JUST SAYIN’ Pop me an email and tell me about the laughter in your life: [email protected] As a senior citizen, mother of two, stepmother of two more, grandmother of eight and — holy moly! — two great-grandchildren, Judy Stapleton has traveled many miles from her home stompin’ grounds of Mississippi. After raising her kids, she spent 29 years working for the federal government before retiring. She now works as a receptionist for F&B Publications in Fayetteville. Hey, ya’ll, I’m just sittin’ here thinkin’ how April spring is just beautiful — fresh flowers, plants, brsihnogweMrasy and the like. Except at my house! flowers? Several years ago, I had to have surgery. So, a friend Not at my of mine who lives in Virginia sent me a plant. I felt bad house 'cause I thought this plant won’t make it a week in my house. Well, it had dark green vines and a beautiful purple flower in the middle. Everyone who saw this plant commented on the beauty of it. I received the plant in November, and to my surprise, February rolled around, and it was growing out of the pot — so much that it had to be re-potted. I went to our local Walmart and got some potting soil, plant food and two new pots. My grandson volunteered to help in the re-potting. I told him I didn’t know anything about potting a plant, but I knew we had to be careful about the roots and try not to damage them. We were very successful with the green vines, but when it came to the flower, it was another story. I worked around the roots as much as possible, and then I dug the dirt from around the very bottom of the plant. You just ain’t gonna believe — when I got to the bottom of the flower, there were not roots at all … but wire. This plant that I had so carefully watered and told some of my deepest feelings to was plastic. Well, after the shock, anger and then the laughter of my craziness, I had to tell about it. Of course, I made sure I told the ones who had complimented me on my beautiful plant, so that I wasn’t the only one thinkin’ watering plastic plants would make them grow. So, now I just sit back — and whatever flower or plant comes up in my yard, I enjoy it from a distance. ’Cause my beautiful purple flower that was attached to the bottom of the pot never saw another day of sunshine. Naw. Not at my house, anyway. It hurts my feelings when my husband can take a stick or twig off of a plant, root it and make it grow into a beautiful flower. If anyone has any ideas on how I can get my black thumb to change into a green one, give me a shout at [email protected]. I would be so grateful. 1144 AAPPRRIILL 22001199
