Woman's Spotlight Elaina Ball By Keyuri Parab B eing a brand-new member of the Fayetteville community hasn't stopped Elaina Ball from becoming involved in the city's inner workings. Ball moved to North Carolina late fall of 2020 and took over as the first female chief executive officer and general manager of Fayetteville Public Works Commission. A native Texan, she graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in chemical engineering. Of her background, Ball said, \"I worked for six and half years for a utility in San Antonio and held a variety of roles there. I was then recruited up to Austin Energy to run a power plant and next worked for El Paso Electric. These positions led to my coming here. I am thrilled to be PWC's CEO.\" Having worked in many leadership roles, she feels honored to be the first female CEO of PWC, she said. The Fayetteville PWC is a combined utility providing electric, water and wastewater services for Fayetteville and surrounding Cumberland County communities. \"Part of my job is to face the challenges the business may have and solve them and take care of our team and customers,\" Ball said. \"I am working on getting our strategic plan updated and getting input from stakeholders, and the team is what I am working on this first quarter.\" The diversity of people in different fields, industries and walks of life propelled her to choose the job offer in Fayetteville compared to other positions. \"I hope to make PWC even more customer-focused and help make sure our services are safe and reliable while keeping the costs affordable,\" she said. PWC put out its first community solar panel system recently. With this move, Ball encourages readers to subscribe to PWC's Solar Circle and install panels. She said solar installation could help users with bill credits and clean energy goals. Keyuri Parab is the editorial assistant for Up & Coming Weekly. She loves writing, news and cooking. Keyuri graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington and moved to the Fort Bragg/Fayetteville area in 2020. Over time she hopes that people will view her as a kind person who likes to contribute back to the community. If she could choose any superpower, Ball said it would be to help open people's minds and intentions. \"So many times, we look past people as humans and friends, and we let words and labels cause us to hate one another. I wish I could help people cast those labels and words aside and see each other as humans. I think this last year has made me reflect on what it means to be human, and we can all do better, myself included.\"

FashiofonrFFoarlelcast By Nicole Raynor I t’s challenging to comprehend what one might need for fall fashion-wise while experiencing the hottest days of summer. We had record- breaking heat before summer that started with a recorded 97-degree day in May. However, designers and buyers must always think a season or two ahead in the fashion industry and know what trends will be hot next. Fall fashion this year will be much different from that of last year with the lifting of most COVID restrictions. Although the uptick in loungewear ― pandemic fashion essentials ― will ensue, dressier attire will return this fall as festivities and activities resume. I took a risk and bought this fabulous little boutique called Monkee’s during the midst of this pandemic. A friend asked, “Why in the world would you buy this store with all this uncertainty?” My reply was simply, “This can’t last forever!” America is the greatest country; I knew we would find a way through these difficult times. More justification for my business decision came through a funny graphic ― a meme asserting, I now know why the Spanish Influenza Pandemic of 1918 was followed by the Roaring Twenties.Everyone dressed up for EVERYTHING! I have high hopes our most recent pandemic will again be followed by a period of elation. It appears I am not alone, as many designers have similar hopes and predictions. Tops and dresses Some of us aren’t there yet, but just as with every hot fashion trend, we will all come around to the idea at some point. Let’s hope the designers remember how well we all loved our comfy clothes and the absence of buttons. Skirts and dresses will undoubtedly make their return as some of the hottest fashions for the upcoming cooler season ― not the long, ankle-skimming ones, but the midi- length ones instead. Oversized dresses, both midis and maxis, are most definitely in ― a trend adored by women all over. Monkee’s will have two new lines featuring these looks in the store this month, Lost and Wander and Allison New York. It’s all about the details for some designers, with balloon sleeves and ruffled collars, as seen in lines such as Olivia James. Bright citrus colors and bold patterns are on the fall fashion palette, present in most Crosby designs. Cozy sweaters? Yes, please! Definitely making a comeback, although bolder and brighter this year. Sweaters will remain a wardrobe staple for 2021. Footwear If you are into shoes, the hottest trend in footwear currently is the Lemon Jelly, a fun, sophisticated pool shoe in an array of colors. But, Nicole Raynor is the owner of Monkee’s of Fayetteville, an upscale boutique for women at 322 Glensford Drive, Unit 106. Contact Monkee’s at [email protected] or (910) 867-6001. Retiring from pro skiing six years ago, Eller competed in amateur classes for a few years afterward but now spends her time coaching and instructing Coble Ski School students and U.S. Ski Team skiers. Her coaching highlights include tenures with teams around the country and globe: the 2021 U.S. Jr. and U21 Teams in Florida; the 2018 Gold Medal World Team in Spain; the 2005 Gold Medal World Team in Germany; U.S. Jr. World Team Coach, from 2004 to present; 2000 Pan-American Jr. and 17-21 Elite Teams; the 2001 Pan-American Championships in Chile; and host of three United States Olympic & Paralympic Jr. Development Camps for USA Water Ski. Having traveled the world to compete and coach, she still says her favorite place to ski, train and instruct is right here at home at Coble Ski School, which she has headed up since 1995. Likewise, her husband has an award-winning background as a Pro Tour driver and water skier, too. The pair graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill together and met on the college ski team. The water skiers married soon after college and began training and working at Coble Ski School, which family patriarch Gary Coble bought as a training ground for his daughter's burgeoning professional career. This was a \"needle in the haystack find,\" according to Eller, as the lake they lived on near McGee's Crossroads ― on which she grew up skiing after the family moved from Boone Trail to Angier ― was closed and drained by the Environmental Protection Agency due to issues with its dam. The Cobles sold their home in Angier \"faster than they thought\" and bought a singlewide trailer to the land tract to live in. The family's younger daughter ― also a water skier who qualified for the Pro Tour but decided on dental school instead ― was away at college when the family moved from Angier to Lillington. According to Eller, her sister lives in Wilmington, skis competitively occasionally and has an 8-year-old son just starting the sport. Reflecting on their early days, she said, \"My parents lived in one end of the trailer, I lived 2 0 2 1 AU G U S T | 23

That all happened the first month.\" The Cobles lived in that while building a new home in the front of the property; soon afterward the Eller family of four constructed their home in the back. N.C. Water Ski Hall of Fame inductees Gary and Shirley Coble began their second careers here which continue today. Speaking of her dad's influence on her skiing, Eller said, \"When I would go to camps, workshops or to train in other places, my dad always came. Then he would take what he learned and use it at home in coaching me. My husband has been more so my coach the last 10 years or so of my career, but my dad was and will always be my coach and mentor.\" Family matriarch Shirley Coble eventually retired with 41 years of being a credit manager in Raleigh and became the company's chief financial officer. A winning water skier in her own right, she has competed in World Championships and won the U.S. Nationals. She is also a state record holder and continues to compete on both national and international levels ― now in her late 70s. \"My mom is my mentor, fellow skier and idol,\" Eller said. \"She goes hard and is very competitive. She won her first Nationals last year and plans to ski in the World Championships in France this September.\" Coble Ski School is an all-inclusive camp with air-conditioned, waterside accommodations for campers ― gender separated and featuring family suites ― indoor and outdoor dining facilities and a pro retail shop. From female farmers running turkey houses to female firefighters and EMTs, women are the backbone of our community. Examples of standout Beaver Dam women include Vicki West, a former Cumberland County Farmer of the Year; Jenna Daniels, the local elementary school principal; Virginia Bullard and other ladies auxiliary members that coordinate quarterly blood drives; and Crista Melvin, a local woman involved in ministry and teaching for the past 21 years who is currently working on a Master’s of Divinity degree. Resident Beckie Smith and her late husband Simon brought the Southern Softball Association of America to the Peter’s Creek area of Beaver Dam in 1984. It continues today under her leadership, host to tournaments here and up and down the East Coast ― from Florida to New Jersey. However, some of the ways of days gone by yet remain. For example, everyone still fights for Brenda Smith’s ham biscuits, Mary Agnes Knowles’ macaroni and cheese and Barbara Melvin’s chocolate cake at fall church celebrations like Homecoming and Harvest Day. Sure, we are “country” and proud of it but do not underestimate us. Women within our community make the world a better place as your pharmacist, dental hygienist, physician assistant, nurse and nurse practitioner, lawyer, accountant, teacher, engineer, banker, business owner, farmer, cosmetologist, manager and anything else you can think of. We are community volunteers, Little League coaches, Vacation Bible School leaders, Sunday School teachers, choir members and more. We are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, cousins, friends, support systems, cheerleaders and breadwinners. Most importantly, we are blessed to live, love and worship in this hidden gem of a community.
