together. Besides that thecommittees that got together to create the event had so much fun and comradery. It was a little scary at first, since many of us had not hosted this type of event before, but somehow the exact right people, places and thingsmanifested to make it a success. We are pleased to announce that a new Alateen meeting began this summer. Once folks came back from summertravels, it has been very well attended averaging about 8-10 yound people each week. We hope that even morewill attend once the word gets out.Currently there are 23 active meetings in the District, including the Alateen group. Most groups have an activeGroup Rep, although there are still some without. My hope is that someone from each of these groups will stepinto that Service Position by the next time we meet.Ruth Davis, District 9 Representative

Message Carrier Page 5 Al-Anon Family Groups of Arizona – Treasurer’s Report AWSC - Saturday, August 19, 2017It’s budget time once again and we will be reviewing the 2018 Proposed Budget at the end of my report. I willbegin by reporting on our current financial position as of July 31, 2017.Checking Balance: $17,381Ample Reserve: $18,003Once again, A BIG THANK YOU to the Groups, Districts, and AIS’s for their generous monthly andquarterly donations so far this year. Your donations alone covered 100% of our expenses and afforded us theopportunity to increase our ample reserve to reflect our current needsThe balance in our general operating fund was over $17,765 at the beginning of May; our ample reservesavings account had a balance of $15,000. Our Guidelines suggest that we maintain an ample reserve ofapproximately 6 months expenses. Our expenses have averaged $35,719 per year based on a 3 year average. The Officers agreed that it would be prudent to increase our ample reserve to $18,000. At the end of May,$5,000 was transferred from our general account to our reserve savings account, increasing the balance to$18,000.Our year to date expenses appear to be tracking close to budget with the exception of a few; Supplies andOther Expenses. These two categories include the cost of the mass mailing Public Outreach initiated and fallswithin the $2,000 budget approved at the Spring Assembly. Mary will be sharing with you today, how PublicOutreach is using these funds.Attached is the 2018 Proposed Budget which I will ask you to carry to the Fall Assembly. Also attached is aspreadsheet with a few breakdowns and history of certain expenses. The budget projections were calculatedusing 31 months (2015, 2016 & 7 months 2017) except where the 2015 Election Assembly inflated theexpenses. A few categories were calculated using actual monthly expenses plus an estimated percentageincrease. You will notice that the budget shows a significant increase in Registration Income, Area Meetingsand Travel Expenses. This increase reflects the additional cost for our two day Election Assembly, to be heldFall 2018.Respectfully submitted,Paula W. - Arizona Area Treasurer EAST VALLEY LIAISON REPORTOffice Volunteers needed The East Valley Information Center is looking for creative ways to obtainvolunteers, specifically when the winter visitors are gone. Message Carrier Page 7 DISTRICT 7 REPORTRelocation: District 7 started the year by needing to relocate 4 groups from a meeting place at a Churchwhere some of the groups had been meeting for at least 10 years. The reason for the move was the same thatothers groups are or have experience; the requirement that we provide insurance. Due to the efforts andcommitment of group members a new location was found within 90 days. Three of the 4 groups eventuallyrelocated to another Church and the one group was able to reach an agreement and they stayed at the samelocation. Sometimes challenges are blessings in disguise. The new location is a more cheerful place, withcomfortable chairs and indoor bathrooms. The three groups are very happy with the new meeting rooms.Birthday Party/Christmas Party: The District members decided to combine our Christmas party with the65th Birthday of Al Anon. One of our members Betty was also celebrated for her over 50 years as a member. It was a special occasion and enjoyed by the over 50 members who attended.Spanish Group: will be celebrating their 7th anniversary on September 16th with their annual gathering wherethey have a speaker and shared delicious food brought by the members.Summer District Meetings: This is the second year that we change it up a little and GRs meet for breakfastto continue the discussion and sharing of the various groups. In September we will return to our monthlyevening meetings. These summer meetings allow for a more relaxed and unhurried meeting and it allow theGRs to get to know each other more.Out Reach: a special event took place in July when the Spanish group registered for a Community Eventwhere over 2000 persons attended. The Community Event is held annually for the families of childrenreturning to school The Spanish group gave out flyers and actually new members have joined the Spanishmeetings. Our Out Reach coordinator Terri suggested that we donate 2 books to the local public library in aneffect to provide some education on Al Anon. This has been approved by GRs and the 2 books are beingpurchased.July Convention: Members from District 7 traveled to Phoenix for the Convention. One of the memberswho attended the Conference was from the Spanish Group who was able to attend due to the generosity ofanother member from a group in Phoenix who donated the Conference packet she had won at our Springmeeting. The Spanish group member was so grateful for the opportunity to attend the State Conference.Romona Corrales UPCOMING EVENTS2017 Fall Assembly in Phoenix, AZ October 14, 2017 Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran ChurchHosted by District 15 1500 W. Message Carrier COORDINATOR & LIASION & DISTRICT REPORTS Page 8 ARCHIVE REPORT FALL AWSC AUGUST 19, 2017A big thank you to my assistants Pat H and Ann S for helping set up the Archive table at the 2017 Conventionin Phoenix. Its entire focus was on Alateen in honor of their 60th Birthday. I found the banner in storage thatwas used for Al-Anon's 60th Birthday and we hung that up on the wall behind the table. I ordered the DVDsLois's Story and Lois W & the Pioneers from WSO and they were available to show in the Hospitality Suite atthe Convention and had a real favorable response. Let me know if you would like to have them available atnext year's Convention. As always, if anyone has something you think belongs in Archives, please let meknow. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.Hugs and prayers, Sue H., NEWSLETTER COORDINATORThe deadline for this newsletter will be August 21, 2017. The reason I am setting these so early is that I canget it out sooner by doing this. If it is too late, it is all old information and then if there are motions, they willnot get to the Group Representative in time.Send all of your reports to [email protected] By doing this the report will go to all of the folks who needthem (including the interpreters) and you only need to send them once.If you have items that need to be in the UPCOMING EVENTS, please let me know ahead of time. That wayI can keep them showing the current events and save the rest for a later issue.Be sure to read the instructions on how to copy the issue for your groups. Only the one on line should becopied as it has no personal information and that way protects the anonymity of all involved.Hugs, Pat Holland, Newsletter [email protected] 2018 CONVENTION REPORT FOR AWSC, AUGUST 19, 2017 We haven't even had our first Planning Meeting and we have 17 Chairs and Co-Chairs, notcounting myself and my co-Chair. Message Carrier Page 11 CONVENTION REPORTI hope everyone enjoyed this years Convention!? Although I’m still in recovery, for me, convention is alwaysone of the best weekends of my year and I always look forward to the opportunity to attend.Mike S. asked me to list a few of the highlights of this years convention:• This was the first convention to be held in the metro Phoenix area in over 10 years. It was a greatopportunity for Phoenix residents to attend without incurring the cost of out of town travel.• The convention was held at one of the few facilities in the state capable of comfortably handling 500attendee's--this allowed us to hold more meetings and panel discussions.• We changed the convention date from early May to mid-July to take advantage of Phoenix hoteldiscounted rates. The hotel cost--$89.00 plus breakfast for 2—was a great value!• We opened the convention on Friday night with an Al-Anon speaker, which allowed us to add anadditional speakers meeting to the program. Speakers included 4 Al-Anon speakers (Friday night, SaturdaySpanish, Saturday night and the Sunday spiritual speaker), an AA speaker, and an Alateen speaker.• We had 25 meetings available over 3 days, plus 6 panel discussions/workshops, plus 10 Spanish meetings, plus 8 AA meetings, plus 8 Alateen meetings! My congratulations to the program committee which providedour members with options for every interest.• For the second year, we continued to attempt to have a chair and co-chair for every committee. I know Iwas very grateful for my co-chair (Gene T), and we think it benefited all of the committee’s that we able to fillthat position. The slogan that often ran thru my mind over the past 20 months was: \"We don't have to do italone.\"• For the second year, we had American Sign Language interpretation for the main speaker’s meetings.• For the first time (???) we offered babysitting during main speaker’s meetings.• This was the second most highly attended convention in the past decade!Including the 27 chairs, co-chairs & liaisons to the committee, over 100 people volunteered their time duringthe convention to assist with registration, fund raising, banquet, literature, etc. I am grateful for the efforts ofeach and every one of them. Planning and executing a convention is truly a team sport. On a personal note, I'd like to express my gratitude to the Area and to the assembly for taking a chance on meas Convention Chair. The people who asked me if I would be willing to serve saw in me something I didn'tsee in myself... For me, this journey started in December of 2015 when I was approached at a pancakebreakfast fundraiser. Over the past 20 months, I've learned a lot about myself as a leader, a lot aboutteamwork and I have had the honor and pleasure of working with and getting to really \"know\" peoplecommitted to putting their program into practice in all aspects of their lives. With much gratitude, Garth M. Message Carrier Page 13 AREA PUBLIC OUTREACH REPORT – AUG 19, 2017PUBLIC OUTREACH CORNER We now have a Public Outreach Corner on the area website. To access goto al-anon-az.org, then under MEMBERS to SERVICE CORNERS, and we are the last one listed. Here I willbe able to post past and current projects that you can access and pass onto your groups. We will alsohave an area for Thank you letter templates as suggested by WSO from The Best of Public Outreach. It isimportant to thank Harkins Theatres, independent theaters, and radio stations that may play/air ourPSA’S. They do this at no cost to us.I also want to encourage you to attend our monthly meetings. These are listed on the Area Website andare usually in the Tempe area. Members can also attend remotely on the internet via ZOOM. That way,you can participate while home on your computer with your pet on your lap.CURRENT PROJECTSPOSTCARD MAILING (2017)We have purchased a list of current licensed counselors in the State of Arizona. I believe the list hadsomewhere over 4200 names. We went through the list and got rid of the ones that did not apply. Wethen printed and mailed through VistaPrint 1000 oversize post cards in June. To get the entire fellowshipinvolved with Outreach, we have compiled individual packets for each district, with instructions, anexample of what the postcard looked like, suggested literature to send out and mailing labels ofcounselors that received the post card in this first printing. We will be doing another printing & mailingof 2000 different names from our purchased list at the end of September. At the next assembly, we willhave packets for each district, again specific to the names of counselors in their district that received the2nd mailing. Our hope is that the groups can follow up and contact the counselors with some literatureor other Al-Anon information. A big thank you to the fellowship for increasing our Outreach Budget thisyear to make this possible.RADIO STATION PSA OUTREACH (2017)We have acquired a list from the American Broadcasters Association that has 90+ radio stations listed inthe state of Arizona. We have divided them by zip code/district and have compiled another packet forthe DR’s to take back to their groups for an outreach project. We have included a direction sheet & asuggested script from the WSO website, along with the list of stations and contact names and numbers. We encourage the districts to get their groups involved by calling the station contact and ask that theyair our PSA. I have found that it costs nothing to ask. Then let go and let God. Our delegate, Barb Long, brought us a copy of the new radio PSAs from the conference: 15, 30 & 60 second radio PSA’s that I’dlike to play for you.MOVIE THEATERS PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT (2016-2017)The PSAs were shown successfully at the 6 Harkins locations over the holidays. We will be eligible toapply in February 2018 for 6 new locations and a different PSA. I would like to remind everyone that weare grateful for the opportunity to do this at no cost, and would encourage folks to send a letter ofthanks to Harkins. A form letter to customize is available online at the NEW Public Outreach Corner. Inconjunction with PSAs in theaters, we were able to have an independent theater in Sedona, The Mary D.Fisher Theater, agree to run our PSA that was shown over the holidays. They are currently running itbefore their movies and will continue throughout the Fall. We are in the process of reaching out to otherindependent theaters in the valley. We can use additional help from members in contacting theaters intheir cities/districts. Once the theater has an interest or agrees to show the PSA, contact Mary C. [email protected] & we’ll get you what you need from WSO to the contact you made. It’sall about networking and working together.
