Conversely, during the winter solstice, the sun is at its lowest point at solar noon for the year, and observers outside While solstice days are very noticeable to observers in mid to the tropics experience the least amount of daylight and the high latitudes, that’s not the case for observers in the tropics longest night of the year. — areas of Earth between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Instead, individuals experience two “zero shadow” The June solstice marks the beginning of summer for folks in days per year. On these days, with the sun directly overhead the Northern Hemisphere and winter for Southern Hemisphere at solar noon, objects cast a minimal shadow compared to the folks, and in December, the opposite is true due to the tilt rest of the year. If you want to see your own shadow at that of Earth’s axis of rotation. For example, this means that the moment, you have to jump. The exact date for zero shadow Northern Hemisphere receives more direct light from the days depends on latitude; observers on the Tropic of Cancer sun than the Southern Hemisphere during the June solstice. (23.5° north of the equator) experience a zero shadow day on Earth’s tilt is enough that northern polar regions experience the June solstice, and observers on the Tropic of Capricorn 24-hour sunlight during the June solstice, while southern polar (23.5° south of the equator) get their zero shadow day on regions experience 24-hour night deep in Earth’s shadow. That December’s solstice. Observers on the equator experience two same tilt means that the Earth’s polar areas also experience zero shadow days, being exactly between these two lines of a reversal of light and shadow half a year later in December, latitude; equatorial zero shadow days fall on the March and with 24 hours of night in the north and 24 hours of daylight in September equinoxes. the south. Depending on how close you are to the poles, these extreme lighting conditions can last for many months, their duration deepening the closer you are to the poles. Some serious science can be done by carefully observing solstice shadows. In approximately 200 BC, Eratosthenes is said to have observed sunlight shining straight down the shaft of a well during high noon on the solstice near the modern-day Egyptian city of Aswan. Inspired, he compared measurements of solstice shadows between that location and measurements taken north, in the city of Alexandria. By calculating the difference in the lengths of these shadows and the distance between the two cities, Eratosthenes calculated a rough early These images from NASA’s DSCOVR mission show the Sun-facing estimate for the circumference of Earth and provided further side of Earth during the December 2018 solstice (left) and June evidence that the Earth is a sphere. 2019 solstice (right). All that water fish and many species of invertebrates like squid, directly affects the Earth’s weather and climate. crabs, clams, worms and anemones. But there’s more to the oceans than what we see The oceans are so deep that they’re very difficult and feel at the surface. The oceans are very deep, for people to explore. There is much to learn about and we can divide the water into layers based on the types of life that live there, but we do know that how far down the sun’s light and heat reach. the oceans comprise many interesting, unique and important features and ecosystems. Most ocean life lives in the top layer, called the Epipelagic (Ehp-ee-puh-laj-ick) or sunlight zone, because it has the most heat and light from the sun. This layer is 660 feet deep and is affected by waves, wind and the seasons. Below the top layer is the Mesopelagic (Me-zo- puh-laj-ick) Zone, sometimes called the twilight zone, because only a little sunlight reaches here. It goes down 3,300 feet and is very cold. Because it is dark, some of the ocean life that lives here has developed bioluminescence, the ability to glow in the dark. Other animals have evolved large eyes to see as much light as possible. The next layer down is called the Bathypelagic (Bath-ee-puh-laj-ick) Zone, or midnight zone. No sunlight or heat reaches here, so it is constantly 39 degrees Fahrenheit and the only light comes from animals’ bioluminescence. This layer goes down 13,100 feet. That much water is very heavy, and many living things not adapted to the high pressure would get crushed under the weight. However, sperm whales, which normally live in the upper layers, can dive to this depth in search of food. The deepest part of most of the oceans is called the Abyssopelagic (Ah-biss-o-puh- laj-ick) or abyssal zone. It extends to 19,700 feet, has no light except bioluminescence, little oxygen, crushing water pressure and is almost freezing. A few places in the ocean are even deeper, called the Hadalpelagic (Hay-dahl-puh-laj-ick) or just the Hadal Zone. June 2023 www.kidsvillenews.com/cumberland 19

This imaginative story features favorite video game brothers, Mario and Luigi. characters and themes from some of my favorite Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) are games in the franchise — Mario Kart, Super Mario just your average brothers living and working Bros. and Donkey Kong. I love how this has elements in Brooklyn as plumbers, but when they find a of the classic games but also new twists, like how warp pipe in the sewer, they get transported to Princess Peach in this movie isn’t like your normal the magical land where Toads, Yoshi’s and Koopa Princess Peach in need of rescuing because she can save herself and is very skillful at doing so. I also love how relatable to our world the brothers are. We’ve seen much high-quality animation from Illumination recently, and this movie follows the trend. The animation is cheerful and lively, and the quality is top-notch. Jack Black, as Bowser, is absolutely perfect in this role. His versatile voice makes for an almost manic Bowser — scary, evil, quirky and laughable — and he can flip the two like a light switch. Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi have much chemistry and seem like very close brothers. Collectively, they are engaging and help us sympathize with the plot even more. The messages of The Super Mario Bros. Movie are that family is the most powerful thing in the world (real and virtual), and when working together, you can accomplish anything. I give The Super Mario Bros. Movie 4 of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 18, plus adults. Players of any Mario games will enjoy this. As a result, on the day of the summer solstice, which in 2023 occurs on Wednesday, June 21, the sun appears at its highest elevation with a noontime position. The precise moment the solstice occurs is when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer. This year the sun will reach that point at 10:57 a.m. Though it’s not always sunny on the summer solstice, when the sun is out throughout the solstice, people in the Northern Hemisphere can expect more hours of sunlight than any other day of the year. That provides yet another reason to welcome the official arrival of summer. Here are five fun facts about the summer solstice. • The North Pole is tilted toward the sun in the summer months, which is why our hemisphere has longer daylight hours with more intense sunlight and heat). • The farther north you are, the more daylight you will enjoy. • Evening bonfires have been a solstice tradition for centuries. • Around the world, many cultures hold agricultural abundance- inspired festivities to celebrate the solstice. • The solstice is a historically popular time for weddings.
