EDITORIAL“When I sit down to write something, I do not say to myself, ‘I am going to produce a workof art.’ I write it because there is some lie that I want to expose, some fact to which I want todraw attention, and my initial concern is to get a hearing.”—George OrwellIt has been a while, specifically 3 years, since the last number of our UNDERGROUND magazine from the Bachelor in English Degree Program at UNIMIUTO was published. Now it is time to retrace the steps and create a new number of this magazine. There are different reasons, pretexts or justifications to publish again this new work of art. TheBachelor in English Degree Program, for example, has grown astoundingly with more than500 hundred enrolled students who are mostly satisfied and engaged with their highereducation process at the university. Furthermore, during the last 3 years, the Bachelor DegreeProgram has been modified and consolidated to become a well-structured and a high qualityprogram nationally and internationally that offers its students the necessary tools to becomeoutstanding English educators and professionals. During the different subjects of this program, our students have developed andimproved their creative and analytical writing skills writing different kinds of texts takinginto account the contents and issues of each subject. Thus, this magazine has allowed themto make their different texts public to show the university community how much they havelearnt and as a way to express their opinions, points of view and emotions. For me, it is apleasure to make this UNDERGROUND number a reality and continue the process to keeppublishing more numbers of this work of art that was created by our students to our studentsand professors. Firstly, I want to thank the students who sent their writings to the edition team andmade this happen. Also I want to express gratitude to the edition team who worked very hardto review, edit and adapt each composition. Finally, I want to invite to the English BachelorDegree Program community to send us your articles and texts in order to start preparing ournext number. As for this fourth edition, the series of writings you will read are concernedwith creative writing, culture and leisure, educational research, pedagogy and didactics andtechnology.Sincerely,Sebastián Concha VargasDocente LIEI – LILEXUNIMINUTOSede PrincipalEl presente número fue diseñado de la página web https://www.flipsnack.com/ Copyright © 2018

Figure 1: Fairytale Town (2018)Fanciful was a marvelous place which was discovered by Valerie Nash, a curious girl who lived with her parents in Turaco, a small and fruitful town where people lived quietly. However, its inhabitants had a general rule for all the farmers. They had toshare their crops; this was a condition to maintain harmony in the village. So under anycircumstance, they could not fight for food. Valerie’s family had a big farm where huge onions, reddish tomatoes, corn, potatoes, cassava, and some fresh vegetables grew. Although this was the most productive farm of allin Turaco; they did not like to share their food because they received less food than what theyprovided to the other farmers. Besides they could not sell food in the town nor in anotherplace; it did not seem fair to them. Thenceforth, they thought it would be a good idea to find another place to live; sothey could sell their crops at good prices and then they would be able to save up money.Suddenly, one day Valerie’s parents decided that their girl could explore a new place to live;they were working hard many days, while she was looking for a remarkable place. The Turaco’s people really did not worry about the wellness of their neighbors; theyjust wanted the production of Valerie’s farm because it was the biggest and richest, and itwas the most annoying behavior for Valerie’s parents. Valerie was a girl of twelve years andTuraco’s people did not look for her; so her parents were working for her welfare; while shewas looking for a good place to live with them. Many years passed and her parents did nothear from her again; she did not come back to her village.
Valerie had lost her way to get home; but, the years passed and then she accidentallyfound a wonderful place. It was so magic that she could see fairies flying everywhere withtheir delicate wings. At the beginning, the goblins and the trolls did not sympathize with her.One of them said to her “you are too small to be traveling alone; surely you are a naughtygirl who does not obey your parents”. Valerie proved to be a wise girl because she helpedthem to cultivate their delicious fruits; so she got on well with the goblins and trolls. theybuilt up a strong friendship. She learned their language and customs. Valerie asked them ifher parents could come to Fanciful; but they did not like the idea; so they decided to tell herthe true story about what had happened before: Hundreds of years ago the fairies taught the humans how to take care of the earth; andhow to make the crops more productive giving them many secrets; at that time, the fairieswere the owners of the lands. Unfortunately, many humans wanted to take advantage of this;as some of them wanted to steal their valuable secret to learn to fly as birds. Thus, a group ofpeople did not agree that the fairies were controlling and deciding how the humans had tolive. People wanted to take to all them in prison to discover how the fairies flew; but thefairies would never tell their secret to anyone. As a result, many of them were wildly killed. Some horrified managed to escapewithout a place where they could live. So, they decided to ask the trolls and goblins, whowere their closest friends for help because they were respected with great affection. Therewas a problem and it was the humans; they were still chasing them. Humans could not yetknow how the fairies flew. However, fairies preferred to die before revealing this powerfulsecret. The fairies, though, were scared stiff. The oldest troll told them very worried: “I hearda ferocious human saying: “we should do many experiments with them; we just have to makethem confess their secret”. They had a great idea; so that humans would not look for themanymore. The ogres, the trolls, and the fairies prepared a magical potion which power was ifa human touched the magical liquid they would forget the fairies forever. The fairies flew so high and filled up the clouds with the beverage; so, when it rained, just adrop of water that touched them would make them definitely forget everything about thefairies. The fairies decided not to talk about that and forget the humans for good. Theyunderstood that humans always wanted to be superior; and they did not want to be governedby any other species. Besides the fairies thought that the humans needed more humility andtolerance. The trolls and the goblins were very happy with the fairies in peace and harmony. Valerie never imagined that she would have a nice friendship with those enchantingbeings; as they were fascinated with her. They understood that a human could also be goodwith a pure soul. Nevertheless, they answered to her that it was not the time yet to receiveother human beings. Yet, Valerie missed her parents very much; and she wanted to see themagain. Surprisingly, the fairies taught her how to fly. She rapidly improved her way of flyingbecause she thought she would go faster to see her parents; but nobody could see her flying.Swiftly, she came back to her town to see her parents; but, people told her that her parentshad died 22 years ago. She burst into tears; and many people were sorry for her.
Amazingly, the inhabitants could not believe that she was Valerie Nash; as she lookedlike 20 years older. Valerie was astonished and too sad about the death of her parents becauseshe thought could have shared more time with them. Unexpectedly, she had courage andthought now that her only family left would be the fairies; anyway she was given theprivileged power of flying. Finally, she decided to come back with her fantastic friends and the magic town ofFanciful where she had accomplished to be the dearest and most beloved human being by allthe magical beings who lived there. YS’ ISLAND: Adol’s ChroniclesThe Story Begins: Adol Cristi, is a red-haired young boy. Since he was a child, he startedtravelling around the world with his dad, when he was 14, he started his adventures on hisown. Two years has passed after he left his family and his land away. Sailing in a boat, in asmall boat through the Mediterranean Sea, he wanted to arrive to a new land to learn abouttheir cultures and more. Nevertheless, a big storm began making damages to his boat while the water shook fiercely. Few minutes later, an enormous wave raised his boat with him inside and threw them away. Adol fell into the water and suddenly he heard a voice when he was losing his conscience. The voice told Adol the world of YSFigure 1: The Dark Tower (2018) needed to be saved and that Adol had to defeat the demon Lords Azeroth in the(Deviant Art, 2018) Dark Tower, located in the center or YS. The tower was working as the nucleus of the Island, but it was changed by Azeroth with its devilmagic to create demons to form an army. Adol saw all these events in his dream and the voicethat told him the story was from a girl. After some time, Adol opened his eyes and realizedthat he was lying on a softly bed. He looked to the right and saw two women. The youngertold him that her name was Violet and she was the one that found Adol on the edge of theBeach, Adol thanked her for saving him. Rosalia introduced herself as Violet’s mother. Adolalso thanked Rosalia for her hospitality. Rosalia and Violet shared with Adol a goodfriendship, Adol helped them with housework and brought some food from the forest, sincehe had already experienced with hunting. Three months passed, and Adol, every night, remembered the voice which told him that YS was in Trouble. His wounds were completelyhealed, so he started to train in the forest with the equipment he had; the things saved fromthe boat that Violet also picked up. One of the main items Adol had, was his sword. Thiswasn’t only a weapon, but a gift from his father.Adol thanked Rosalia and Violet for evrything they did for him. In order to reach the centerof YS, Adol needed some information, so he left the town and went to the closer city. Inthere, during his questions to lots of people, one old man impressed him because he knewwhy Adol was doing when he hadn’t said a word. The old man, called Victor, gave Adol anecklace of Elements in which he could use any natural element to save his life and other’slives. He also told Adol that a terrible disaster was close, and it was a responsibility given tohim by the goddess of YS. Adol arrived to the Path of Death, a mysterious and dangerousforest, which many people told him such terrible stories. Covered by lots of trees Adolcouldn’t see the light of the sun even knowing it was midday. Suddenly one big noise was1
heard by him. Strangely, this sound was very familiar to Adol, so he immediately, ran overit. Using the necklace to generate “light” with its magic powers Adol saw the shadows of awoman and a fat and big monster. The monster looked like an ogre, but it was carrying abranch of a tree as a weapon to kill the woman.Adol reacted so fast and cut with his sword that branch, the monster couldn’t hit the woman.Taking another breath Adol cut the stomach of the ogre and lots of blood came up and, themonster fell off. Adol saved the girl and when he was going to help her. She said him in aloud voice to be careful. Adol looked behind and there were six or seven goblins thatappeared from the deep forest. Those goblins were going after them. Adol told the girl to bebehind him. The goblins wanted to kill them. On the other hand, Adol touched his necklaceand the light that accompanied him, turned into flames that surrounded his sword, coveringit with fire. Goblins couldn’t believe what their eyes saw. Such a powerful Magic wasimpossible and they stopped running. Adol shook with sword with such strength that cut thegoblins by its half. Even though the power was so strong that he even cut dozens of trees inthe way. Figure2: Sword of Fire (2018)Adol looked after the woman who was sat on the ground looking at him. The beautiful bluehaired woman that had the same color in her eyes. Those big eyes gave Adol no time to speak. She stood up and seriously looked at Adol and said that she was the woman who narrated allthe events while he was unconscious. He believed her, because the voice was the same andthe determination of her speech was perfect. She introduced herself as Dana. Adol reactedand knew that this girl had the name of one of the goddesses that YS has. So, he couldn’tdoubt it. She leaded Adol to the end of the forest. Where she told him that everything was atrial to see if he was the correct one. In that moment one man got out from a cottage close tothem. This man introduced himself as Ralph, one protector of the goddess Dana. Adol had totrain with Ralph if he wanted to take part of the war to save YS from Azeroth. Three weekswere spent in the forest by Adol to got stronger at killing monsters and demons. With thehelp of the goddess and the power of elements given by his necklace. He felt suddenlypowerful enough. So Adol, Ralph and Dana decided to arrive to the Dark Tower. This towerwas large and its length reached the heaven’s clouds. Terrible magic and demons could befelt even from the distance of a kilometer. They attacked the first flood and succeeded killingmore than hundreds of monsters and demons. The power of the goddess was amazing. Ralphused his fists as the fighter he was. So he could even break walls and metal with just one fist.Adol used the power of the elements in his sword and he could cut anything in front of him. 2
But it was very difficult and because Ralph and Adol were humans they got tired. In the topof the Tower, Azeroth were watching with his magic how these three persons killed his army.Azeroth became angry and thirsty for blood. He killed two of his protectors to calm downand invoked two dark ogres and ordered them to kill these people. Dana felt the danger, because these ogres weren’t as the one Adol killed before. These ogres charged dark and evilmagic inside. So she warned Raplh and Adol about this. Their training of killing monstersand demons gave results. Adol knew exactly that the enormous power of magic was difficultto manage and more for ogres with no conscious. Adol absorbed dark magic with his swordand jumped up. Then, he used and reflected the dark magic of the ogres and ripped off theirheads. Azeroth couldn’t believe this and decided to invoke the strongest dark magic, in whichhe could defeat the goddess and could create his invincible army. Adol had to climb nowabout 100 floors filled with monsters to get with Azeroth and defeated him.Author: Author Jesus David Páez. Figure 1: Love & Politics (2016)It was 6 am; a whole country called Colombia woke up to elect their next \"sovereign\". Those celebrities were a very selected and privileged group. They were people who simulated their honorability; and Colombians were going to choose one of them with thehope to finish their society’s suffering and inequalities.Mary and Juan lived in in the suburbs of the capital. That day, they were preparing to go outto vote for their favorite candidates; but it was not a pleasant day because Mary and Juanwere arguing. The situation was very tense because they had different opinions in relation totheir favorite candidates.Juan's candidate was a young man with a great rhetoric, objective proposals and moderatetone; in other words, he was the best option for him. On the other hand, Mary's candidate wasa \"leftist\" ruler who had clashed with the country's most conservative political class; and hehad won the reputation for challenging the status and questioning authority. His objectivewas focused in education; but he was feared by some people.Mary was a bad temper woman with her husband because he was going to vote for “a badcandidate”. According to Mary’s opinion, she denied accepting that her husband's thoughtswere different. For that reason, she repeatedly insulted him on the street; he kept in silence. At the moment that they arrived at the place where they had to vote, Maria told Juan that hehad the last moment to change his mind; if he did not choose her favorite candidate, theywere going to have some problems at home. Juan told her \"you and I are family; and youhave to let me decide for my candidate; it does not mean that you will have problems withme “. Mary angrily shouted him \" I hate you\" and she left him alone in that place. Then shewent to the room where she had to vote.
When she arrived to vote, she found two people who were arguing for their politicaldifferences; they were insulting each other with rudeness. In that moment she began to reflectabout how stupid they looked when they discussed for political issues. She said in her mind \"each one is responsible and free to make their own decisions and I haveto respect it; each person is free to decide who is going to be their candidate. But it is notnecessary to insult other people for that reason\" she understood that her husband was free tochoose the person that he wanted. When Maria voted, she went to meet with their husband to ask for forgiveness for her foolishattitude; but when she arrived at the meeting point, he was not here. She was very worried; and she run to her house. When she arrived, she found a postthat said \" I love you and my ideals will not change my love for you\". Her husband showedup; and he told her, “do you understand now?”. She said sorry many times; and she told him\"yes I have understood that each person is different, and they think in different ways for thatreason I want you to forgive me”. THE BIG SCARE Figure 1: Scary Figure 1: Scary (2018)I do not expect you to believe the horror story I am about to write. I would be mad to expect you tobelieve it. Even my reason tells me it is difficult to believe, but I know that I am not dreaming, so this ismy story. When I was a child, I liked to scare people because it was very fun. I scared my sister and my brothertoo. I remember that one day I made a mask that it was a great idea in that time. One day I put on themask and I walked towards my sister who was cleaning the house. I scared her, but she turned around, put her hands in my shoulders and then fell down. She didn´t say anything; she just took my hand andsqueezed it. I didn’t know what to do? So I took the phone and called our aunt. I don’t know how myaunt arrived in such a short time. She noticed that my sister was blue and she inserted one of her fingersin my sister’s mouth and hit strongly her back and suddenly she threw up a ring. After that day, I decidedto never scare someone again. Some weeks later, I was walking through a small town when I felt that someone was following me. Ididn’t know what happened, but after that I had to sleep in my sister’s or my mom’s room because I wasterrified. One day, I decided to sleep alone again in my bedroom. That night I felt that a person got intomy room, so I put the blankets over my face and I didn’t want to see if somebody was there. Then, I wascold, so I removed the blankets and suddenly in front of me there was the shadow of a tall man. He haddark eyes and a mysterious look. Immediately, my body got frozen and I couldn’t shout. He said: ‘I wantto kill you’ and the only thing that I wanted to know was if I was dead or alive. Suddenly he came up onme and I felt that I didn’t have my feet in this land. In that moment, I just imagined God was there and Icalled him aloud. When I did that the man turned into flames and left. During one month he showed upagain and wanted to hurt me, but when he got closer, I prayed and he disappeared. Luckily, he didn’t hurtme. I never knew who he was, and I didn’t know why this happened to me. I think that maybe that wasa lesson for me because scaring people is not a game. 1

Review Stephenie Meyer is a young writer and her books are interesting, amazing, and entertaining. Every story has a great plot that makes people, especially the young, to get hooked on the book because Meyer's style is very descriptive and uses dialogues which allow readers to imagine in detail the characters and places where the story unfolds. In addition, we consider that Stephenie is a good example of life because thanks to her, we learned that no matter the obstacles or challenges we have to face, it is important to be persistent and patient, so we could achieve our dreams and goals. 1

My name is Esteban Nicolás Cortés Segura. I have lived in Casa Blanca for 17 years. It islocated in Kennedy. I live with my father, my mother, my younger brother and my olderbrother; I have only 2 friends there, I met them in a course of Taekwondo that we didtogether a lot of years ago. Getting back to the main topic, my neighborhood is composed by blocks of flats. There are a lot of parking areas for cars and motorbikes. Additionally, there are differentkinds of shops like small markets where you can buy any kind of fruits, vegetables, groceries, art craft materials, liquor, and fast food and a cyber café. There is also a bakery, a park, achurch and a lot of green areas where people can have their garden and take care of manytrees which are around the buildings. Finally, there is a garbage dump. In relation to the people, as everything in life, you can find friendly and rude peoplebut, in general, most of my neighbors are good and hard-working persons. 1
My neighborhood, like all the ones of this city, has positive and negative qualities.Regarding the positive aspects I can mention the green zones, the good people, the goodservices and business possibilities. On the other hand and making reference to the negativeaspects I can list the rude people, the permanent dispute between my neighbors, the poorinterest about the care of our natural resources and the transportation that takes a long timebecause public buses are always crowded. However, I like where I am living and I will live there until I graduate from theUniversity and become an independent person, that is what I have always wanted, but, I haveto wait a little more. I will work as a teacher or as a translator, I will live alone in a newneighborhood or in another country and, I will be able to buy all what I want for myself. THE MISSING LANGUAGES Figure 1: Tribe of Embera (2012) One of the principal problems of the current youth in Colombia is the lackof their national identity. The mass media is helping them to adopt a single andpopular model of personality, influencing our different costumes or traditions fromother potential countries such as the United States, Mexico or England. Also, itcould be a demand of the world society that is instructing us to get adapted to aparticular global connection and uniformity. Those factors make us lose ournation’s cultural features; and one of these features that we are not recognizing isour proper native languages. According to ONIC (2015) “There are 70 languages in Colombia, Spanishand another 69 native languages.” For that reason, we can say that Colombia is notjust a cultural paradise; it is also a rich linguistic resource. However, Colombianpeople do not recognize it because we are not educated or instructed about thattopic. Indeed, a factor that comes into play in this issue is education. In the differentregions in Colombia, where the majority of their habitants are natives orindigenous, it is common to teach their own language to their next generations
because it is a generational and ancient tradition. Nevertheless, in the common schools, located in the biggest and most recognized cities in Colombia, the most common second or foreign languages that are taught are the most recognized ones in the world such as Mandarin, French, and the most principal one, English. From my point of view, the responsible of that situation is the Government and correspondent authorities. However, it is not reflected in the different laws of the Colombian Constitution. These laws are just words and oaths from that organization written in a paper. The 2010 Constitution of Colombia, in its 1381 law states that: Colombia native languages are an integral part of the intangible cultural heritage of the people who speak them; and therefore they require special attention of the state and the public authorities for the protection and strengthening of the Colombian culture. The plurality and diversity of languages is an outstanding expression of cultural and ethnic diversity of Colombia and in order to reaffirm and promote the existence of a multiethnic and multicultural nation, the State, through various agencies of the central administration perform different functions related to the subject of native languages or ethnic groups who speak them. Also through local authorities, it promotes the preservation, safeguarding and strengthening of the Colombian native languages, by adopting, funding and implementing specific educative programs. However, we can find other reality in our country as the majority of Colombians do not know about these languages and are not interested in learning them. That is why, they are called and labeled as the missing languages which are more complicated to rescue and value taking into account the situation in which the mandatory changes the current society is imposing us. If we just want to rescue a little part of our Colombian culture and identity, we should feel proud of these languages, know and learn about them because we come from a country that has a1
very wealthy and wonderful culture reflected, in one part, by these native languages.
