BODY IMAGE Summer is here! So is the spotlight on women's bodies. We’ve all felt it, whether it’s a simple joke about getting your “beach body” ready or it’s being told not to wear a certain top because it’s “unflattering” or “offensive” on you. Local women responded to a basic prompt asking for their thoughts on body image as the warm months arrive. Here’s what they had to say. F A T ISN’T A DIRTY WORD Fat isn’t a dirty word. Throughout my life, my weight has fluctuated, as it does for many women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. It has only been in the past few years that I have truly embraced that being fat has nothing to do with my value as a person, and this is liberating. Activist and author Roxane Gay says, “Fat is not an insult. It is a descriptor. And when you interpret it as an insult, you reveal yourself and what you fear most.” The body positivity movement has reminded me that my worthiness as a person has nothing to do with my weight. This doesn’t mean I don’t struggle with insecurities, and it doesn’t mean I don’t desire to lose weight — it simply means that I don’t derive my own sense of self-worth based on my weight. And for those who continue to fat-shame, or have issues with the body positivity movement because they feel it “celebrates being unhealthy,” fat does not always equal an absence of healthy living. And furthermore, having to even approach anyone with this argument is almost equally problematic. It perpetuates abuse against larger bodies and the mindset that we owe it to the general public to fit into someone else’s image of what is acceptable. The body positive movement doesn’t exist to “celebrate obesity” or even to combat ideas about what is and isn’t healthy, it exists to remind people that all of us, regardless of size, are worthy of respect, love and visibility. — Adrienne Trego, 33, Artist and Arts Administrator Body image. I doubt there’s a woman alive who isn’t aware of hers. From Rubens’ amply fleshed nudes to Twiggy, who looked like a walking stick, to today’s impossibly white teeth and gym-toned abs … who sets these ever-shifting standards of perfection? “Don’t you ever just want to let go?” my sister asked me not too long ago, “to forget about the mirror and eat whatever you want?” Truth be told, I have been pining for that day. But, thanks to that hot babe octogenarian Jane Fonda, I find myself in the seventh decade of my life still acutely embarrassed by my muffin top and locked in a love/ hate relationship with dessert. Such is the current unrelenting critical scrutiny of women’s bodies that I will probably go to my grave bitterly regretting that I passed on the key lime pie. — Prudence Mainor, Semi-retired Sometimes I think it’s either a mad obsession or maybe just a unique talent. I can look at any photo ever taken of me and tell you exactly how much I weighed at the time. Through thick and thin (and everything in the middle), I have too often allowed my emotions to be ruled by a damn number. The one on the scale. The digital variety is always the scariest — because those numbers scream in lights. As if to say, “Ha! So that intermittent fasting thing didn’t work out for ya, did it?! Ditto for Keto! Consumed too many calories, huh, broad? Overdid it on the sodium, too. Get your sweet hiney back to the gym, y1o6uJUslNuEg!2Y0O19U DESERVE A SCARY NUMBER.” 16 JUNE 2019

COVER STORY: CONTINUED The scale is a cold, cold monster. Yet, I always keep trying. Recently, my goal was to lose (I’m not even going to insert the number of pounds here) by my birthday, April 7. Guess what? I gained weight instead. The stupid scale doesn’t lie, I’m telling you! (No wonder my lovely, feisty German Mama tossed her scale out the window, for real, when she was about the age I am now, but that’s another story.) Body image is a crazy thing. I look back at photos of when I thought I was fat, only to realize I was one semi-hot and skinny chick. Life goes on. My only strategy for summer is to eat healthy 80 percent of the time, drink more water, get my sweet hiney back to the gym, enjoy life, and stay off the scale. If I don’t toss it out the window first. — Janet Gibson, Marketing and Communications Specialist It is very important for us to love the skin that we are in. Everyone has something about their body that they don’t like or wish was different. Every stretch mark, dimple, or added amount of thickness is where it is supposed to be. Love yourself unconditionally and eat every crumb of that piece of chocolate cake with ice cream on top! — Shanessa Fenner, Elementary School Principal Morning dew, plump, vibrant wiggles Evening past, slender, statuesque, bold Then by night, plundering, wondering where the day went. — Zakiyyah Marcell, Ph.D., 49, Educator I’ve never thought of myself as someone who struggles with insecurity. Growing up, whatever efforts I did undertake to improve my appearance looked more like challenges to me than battles already lost. Every summer was an opportunity to grow out my hair, improve my wardrobe, better my makeup skills, so that I could properly shock all my schoolmates the following semester. While no one was ever shocked, per se, I regret to mention that I never fully grasped my personalized ideal until one fateful summer in high school. After that, whether by pride or a shift of values (I preferred the latter), I began to neglect my efforts at self-improvement. Subconsciously, however, I reveled in my appearance, and increasingly frequent compliments fell on my newfound confidence like water on a parched garden-bed. It wasn’t until a few months ago that I realized the repercussions of this confidence. I had learned to identify myself with my appearance, and the realization that these features would eventually change terrified me. Someday, my young skin could be riddled with wrinkles? My dark hair streaked with gray? No, thank you! My pride began to haunt me day after day. I have found that, since youth is fleeting and looks are ever-changing, confidence in these things is, at best, a disappointment. I’m in the process of learning how to maintain a positive self-image without idolizing it, and I hope my future self will thank me. — Avery Powers, 20, College s2t0u19de1n7t JUNE JUNE 2019 17

\"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy W H AV Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God I with your bodies.\" — 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 HI The temple (which represented the earthly dwelling place of AN Christ) was holy and to be cared for. Since Jesus left his Holy Spirit within us before he ascended into heaven, we are the THI earthly dwelling places of Jesus as we represent him. For the THIG sake of keeping up with trends of society, many women have forgotten their worth, value or respect and feel the need to HAS NEVER B show off their bodies. FOR PERSON Women were also created to be a \"helper\" for men (Genesis 2:18), and as women we have the blessing and responsibility to help our brothers in Christ by dressing with dignity. Many men struggle with sexual immorality — lust, pornography, marital affairs — and I do not think we, as women, objectifying ourselves and putting ourselves on display is helping them. Satan is aware of this struggle (1 Peter 5:8) and is using this to destroy the family. I believe our sex-driven, self-pleasing society has only brought trouble and heartache. In regards to body image issues, many women struggle with comparing themselves to others externally. God does not make mistakes, and our bodies are beautiful in the eyes of our creator, the only person whose opinion really matters and is the source of our self-value. I believe women need to take care of their bodies — eating right, exercising, getting sufficient rest, etc. If we are doing that, it is really not important if we are thick, thin, short or tall. Different body types is an example of the creativity of God's hand. Personally, I used to desire being fuller or not as thin, but I am now so thankful for the body God has given me and aim to glorify him rather than draw attention to myself with my body. Ladies, you are very special. Know your worth! — Sarah Lindy, Elementary School Teacher I was raised in a culture of body positivity. Plus size, queen size, voluptuous, fat. Whatever you want to call it, having wide hips and thick thighs has never been a cause for personal lament. I am a black woman. Our bodies were seemingly designed to withstand the weighty endeavor of moving through the world not only as women, but as melanated beings. Pun intended. My body is strong. I have not borne children, but I have borne other circumstances that cause me to praise and honor the body that has carried me through. My body is built for hugs. As a child, and to this day, I associate comfort with soft, warm, all-encompassing embraces that I can sink into, and I love that I can share that comfort. My body is not public property. Consent, health care options, the bathing suit that I wear — these are my choices to make, not a p18oliJtUicNaEl t2a0l1k9ing point or public opinion free-for-all. 18 JUNE 2019

ING E COVER STORY: CONTINUED D My body and I don’t always get along, especially as I creep PS toward becoming a lady of a certain age. But we have been through a lot together, and I will always protect and care for her. ND And I will always champion other women to do the same. ICK — Ashanti Bennett, Arts Administrator, 39 GHS I am always amazed when I hear my besties talk about how they EEN A CAUSE feel about their bodies. Mostly because I never see the things NAL LAMENT they claim to hate most about themselves. When I was in middle school, one of my closest friends had the thickest, waviest, most luxurious red hair. Her eyes were bright blue and sparkled when she was excited or happy. Her smile was amazing. Her laugh, infectious. I would have given anything to experience that kind of exotic beauty. What she saw, though, was her freckles. She hated them. She said they made her feel ugly and ridiculous. I’d never noticed them until she pointed them out. Even then, I thought they were charming and just a part of who she was. They never seemed ugly to me or worth a second thought. She didn't feel that way. We lived in Georgia, and even in the summer, she wore long pants and long-sleeved shirts. That’s how much she hated her freckles. My college friend played most every sport and placed in just about every tournament and race she entered. She was healthy, fit and beautiful. One of her breasts was smaller than the other. She obsessed about how to dress so no one would be able to tell. I knew her for almost two years before she pointed it out. I’d honestly never noticed. And when I told her that, she accused me of trying to make her feel better about being a freak. But I honestly had never noticed. One of my first neighbors as an army wife had alopecia. She did not have a single hair on her head. She had an impressive wig collection and always looked amazing in public. It took about a year before she felt comfortable enough around me to let me see her without a wig on. She was always engaging and fun to talk to, but in the comfort of her own home, when she was in her element, she was a different person. Without her wig, she was carefree, relaxed and funny. And so beautiful. But it took her all that time to let me see her true self. And I am thankful she did. My hangup is my facial hair. I have polycystic ovary syndrome. One of the side effects is excessive hair growth — not on top of my head, unfortunately, but on my face. Left untended, I could probably join the circus as a bearded lady. I've spent a lot of time and money getting my face plucked, waxed and lasered. Part of my morning routine involves a magnifying mirror and a pair of tweezers. It should not be a challenge to love the body I live in — but sometimes it is. We have been together almost 50 years, she and I. I went through puberty, pregnancies, childbirth and now middle age in this body, and she has never let me down. That’s what I need to remember when I look in the mirror. — Stephanie Crider, 49, Publisher and Editor JUNE 2019 19 JUNE 2019 19

Rastafarians accepted the term and would refer to their “spiritual antennas” as dreadlocks. Since living off the land was a pride and privilege of the Rastafarians, they used no commercial products to groom and maintain their hair. No combs, brushes or picks touched their crowns. They used saltwater, aloe vera and cocoa butter, just to name a few natural products. It was no magic act — the hair would knot up, matte and lock up on its own. As the person lived their life and grew, so did the locks. Historically, Rastafarians have always been believers in God — an omnipotent being, the higher power, the most high, affectionately called “Jah.” Biblically, there are several accounts where hair is described as locks, including verses in Numbers, Judges, Ezekiel and Song of Solomon. In their eyes, Rastafarians were not creating a new hairstyle. They were simply letting their hair be and using the word “locks” to describe it, just as the Bible had done. Home décor The color of the year The Pantone color of the year for 2019 decor is Living Coral. This is a bright, fun color that can be used in a multitude of ways. Accent walls, accessories, art, area rugs … it brings a pop to any space. Not only that, but it works well in most rooms and pairs nicely with a plethora of other color palettes. Boldly patterned backsplashes Simple kitchens are a thing of the past. People are incorporating bolder color choices and graphic tile designs into this space. What better way to add your own touch than with a bright backsplash? Stand out and make an impact without creating an overly busy look by incorporating a tile backsplash into your design. Backsplashes are easy to have installed, add value to your home and, best of all, don’t require any major overhaul. Open shelving Instead of hiding your flatware, dishes, ingredients and cookbooks away, it’s now a trend to purposefully display these types of items. For example, in the kitchen, invest in some glass jars of varying heights for pasta, oats, dried fruit and more. The open shelving concept helps keep the kitchen open and bright. Paired with a colorful backsplash or some cute crockery, this trend can bring a personal feel to your home. Matte black kitchens and baths Last year saw a huge focus on making bathroom spaces spa-like and relaxing. This year, that trend continues. It’s all about bold, dark, sultry bathroom designs that evoke an indulgent high-end experience, and nothing creates a sense of drama better than black. Light wood floors Dark, rustic floors may have been all the rage in the past, but this year, paler- hued floors are making a comeback. Homeowners have a growing desire for more open, light spaces. Birch and oak are two top-selling floor options. They reflect more light and create a casual or luxurious feel in any space. 26 JUNE 2019 26 JUNE 2019

Did you know? Working out close to bedtime may not be as detrimental to sleep as previously thought. In fact, some sleep experts are now saying that workout sessions — including those that occur late in the day — can be mutually beneficial for improving sleep duration and quality. In the past, researchers believed that exercise in the evening could increase heart rate, raise core body temperature and send stimulating hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, through the body, which could adversely affect sleep. However, recent findings say it’s not all that troublesome. A study in the Journal of Sleep Research found that people who exercised vigorously for 35 minutes before bed slept as well as they did on nights when they did not exercise. The National Sleep Foundation’s 2013 Sleep in America poll also showed that people who exercised reported they snoozed better than those who didn’t work out, and exercising closer to bedtime did not affect sleep quality. Dr. Stuart Quan, a professor of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School, says the best workout time generally varies from person to person. Those who want to exercise at night can see how it impacts their sleep. If no problems occur, then nighttime workouts can continue. It’s also notable to point out that adrenaline and cortisol only take an hour to regulate and return to normal levels after vigorous activity. So slipping under the sheets an hour or two after a workout may be the best advice for nocturnal fitness fans. 28 JUNE 2019 JUNE 2019 28
