The Changes of theBy:KevinGilded Age StoneThe Gilded Age was a period of American historybetween 1860-1900s that was a important age inthe american society.

ItalianItalians migrated out of Italy, making Italy the scene of the largest voluntaryemigration i world history. There were laborers, a small population of craftsmen.Summary:

NativismHostility toward immigrants by native-born people. It had surfaced diring the heavywave of irish immigration in the 1840s and 1850s. Nativists opposed immigration forthe influx of Catholics from countries such as ireland, italy,and poland. Led to thefounding of two major anti-immigrant organizations.

Building of skyscrapers and publictransportationBusinessmen built upward rather than outward. Skyscrapers began to appear . tomove people around cities quickly.

Tenement housingMultifamily apartments, usually dark, crowded, and barely meeting minimum livingstandards.

Problems due to urbanizationCity living posed the risks of crime, violence, fire, disease, and pollution. They gotworse and complicated the ability of urban governments to respond to theseproblems.

Political machines and party bossThey gained power because cities had grown much faster than their governments.

ReformsWhy were the implemented, what reforms were implemented

Realism in artRealist artists did not generally choose heroic or historical topics They paintedordinary people doing ordinary things. It captured many of the characteristics of theera such as clothing styles, social relationships.

Populists and the populist partyMovement to increase farmers political power and work for legislation in theirinterest. Had more farmers produce more crops, but increased supply causedprices to fall.
