MCB 8 SummaryUnit 1 A Lantern as Big as a HouseThe festival of Vesak is celebrated with a lot of excitement in May in India andSoutheast Asia. People decorate their houses and make lanterns which are to belit on the first day of the festival. Patiya had seen beautiful lanterns in the city,when he had visited it the previous year with his grandmother. He wished tomake a similar lantern and hence worked very hard to make a large frameworkfor the lantern. The framework was completed just three days before the festivaland Patiya was very worried they would not be able to afford enough paper tocover the lantern, as it was almost as big as a house! His grandmother reassuredhim. She explained that they would sell the sweet potatoes they had beengrowing and with the money earned, they could buy all the paper needed.Patiya and his grandmother worked very hard to decorate the lantern with paperbefore the festival. She trimmed beautiful flowers and shapes and he kept pastingthem all on the lantern. When the lantern was finally done, they realised thatPatiya had sealed the last opening of the lantern and his grandmother could notcome out of the lantern. She again told him not to worry and lit the candles insidethe lantern. People could now see the outline of an aged woman meditatinginside the glowing lantern. Everyone praised their efforts and Patiya was contentthat he had succeeded in making a beautiful lantern.The story tells us about the love of a grandmother. She did not let Patiya losehope and helped him achieve his dream of building a lantern as big as a house.
