A warm welcome to Unicaf University, Malawi I am delighted to introduce the Unicaf University, Malawi prospectus for the academic year 2016-2017. These pages set out the innovative vision, essential mission and core values of Unicaf University, a unique and exciting new development that promises to provide greater higher education opportunities and a brighter prospect to aspiring students, both locally and from the surrounding regions. This prospectus explains the administrative and academic structures of the University, the regulations governing its academic activities, as well as the currently available courses of study. This is a dynamic and forward thinking, agile institution which promises to open up learning to all those who have the ability and ambition to study. Unicaf University has developed from a family of Higher Education Institutions which draw on a rich heritage of academic traditions and represents an academic community of scholars, researchers and administrators with an unparalleled accumulated experience of curriculum and partnership development and long experience of delivery of transnational education. Welcome to Unicaf University, Malawi As the Rector, I most sincerely welcome you to Unicaf University in Malawi. Unicaf University has its origins in Europe and is in partnership with US, UK and European Higher Education institutions offering internationally recognised qualifications. In Malawi, Unicaf University programmes are registered and approved by the Malawi Government through the National Council for Higher Education, an arm of government that exercises quality control in public and private institutions of higher learning in the country. The catchment area for Unicaf University extends from Malawi to all countries South of the Sahara. It has brought the most sought out Quality Higher Education to the region in order to benefit the people of Africa. The Unicaf University flexible delivery models Unicaf University offers full flexibility in teaching and learning utilising different delivery models: The blended learning mode of delivery offered by Unicaf University uses existing teaching practices as well as some innovative new methods to enhance the learning experience of the student. Learning experience at Unicaf University You will learn through a mixture of independent study, lectures, tutorials and other methods. Lectures One of the ways that students are taught at Unicaf University is through lectures. Typically lectures will include talks or presentations, for about an hour each time delivered by a member of the Unicaf University academic staff. Lectures take place in the lecture rooms at our state-of-the-art campus in Malawi or at one of our international Learning Centres around the world. Lecturers provide a guide to the topic and indicate important points and themes for students to consider. Students combine the on-the-ground lectures with the online material available through the state-of-the-art platform to benefit the most. Tutorials Face-to-face tutorial teaching is a unique aspect of the educational experience that Unicaf University offers its students. An academic tutor will meet students in small groups, typically three times a week to offer tutorials towards the taught material. In these classes students will develop a better understanding of topics and integrate ideas from their reading and lectures. The key difference between lectures and tutorials is the level of participation expected from the students. For tutorials students will be expected to have read about the subject in advance and participate in the discussions, exchanging ideas and views with other students and the tutor.22

Other teaching methodsUnicaf University uses technology to make a wide range of additional teachingmethods available to students. These include individual and group projectwork, problem-based and peer-assisted learning.Unicaf University is committed to high quality, innovative teaching to helpstudents reach their full potential.Independent learningLearning at the university level is very different from school or college.Students should get used to the different types of studying and the demands ofeach programme. Students have to be proactive, manage their own time anddevelop their independent learning skills. The Unicaf University studentadvisers are always available to provide help and guidance on how studentsshould study most effectively and how to succeed in the universityenvironment. International Students We welcome all international students to the Unicaf University and we wish them success in their studies. Please ask for a copy of the Unicaf University International Student Guide from the Student Affairs Office in which you will find information about most of the formalities and procedures, both before and after your arrival to a Unicaf University campus. Students will find information ranging from immigration regulations, to instructions on how to claim a VAT refund. Also included in the guide are the contact details of the many services which are available to support students throughout their stay such as accommodation, student support and student affairs. After reading the guide, for any unanswered questions, students should contact the International Office for further information at: [email protected] Welcome and reception of International Students The Unicaf University Welcome Team will be present to help you when you arrive at the airport and to direct you to the transport service provided by the University. Make sure you inform the International Office of your travel arrangements before travelling.24

AccommodationGreat efforts are made to arrange accommodation for all international students providedstudents request the assistance of the International Office for accommodation. A numberof accommodation options are available including apartments, houses and/or hotelapartments. Students are requested to discuss their accommodation needs with theAccommodation Officer of the International Office.Orientation ProgrammeAn international orientation programme is held over four or five days for all internationalstudents just before they start classes. All new international students, undergraduate orpostgraduate, are welcome to attend. The programme provides information on theUniversity services available to international students. The International Office organises anumber of social events for students to meet and socialise with fellow students.Global student communityOur diverse international community offers all of our students the opportunity to learnmore about the world.We attract some of the best students from all over the world. The Unicaf University Doctorate degrees *A doctorate degree is the highest academic qualification that an institution can awardfollowing an agreed programme of study. The duration of study for such degrees istypically three to six years. A candidate is examined on the basis of a thesis, portfolio,artefact(s), clinical practice or other output which must demonstrate the researchquestion, critically evaluate the extent to which it has been addressed, and make anoriginal contribution to knowledge. Application procedure Unicaf University has the following application procedure for prospective doctorate candidates in place: a. Doctorate applications are accepted all year round. b. Students submit the application using the Unicaf University online application form and by paying the application fee. c. Applicants for doctorate study should supply the following in support of their application: A research project outline or statement of intent Evidence of ability to be able to undertake independent research Degree transcripts At least two academic or professional references Writing samples or a portfolio of creative work. Every applicant meeting the Unicaf University entry requirements is invited to an interview. Candidates are expected to possess a Master's degree or equivalent.48

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree Programme The goal of the PhD programme is to prepare the next generation of leading researchers. The PhD is a programme of independent, self-directed academic research degree, supported by a team of supervisors that makes an original contribution to knowledge. The PhD programme also supports the development of research and generic skills to equip you to operate successfully as a professional researcher in any setting. The essential requirement of a PhD is the creation of new knowledge and being a researcher means developing new ideas and improving understanding through the creation of new knowledge. Each PhD student must take a number of modules which are offered online, and also complete a dissertation. Students must defend their dissertation in a \"viva voce\" (spoken) examination.
