Thy Kingdom Come 2020 Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement that invites Chris ans around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus from Ascension Thursday 21st May to Pentecost Sunday 31st May. Praying for others to know Jesus is one of the most powerful things we can do. Persistent prayer for others brings transforma on to their lives. Consistently praying for others takes discipline, and there are many ways that we can build up habits that will help us to pray for our friends and family. Choose five people you would regularly like to pray for and write their names down onto a list. If you’re not sure who to pray for, ask God to guide you as you choose. Once you have se led on 5 names, commit to praying for them regularly by praying the following: Loving Father, in the face of Jesus Christ your light and glory have blazed forth. Send your Holy Spirit that I may share with my friends [here, name your friends] the life of your Son and your love for all. Strengthen me as a witness to that love as I pledge to pray for them, for your name’s sake. Amen. 17

A le er from Ali Brown—theChildrenand FamiliesWorker of Barcombe, Fletching and Newick Churches Hello everyone! Having now been in this job since January 2019, it has been a privilege to get to know children and families from the three Churches and communi es of Barcombe, Fletching and Newick and I have really enjoyed collec ve worship assemblies, clubs, cafés and events in all three villages. However, the rhythm of weekly travel from one loca on to another has been temporarily put on hold by Covid 19 since mid-March. Working with the amazing Reverends James and Paul, there has been a hasty shiA to online connec vity via live streaming, emailing, zooming and chaÀ ng on the phone. I was very sad to have to postpone Newick’s One Wonderful World Easter Holiday Club but hope that those children who were down to come along enjoyed receiving their Easter packs and that we can get the Holiday Club running in August! There are some lovely photos of the children’s craAs on the Newick Church webpage in the Youth News Picture Gallery page. Quickly grappling with new technology has not been easy for the more technophobe amongst us like myself, but I am managing to live stream a reflec ve moment and Bible reading for children and families from Newick Church’s Facebook page most mornings at 10am and the new Spring Club has been quickly established for craAs and a families’ service on Sunday mornings at 10am. It has meant transforming the dining room table into a make-shiA studio with extra lamps, stands, microphones etc but seems to be working! It is great fun giving live shout-outs to people ‘on air’ and I’ve picked up a few good ps from Joe Wicks when he does his Youtube workouts each morning (which are tough!). So, for families who are looking to connect with Chris anity and Church throughout this really destabilising, unnerving and weird me, take a look at Newick and Barcombe Church’s Facebook pages and websites for video streams and resources. When we can get together again, it would be wonderful to see you in person at Church so you can tell myself, James and Paul how you got through it! The Art SocietyUckfield, Lewesand Newick Self Sufficiency As our Art Society is now closed for the season and with me on my hands I have come to think how my parents coped during the War. In many ways they had to become self reliant and self sufficient. Almost in every back garden a nice li le pig was being fa ened up. Now I don't want to suggest that we all rush out and buy piglets but how about hens? They need only a small amount of ground and give you lovely eggs in return. I began self sufficiency many years ago when we first moved down to Sussex. We started with Rhode Island Reds, a good docile breed. I seem to remember there was an egg in their travelling box before they had even arrived, a good sign and they laid prolifically from then on. Hens are easy to look aAer, they just need a nice dry and safe house and run. One aAernoon in early Spring I was dismayed to find one missing. The Fox had obviously got her for dinner. Sadly I kept them all locked in for a couple of days and then went back to normal Three weeks or so later we were rewarded when she strode in with ten li le chicks troÀ ng along behind. Incidentally she also taught our dog be er manners. He had not been averse to chasing the hens occasionally and although he never caught one he caused quite a bit of distress. On this par cular morning he approached one of the chicks with the look in his eye of 'Ah here is a nice li le aperi f, ' Big mistake, Henny Penny a acked full frontal and then pecked, no holds barred, his fast retrea ng behind. He never touched the hens again. I do recommend keeping hens especially now, not only for the eggs but for the entertainment they provide. I can spend ages just watching them wandering around, pecking here and there. We always let us out if we are home and that is going to be for a long me now. They are also very keen on geÀ ng into the house if they can so watch out! Any advice needed and I can be reached on anne [email protected] Anne e Shelford 23

Messagefrom RoyBurmann - District Councillor Dear Residents - some snippets for you. Now we are in the Covid-19 lockdown it is hard to remember what is was like to just get up and go to mee ngs gatherings events and socials. But we must put up with it as we are protec ng the NHS from overload and saving lives. We must also express our thanks to the essen al workers con nuing through this difficult health onslaught, not just the Nurses Doctors and Health-workers but the Food businesses & their delivery and shop teams Sewage workers Refuse collectors Service Engineers and Depot workers keeping our phones internet gas water and electricity all running. Our Council in coopera on with local voluntary support groups are making sure the venerable are geÀ ng their essen al supplies of food and medicine and although this ba le is tough it is heartening to see the community in general rallying round to help each other. Before lock down there were several worthwhile events locally to acknowledge the Holo- caust Memorial day & I a ended a special concert. It is so important to remember & inform the next genera on about this horrific episode so we avoid repea ng it ever again. I helped run a fun Burns Event for our Cons tuency Associa on where our Local MP Maria Caulfield & Tom Tugendhat MP who is chairman of the Foreign Affairs Select Commi ee informed us as to what they expect the next year or so to hold for our rela ons with Eu- rope USA & the rest of the world. I a ended the first Scru ny Climate Change Panel of the Lewes District Council. We are helping to form policies & ac ons the Council must take to minimize its own impact on Climate Change & to be an exemplar for all our community. I a ended a Mee ng of NEASSA to plan our ac vi es for the VE day 75 year celebra ons star ng on the special Bank Holiday Friday 8 May 2020. Also the support & pastoral work the associa on carries out with local ex Emergency & Armed Services personnel was reported. I was so im- pressed that at their AGM I was proud to be accepted as a Trustee to help them further. I visited two local VEOLIA recycling plants - The Newhaven Energy Recovery Facility & the Woodlands In-Vessel Compos ng Facility to see our ever improving efforts to increase recycling & avoid land fill. Of course however good these are nothing will be be er than reducing the waste we create whenever we can. I spoke against increasing the Council Tax to the maximum allowed at the budget mee ng. This rise is to fund an increase in reserves which I did not feel well warranted & had not been needed up to now. The District Plan part 2 was adopted which will make our Neighbourhood plan more secure but we will need to revise & update it soon to keep it at full strength. Myself & others addressed the Planning Commi ee which again refused permission for the over-sized wrongly-sited development between The Rough & Vernons Road & their appeal was also lost. They have applied again but without sufficient changes to make it acceptable so I have opposed it again and prevailed on the Council not to rush to a decision but to wait ll the Covid-19 lockdown is over so it can been properly considered and I trust refused again. 26

Message from RoyBurmann /cont…. There has to be a further public hearing on the Mitchelswood Farm Development. This refusal must be upheld to protect our policies in the Neighbourhood Plan. Despite great efforts by myself the Parish Council & Lady Julia & Paddy Cumberbatch it will not be held in the Village Hall to make it easier for you all to a end instead a special bus will run for residents. The hearing was to be on 21st April in the Kings Church in the factory estate at Brooks Road Lewes but now is postponed un l aAer the Covid-19 has passed us by. The Council mee ngs are of course all cancelled but we are having regular telephone conferences to ensure all the essen al services and special requirements for our vul- nerable residents are working properly and I have also held several similar virtual mee ngs with the chari es school governor boards and other bodies I work on which although they are not ideal do let us get on with some of our programs and workload and are the best we can do at the moment. Please all keep Healthy and follow the instruc ons to protect yourselves and those around us. Bee Swarms It will soon be that me of the year again (end of April. May, June and some mes July) when honey bees will start to swarm. Swarming is the natural way that a colony of honey bees reproduces. It happens when a new queen has been formed and is almost ready to emerge from her cell. Unlike humans, the parent queen and flying bees leave their home rather than wai ng for the offspring to leave and set up independently. In prepara on for swarming honey bees gorge on the hive honey, prior to their journey in search of a suitable nes ng site. When they are ready to go, the bees leave the hive and can appear as a cloud in the air. We tend to spot them when they are res ng as a cluster, a ached to a tree branch, with the queen at their centre. Without her, there is no future for the colony. If you are unsure what a swarm looks like, please google it and select images to see. The res ng place for a swarm can be in the most unusual places and should not be confused with a wasp nest. Swarming bees have li le interest in people when in this mode, having gorged themselves on honey from the hive, prior to leaving it. As such, whilst it might look in mida ng, they really are quite docile. They’re priority is to find a safe place to set up their new colony, so you have li le to fear from them. However, you should s ll act with cau on as bees are wild insects. Please contact me If you see a res ng swarm. I’m a local beekeeper who will come and collect it. I have several hives on farms surrounding Newick. Newick Honey is available from the counter at the Pantry tea rooms. I will have small tubs available this year at the farm, for those who’d like larger quan es. Nick Pendleton Woodside Farm,Piltdown 07931751556 30

Simply email us at [email protected] with details of the make and model number of what is broken, preferably with a good quality photo or two, and we will see what we can do to offer you advice by email. Self Sufficiency Last month I wrote about the advantages of keeping hens, especially now. Well it seems that an awful lot of people have done just that and it is quite difficult at present to find any. However don’t give up, there should be lots available in the next month or so as it is the me that poultry producers have lots of young stock for sale. Some mes, if you are lucky, you do not have to buy them at all which leads me to tell you all about a certain young cockerel called St Pete. We live in Chailey near to the Church St Peter’s, and one aAernoon I received a phone call from our Rector asking if I had lost any hens. He had found two wandering about the green. I said I would go and check and found none were missing. I rang him back to find him in great distress because one had just been run over in the Church car park. Could I please come immediately and rescue the other one before disaster struck again? I rushed over with an old fishing net I keep for such purposes and then the fun began! I was only glad that none of our parishioners were there to witness as we chased the elusive bird round and round, in and out of hedges and up and down the lane. Eventually we were successful and, saying goodbye to a rather out of breath Rector, I returned with a very cross but also rather exhausted cockerel. We called him St Pete, obviously, and he was an absolutely star. He was very gentle and polite with the other hens and lived out a long and useful life with them all. I oAen wondered where he came from, we did ask around but with no result. Sadly people do just dump cockerels and I suppose he and his friend must have been one of those. WORLD DAY OF PRAYER On Friday, 6th March, Fletching Church held a Service to celebrate The World Day of Prayer; this year being led by the Chris an Women of Zimbabwe. This Service is held over a period of 36 hours in 170 countries and islands around the world, travelling through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas finishing in American Samoa, all par cipa ng in a great wave of prayer encircling the globe. Each year the service is wri en by a different country, this year being prepared by the Women of Zimbabwe with the theme ‘Rise! Take your Mat and Walk’. We were encouraged to reflect on the difficul es and unrest that have plagued their country for many years. They shared their challenges and hopes for the future as they con nue their oAen turbulent journey towards full reconcilia on. The congrega on came from fellow member churches from Newick, Nutley, Maresfield, Chailey, Heron’s Ghyll and Fairwarp. They were met at the door by Maggie Kay in Zimbabwean na onal costume. Having lived in the country for many years, Maggie was able to provide flags, pain ngs, etc., which helped set the scene. We heard about the poli cal unrest and armed conflict effec ng society. How the women con nue to pray and educate themselves as peace builders and to stand for reconcilia on in their land. The country suffers huge unemployment; many finding it difficult to provide for their families par cularly in the rural areas. Many suffer from domes c violence. There is an awareness and lobbying for gender equality. OAen families are headed by children who have lost their parents to HIV and AIDS. The majority of the popula on is Chris an and we prayed for the integrity of their churches and country, and for the needs of women and children. The congrega on recognsied the commitment to support all communi es with ac ons of love, peace and reconcilia on. The prepara on for the day is vast. An interna onal commi ee is based in New York and there are na onal commi ees in each par cipa ng country. Many thanks to all who contributed to the Fletching service. Next year the service will be held at Newick Church led by the Chris an Women of Vanuatu. The theme will be ‘Build on a Strong Founda on’. Juliet Ross 33

Message from ChrisArmitage, Chairman of Newick Parish Council Much has been happening in Newick over the last 3 weeks as you are probably aware of. The work done reflects hugely on this community and is a real credit to you all. Newick Community Response now boasts 487 members, a marvellous effort. Newick Parish Council along with all other councils in the UK have been disrupted by the lockdown and social distancing. Our last mee ng which should have been held on 24th March had to be cancelled. We have been taking advice from a variety of “trade professionals” as to how best to proceed so as not to disadvantage the residents of Newick but keeping within the law. It was vital that we con nue to have monthly mee ngs to discuss urgent finance, planning and environmental issues as well as COVID 19 related ma ers. Last week the Government published regula ons to allow virtual commi ee mee ngs. These regula ons are common to all councils and all sub commi ees and all must adhere to the new set of regula ons. No doubt there will be concerns and not all District/Parish Councils will want to embrace this change. Virtual commi ees face technical challenges. To help safeguard against glitches on the night, some councils have been holding dry runs of virtual commi ees. Newick Parish Council will certainly be having a prac ce run. For our part we are determined that it will be business as usual. Newick Parish Council will hold its first virtual mee ng at 7pm on 28th April 2020 and will con nue to ‘meet’ on the last Tuesday of every month using this method un l either May 2021 or un l all restric ons on movement are liAed for all member of the community. During this me no separate commi ee mee ngs will be held, and commi ee business will be covered by the relevant commi ee chairs in the full Parish Council mee ng. Agendas will be published on the newick.net website within the normal mescales. Agenda will be a lot less than normal as the mee ng content will ini ally only be urgent and mportant ma ers, for example planning applica ons, budget approval, grant applica ons. Members of the general public will be able to contribute as normal, albeit virtually. The mee ngs will be recorded, and minutes wri en and published as usual. A new standing order for how mee ngs run, based on the new legal framework will be considered at the start of the first mee ng. Guidance indicates that new appointments should not be made, and this is likely to include co-op on. The Chairman will not be elected in the annual mee ng in May. As much as possible mee ngs will run within the exis ng standing orders. 34

One Hour of Exercise 1 Corinthians6:19-20 (NIV) 19Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore, honour God with your bodies. Dear Lord, There are so many ways to keep fit and healthy, whether that’s inside or outside the home and so many benefits to moving about that make us feel happy! King David danced and rejoiced in your name and so can we. Thank you for the giA of movement! Let’s dance! In Jesus’ Name, Amen 38
