The Tree of Tales (Story I): My Homely Garden- General Awareness Pete, Josh and Vikram enjoyed playing in the park every evening. They would finish their homework and run off to play football or cricket or any other sport that caught their fancy. There were many other children playing different games and sports in the park too. Since the park was surrounded by different buildings and societies with a watchman at the entrance of the park, the parents never worried about safety or security of their children. However, for the last few days they noticed something odd. A man was standing in one corner of the park and just watching them play. He would not approach them or speak to anyone, but just stand in a corner outside the boundary wall and stare at the children. 5

The children found it odd that the man would stand and watch them play but they did not want to tell their parents, as they were afraid their parents would not let them play at the park anymore. Then, a few days later, as the boys were playing the ball escaped from them and landed a little way away from the man. Vikram went towards the man and asked him to pass them their football back. However, instead of picking up and passing the ball to the boys, the man smiled politely and pulled out a chocolate from his pocket and offered it to Vikram. Vikram did not know what to do. He just stood there silently. Fortunately, his friends came running over to him and picked up the ball. They asked the man why he was offering them chocolates and started making noise. The guard at the gate got alerted and came running over. He asked the boys to go home, while he shooed the man away and threatned to call the police if he ever showed his face here again. 6

Self Awareness As we grow older, we feel that our parents do not understand our problems. We stop sharing our day-to-day life with them. We feel as if our friends and peers understand us better. While our friends and peers can talk to us and help us, never forget that our parents always have our best interest in their hearts. They have more experience and understanding than our friends do. Our parents will never make any decision that is not good for us. In the above story, what would you have done if some stranger came and offered you a sweet or chocolate?  Stay quiet and walk away.  Make a lot of noise and scram at the man, until someone came over to help you.  Take the sweet from the man and walk with him. In any situation where a stranger offers you something, or even talks with you, you should never speak back or take anything from him. Alert the people around you by making as much noise as possible. No matter what, if you see some stranger standing and trying to talk to any child, immediately alert any adult in authority to the danger. At this young and confusing age, always understand the importance of 7

good and bad touch. It helps you handle “not so positive events” in life in a better way so that it does not affect your growth and personality and also, it makes you emotionally strong. What is Good And Bad Touch Good Head May not like Bad Face Mouth Neck & Shoulders Chest Stomach Hand Buttocks & part between our legs Thigh Legs A bad touch is when someone touches you in such a way or place that makes you uncomfortable. A ‘bad touch’ could even be from someone you know, an older person, a relative, a family friend. Do not be scared and do not keep this a secret. Do not blame yourself for a bad touch, instead alert your parent or teacher to the incident and let the ‘bad person’ be punished for it. 8

The Tree of Tales (Story II): My Enchanted Garden- National Work & Pride Lily was a lovely young girl. She got good grades at school, she loved to play sports and all her classmates and teachers adored her. There was just one small problem. Lily had a bad habit of taking more food on her plate than she could eat. While Lily came from a well-to-do home, she never understood what it was to be hungry. Her parents loved her and made the mistake of never correcting her bad habit. Lily would pile large portions of food onto her plate and then waste more than half of it when she was full. One day at school, during the break, her teacher saw how much food Lily had wasted and just thrown into the bin. Rather than calling her out and scolding her the teacher kept quiet. That night she thought long and hard about how to explain to Lily the seriousness of her error. The next day, the teacher rolled in a projector and a short film. The film was about various colourful revolutions that took place in India. The more Lily watched the documentary, the guiltier she started to feel. Seeing so many hungry, malnourished children in the short film startled Lily. She made a promise to herself to never take more than she could eat and share food with others when she could. 13

Waste Not The short film that Lily saw spoke of various colourful revolutions started in India. But before we speak of them, let’s understand what exactly a REVOLUTION is: A revolution is a change that is brought about by people in a positive manner and that affects the entire society for the better. The revolutions that India faced included the GREEN revolution, WHITE revolution, SAFFRON revolution and BLUE revolution. The GREEN revolution helped to increase the food grains and protien- rich pulses production in the country. This was done because many people in the country, especially children were losing their lives to malnourishment since they did not get protien rich food. The WHITE revolution helped to increase milk production, making it easier and cheaper to buy. Milk is an importnt source of calcium and is a 14

must for healthy teeth and bones. The SAFFRON revolution aimed at helping Indians reduce the use of wood or coal, or petrol and diesel as sources of fuel. And rather use SOLAR Power as a clean energy source. The BLUE revolution was undertaken to increase awareness among Indians that we have one of the longest coastlines in the world. And for that reason we must develop better technology to catch fish, breed fish and ensure that every household in the country gets clean drinking water. But, a revolution can ONLY BE SUCCESSFUL if there are smart, civic-minded people backing the revolution. It is up to each and every one of us to NOT WASTE FOOD OR WATER. Did you know that the word INFRASTRUCTURE is an extremely important term that is a basic requirement for the advancement of any nation and its people? Irrigation, power, transport, banks, educations, health and sanitation, clean water supply and housing all fall under the term ‘infrastructure’. 15
