Devotion Week 19: 13th June 2021 Theme: Draw near to God Hymn: Draw me close to you Draw me close to you, Never let me go I lay it all down again, To hear you say that I'm your friend You are my desire, No one else will do 'Cause nothing else can take your place To feel the warmth of your embrace Help me find the way, Bring me back to you You're all I want, You're all I've ever needed You're all I want, Help me know you are near https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdJBYyNsQd0 James 4: 8 (ESV) ‘Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.’ James calls us to draw near to God and he will draw near to you. How comforting it is to know that God always stands ready to accept us with open arms! He is always accessible and available to us. Throughout the Bible, we see God’s desire for fellowship. God wants a relationship with us. How can we draw near to God? Today, we’re so caught up with the speed of modern life. How often do we hear people saying, “I didn’t even manage to get half my things done today!” or “Oh dear, it’s the end of the month already! What happened? Where did my time go?” As a result, many of us are feeling either constantly stressed, deeply tired or a combination of both. But the biggest cost is the harm done to our relationship with one another and with God. To draw near to God requires us to draw away from the world. It is a call to deny self and find life in the one who gives life. We should do all we can to draw close to the Lord: • Issue of the Heart – a sincere desire to have fellowship with God. Coming to God requires directing our hearts towards God • Issue of Priority – willing to pay the price (time and effort) it takes to walk with God., that means saying no to certain things, taking the risk of displeasing people. James uses the term ‘doubleminded’ people trying to serve both self and God • Issue of sin – sin can cause a barrier in our relationship with God. Don’t let sin stop us from coming to God, whether that be pride, envy or whatever sin we’re holding onto. Come back to God in humble confession of our sins and receive his grace. ‘If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.’ 1 John 1:9 Reflect: • Do you desire an intimate relationship with God? Are you willing to put in the time and effort to spend time with God, speak to God and hear Him speak to you in His Word? • Which issue is your biggest struggle? Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for your promise that you will draw near to us if we draw near to you. O Lord, remove the many distractions of the world and increase our desire to know you better, in Jesus’ name we pray Amen. 7
