SARAH KAYLAN STRICKER Contributing Writer NEAR The trick to falling in love with whatever place you’re living in is to find out what it celebrates. This year, Fayetteville celebrates the 39th International Folk Festival from Sept. 22 to 24. “Travel around the world in one weekend — with- out even leaving downtown Fayetteville!” the Arts Council’s website boasts. “Celebrate our communi- ty’s cultural diversity with music and dance, arts and crafts and international food.” Mary Kinney, the Fayetteville Arts Council mar- keting director, said the city and individual neigh- borhoods are full of diversity that isn’t seen or fully appreciated every day. The festival allows people to explore many cultures in one weekend — each day with a slightly different focus. 4th Friday, Sept. 22, will begin the festivities at the Arts Council building with “a taste of Fayetteville’s arts and cultural offerings, from gallery openings to artist performances,” the website says. On Saturday at 10:30 a.m., festival-goers can watch as performers line Hay Street with music, dancing and colorful culture during the Parade of Nations. From noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and then again from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, multiple stages, an interna- tional café, art vendors and a children’s area will keep Festival Park buzzing. Performers will include Bollywood dancers Mystic India and Gypsy/folk/punk band Sirius. B. “I don’t think anyone will be able to sit still during their per- formance,” Kinney said. And for those craving international foods, the festival is the spot to be. “Whether your thing is ox tails or egg rolls — you can find that!” Kinney said.14 SEPTEMBER 2017 DETAILS:

STEPHANIE CRIDEREditor in ChiefWhy Do You Run? The military has an impact on everyone who serves. For the women in this story, the fitness and discipline theyexperienced in the military was a big influence on who theyare now. According to a 2008 study by the Stanford UniversitySchool of medicine that followed 500 runners for more than 20years, runners have a longer life span, a more active lifestyle, fewer disabilities and are half as likely to die an early death asnonrunners. When the study started, runners were investingabout four hours a week into running. Two decades later, thesubjects (now in their 70s and 80s) were running about an hourand 15 minutes a week but were still seeing benefits. The study cited a variety of health benefits that relate torunning, including reduced cardiovascular issues, cognitivebenefits, lower cancer risk and lower instances of neurologicaland infectious diseases. That alone would be enough forsome to head to the store right now to invest in running shoes.Runners who are committed to the lifestyle, though, say there ismore to it than health benefits. When she got out of the Army and the doctors told her she shouldn’t run, she took them at their word. In 2000, her son Toby was born with cerebral palsy. It was challenging. In 2009, family issues came up that made her reflect on her life. Linn decided it was time to get in shape. She lost more than 100 pounds and decided to give running another try. It was hard work, but rewarding. It wasn’t long before Linn started bringing Toby on her runs with her. “It requires extra work and special conveyance, but it means so much to him,” Linn said. “Toby’s first race was a 5K in 2010. I helped him complete the Marine Corps Marathon. He’s done triathlons, too.” Now, running is something the entire family does with Toby. Since Toby’s legs don’t work, he races in a wheelchair pushed by family members. “When we first started running, there were many race directors who turned us away because they didn’t know what to do with people like us. Now races are the place we feel most included,” Linn said. Linn said running helps give her the strength and energy she needs for her passion as a family advocate. “I help educate families of special needs kids. I advocate for them and help inform them of the law. I’d like to start a nonprofit to help families with special needs kids.” SEPTEMBER 2017 19
