Behavioral Expectations “When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.” (Luke 12:48). At the Gatherings, we have a lot to accomplish in a short period of time. Your leaders have worked very hard to prepare valuable lessons and activities. To respect both your time and the leader’s time, the following behavioral expectations have been established: ü Arrive on time (if you are going to be late or absent, please contact your grade level leader) ü Turn your phones off or put them in the basket when you arrive ü Be attentive and actively engage yourself in the activities ü Keep all body parts to yourself: There is absolutely NO horseplay or public displays of affection (PDA) ü Treat everyone with kindness and respect: This includes not violating personal boundaries, such as hiding someone’s personal property as a “joke” Failure to comply with these expectations will result in a meeting with the student, POSSE Leadership team and the parents. If misbehavior persists, you will face disciplinary action up to, and including, restriction from future Gatherings, community service outings, fellowship activities, and/or the mission trip. Community Service Each student is expected to complete a minimum of 100 community service hours each academic year. When you achieve 100 plus community service hours, you will be honored with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. This prestigious award gives added credence to any resume and college application and provides valuable writing material for college essays. All community service hours MUST be submitted to Anso and Verla Michel on a MONTHLY basis. It is THE STUDENT’S responsibility to keep track of the community service hours. Worksheets and/or digital access will be provided to students to keep track of service hours. Students are expected to provide their own transportation to community service events. 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

POSSE is always looking for POSSE parents/adults to volunteer or even join our POSSE team. Please speak with Anso and Verla Michel for more information. 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

P.O.S.S.E. PROGRAM OVERVIEW I. MISSION YEARBOOK NOTE: “[Thank you Mr. Watts], I’ll always remember that I dared to be different and it made all the difference!” -Katharine Sachs, Private School 9th Grader MISSION: Path of Success Students of Excellence (“P.O.S.S.E.”) is a Christ-centered program committed to equipping students with the knowledge and tools necessary to receive God’s vision for their lives and to glorify God in their relationships, academics and future careers. II. ACTION PLAN You ROCK! Every teenager should have the advantage of this course!” -Danielle Groetzinger, High School Freshman, fall, 1996 STRATEGY Path of Success Christian Leadership Program begins with the presentation of the Path of Success Christian Leadership Seminar to all interested high school students who attend Cornerstone Christian Center or are in a Connecticut high school. DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES • The Path of Success Christian Leadership Seminar o The Christian Leadership Seminar consists of six 45-minute sessions, interspersed with group activities. The key factor that differentiates the Path of Success system from others is its effective delivery of tangible tools that students are able to utilize immediately to effectuate change in their lives. The Program is further distinguished from motivational speakers and programs, as it is both a non-profit organization and has developed its systems based on a decade of actual experience working with youth. 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

o The dynamic six-part Leadership Seminar will be taught over two days. Path of Success Student Guidebooks are provided for each participant to chronicle thoughts and areas in need of growth. Session 1: Tapping the Spirit Within Teaches students how to unleash their God-given potential by living on the level of desire. Session 2: Renewing Your Mind Teaches students how to overcome pains of their past to live out God’s plan for their future. Session 3: Dream Big Dreams Introduces students to the power of “dreaming on purpose.”© Session 4: Mastering the Art of Goal Setting Shows students how to outline a plan for turning their dreams into reality. Session 5: Who Are You? Character vs. Personality Challenges students to live based on biblical principles, rather than public praise. Session 6: Daring to be Different Instills in students the courage to walk their newfound path of success. THE PATH OF SUCCESS CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP PROGRAM P.O.S.S.E. is a four-year comprehensive system which identifies students in the spring semester of their eighth grade year, and provides them leadership training, character development and academic support until they enter college. Studies have shown that youth personal development systems are most effective when they are comprehensive, long term, intrusive, and centralized. Through the six-phase system described below and based on the principles taught during the Leadership Seminar, P.O.S.S.E. students will take part in leadership retreats, outdoor challenges, summer internships in both public and private industries, community service activities and, the college admissions process. 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

Path of Success Center future plans involve the establishment of Cornerstone Christian Center. The Center will provide the needed physical facility to provide office space, meeting space for mentors and Team Advisors, and a supportive haven for P.O.S.S.E. students. The Center will also provide P.O.S.S.E. students with an opportunity to become skilled in the use of technology resources. The Center’s atmosphere will be supportive and comfortable yet provide professional surroundings for activities with community leaders. The P.O.S.S.E. initiative will consist of the following six phases: Phase I - Identification, Selection & Orientation: “Diamonds in the Rough” Time Frame: Eighth Grade – Second Semester Description: During this phase, potential P.OS.S.E. youth are identified and provided an opportunity to learn more about the P.O.S.S.E. system. Identification and Selection: P.O.S.S.E. will work with youth leaders to identify prospective youth. Accepted students will sign a letter of commitment to full participation in the six-phase P.O.S.S.E. system. Parents will also be required to sign a letter of commitment, as family support is essential to P.O.S.S.E.’s success. Orientation: After P.O.S.S.E. students are chosen, participants and their parents will be invited to Cornerstone Christian Center for orientation. At the event, the participants will have the opportunity to meet each other and members of the Path of Success Leaders Team. In addition, participants will receive an in-depth introduction to P.O.S.S.E. to gain a full understanding of the exciting opportunity that awaits them. Phase II - Principles of Leadership: “Unleashing Your True Potential” Time Frame: Pre-freshman Summer - Freshman Year End Description: The P.O.S.S.E. Leadership Retreat represents the seminal learning activity in the P.O.S.S.E. program for the P.O.S.S.E. students and their parents. The students will attend the two-day Retreat during the summer prior to their freshman year. During the Retreat, P.O.S.S.E. students will meet the Grade Level Advisor (GLA) to whom they are assigned. Leadership Retreat: During their pre-freshman summer, P.O.S.S.E. students will attend a two-day Leadership Retreat to begin their new journey along the path of success. The Leadership Retreat will be based on the principles taught in the Leadership Seminar, which has provided personal development training to thousands of students across the country since 1991. 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

Parents will attend a separate Retreat and will receive an abbreviated version of the Leadership Seminar to help them better understand the principles their children will be encouraged to live. In addition, the parents will take part in a series of parenting and informational workshops designed to educate them on the challenges their children will face in high school and to provide them with the requisite skills and tools needed to guide their children successfully through high school and into college. Utilizing leadership workshops, group activities, team building exercises, and adventure-based training, P.O.S.S.E. students will be fully engaged in a two-day intensive leadership experience. Furthermore, they will be given a journal to chronicle their growth and experiences for the four-year period, the writings of which will be optionally submitted to the P.O.S.S.E. publication Capstone. Monthly Gathering: P.O.S.S.E. will meet once a month at the Center for a gathering with Path of Success leaders. During the meetings, P.O.S.S.E. students will be encouraged to share goals that they have reached and principles they have instilled in their lives and will set new goals for the upcoming month. In addition, the Ministry will invite various guest speakers including local business professionals and sports and entertainment stars from similar backgrounds to speak with the P.O.S.S.E. students. Monthly meetings will also provide an opportunity to P.O.S.S.E. students to build community. Summer Volunteer Internships: Realizing that the P.O.S.S.E. students may not be old enough after their freshman year to receive paid summer jobs, Path of Success will solicit volunteer summer opportunities from local organizations, as well as provide one at Cornerstone Christian Center. Path of Success will highlight the fact that these students have been trained in principles of leadership and character development. Specific opportunities will be sought to allow P.O.S.S.E. students to begin building their resume and college application experience. P.O.S.S.E. students will be encouraged to consider summer internships at public or charitable organizations. Comprehensive Support: Grade Level Advisor and Tutors: Three levels of adult support will be provided to P.O.S.S.E. students creating an environment of encouragement. Team Advisors will provide the consistent anchor to P.O.S.S.E. students on an ongoing, day to day basis. Mentors and college study partners will enhance this support system. Grade Level Advisors: During the Leadership Retreat, P.O.S.S.E. students will be separated into groups of six for small group discussions and outdoor activities. Each group will have a Team Advisor (\"GLA\") who will work with that group during the Leadership Retreat and throughout their journey. GLA will provide support to students as they write their plans and goals for the future. TAs will also assess the students’ academic strengths and weaknesses and suggest a plan of action for the upcoming school year. GLA will be in contact with P.O.S.S.E. student’s monthly to assist with mentor and college study 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

partner coordination, goal setting, and character development, and to provide general success coaching. GLA will also be in contact with high school contacts to share information and coordinate supportive efforts. College Study Partners: Path of Success will recruit college students from our Bridge Ministry, as well as neighboring college campus ministries to serve as college study partners (CSP). The CSPs will provide assistance to P.O.S.S.E. students in their weak academic areas. The CSPs will be encouraged to serve not only as tutors, but also to provide insightful advice related to being a Christian on a college campus. Phase III - Team & Community Building: “Tapping the Riches Within” Time Frame: Summer prior to Sophomore Year – Sophomore Year End Description: Adopting a similar approach as that used in Phase II, P.O.S.S.E. will begin the year with a one-day retreat. During this phase, the retreat’s focus will be on community leadership and altruism. Support will include monthly meetings, mentoring, tutoring, assistance from a Team Advisor, and internships. By year's end, P.O.S.S.E. students will have successfully completed a self-designed community project. Community Leadership Retreat: Many students from disadvantaged backgrounds believe that they do not have anything to contribute to society. To combat this belief, the P.O.S.S.E. will attend a one-day retreat focused on the principle of giving. The goal of the retreat is to break the “poverty mentality” which grips so many of today’s youth – that is, “I am too poor to give.” The P.O.S.S.E. will learn that monetary wealth is not a prerequisite to giving; rather, many times it is the result thereof. The students will engage in a variety of activities designed to show them that they have been blessed with an abundance of resources which they can share with others. Through brainstorming and goal setting activities, P.O.S.S.E. teams will create a presentation of how they plan to give back in their community in the coming year. Volunteers from local organizations will attend part of the retreat to inform P.O.S.S.E. students about their programs. Monthly Meetings: Each month, P.O.S.S.E. will meet to participate in one of the community service initiatives identified during the Community Leadership Retreat (i.e., soup kitchens, Homeless Outreach, Habitat for Humanity, visiting children’s hospitals). Each student will continue to keep a journal of his or her giving experiences, and each group will be responsible for preparing a presentation of the experience for the next meeting. Prior to leaving for the service action, each group will discuss their activities from the prior month. Special guests will attend the meetings from time to time to encourage the students in their quest to give back, and to participate in the community service activity with the P.O.S.S.E.. 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

Summer Internship: Capitalizing on the previous summer’s volunteer jobs, Path of Success will approach local businesses for paid summer internship opportunities in all fields of work. The Ministry’s goal is to place each student in an internship in the area of his or her interest. Team Advisor: The Grade Level Advisors will meet with each P.O.S.S.E. student to discuss academic progress, examine the extracurricular activities in which the student is involved to insure that the \"whole student\" is being developed. The Team Advisor will review the student aptitude tests taken at the retreat and coordinate tutors in preparing students for upcoming city aptitude tests. The Team Advisors will also advise students on courses that should be taken in the junior year and extracurricular activities in which to participate. Phase IV - College Preparation & Tools for Success: “College Bound” Time Frame: Pre-Junior Year Summer - Senior Year Fall Semester End Description: While Phase IV again adopts a comprehensive support model used in the prior phases of P.O.S.S.E., this year is differentiated as P.O.S.S.E. students will be taught numerous practical skills, such as interviewing techniques and study skills, via modular training units. Modular units will be presented using a public speaking format allowing students to become more proficient and comfortable with speech delivery. They will also become familiar with the college systems and will be able to select colleges they would like to attend school by year's end. Components for this year will include college road trip, SAT preparatory course, school year employment, support of a Team Advisor, monthly meetings, summer internships, and mentors. College Road Trip: Sophomore and junior year, P.O.S.S.E. will take a two-day road trip to visit colleges. The objective of the trip is to transform the idea of college admission from a dream into a goal. Students will meet with college underclassmen from campus ministries who will explain the importance of junior year grades in high school, preparation for the Standard Aptitude Test, and the college admission/financial aid process. Parents will attend a workshop with college advisors and financial aid counselors designed to demystify the college admission and financial aid process. SAT Preparatory Course: The P.O.S.S.E. Juniors will take part in a top quality SAT preparatory course. The students will take weekly tests to eliminate the “shock” of seeing the test for the first time and to track their progress in preparing for the actual exam. P.O.S.S.E. juniors will register and take the SAT test at least once as a junior Junior Meetings: The junior meetings will involve SAT preparatory instruction, preparing college and financial aid applications, attending social and cultural events, and attending workshops on college interviewing, time management, financial management, and writing college essays. 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

Team Advisor: The TAs will meet with each P.O.S.S.E. student to discuss academic progress and examine extracurricular activities. The TAs will also coordinate with school guidance counselors to advise the students on which courses should be taken in the senior year. In addition, each P.O.S.S.E. student and his or her family will meet with the TA and a college advisor to discuss college choices for the student. The student will thereby determine a three-tier list of colleges: Highly Competitive, Most Likely to Grant Admission, and Safety School. Phase V - Review of Principles & Life's Future: “What Lies Ahead” Time Frame: Senior Year Description: Preparing for one of the most significant transitions of their lives - high school to college - P.O.S.S.E. students will revisit the basic principles taught in Phase II. They will also begin learning how to act as role models and mentors to younger students and will be provided with specialized training in this regard. Following a Leadership Summit, P.O.S.S.E. students will be provided continued support in the form of monthly meetings, assistance from a TA and mentoring. Leadership Summit: This two-day Summit will be a return to the basics. The students will revisit the Path of Success principles taught at the Phase II Leadership Retreat and learn how to apply them to the path ahead. It will also provide them with training to support future Phase II P.O.S.S.E. students. The P.O.S.S.E. will be given the opportunity to look back at the last three years and share their successes and challenges. The Retreat will end with the students committing to continue living principle-centered lives for Jesus Christ. Team Advisor: Each P.O.S.S.E. student and his or her family will meet with GLA. Phase VI - A Lifetime Connection: “Going Forward and Giving Back” Time Frame: College Pre-freshman Summer Description: Having successfully completed the P.O.S.S.E. program, participants will be treated to a special semi-formal celebration and will be invited to continue their involvement with Path of Success for their lifetime. Path of Success Black Tie Celebration: The P.O.S.S.E. and their family will be invited to a graduation celebration. The occasion will be a gala of vision, commitment and success. All organizations that have 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

played a part in their journey of the P.O.S.S.E. will be invited. Select members will have an opportunity to discuss the impact of the programs on their lives. A Lifetime of Learning: The P.O.S.S.E. will be encouraged to remain a part of Path of Success by serving as potential GLA, serving as chaperones on retreats, assisting at monthly meetings, and being a part of the Alumni network. They will also be allowed to continue to use their assigned email address by paying an annual fee and thereby becoming a supporting member for the Ministry. GOALS Path of Success’s long-term goals are to see all of the students from the initial program graduate from high school and enter a four-year college of their choice. 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

P.O.S.S.E. PROGRAM FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPALS The Lion Tamer Principle: v The strength of the lion tamer does not lie in the fact that he is stronger than the lion, but that the lion thinks he is. Living on the Level of Desire Principle: v Your spirit asks one question- “IF success was guaranteed, and failure was not an option, what would I desire to do?” Reactive Living vs. Proactive Living Principle: v Mediocre students live reactive lives. Reactive living causes you to dream and set goals with your body, plan with your soul and use your spirit to carry it out. v Successful students live proactive lives. Proactive living causes you to dream and set goals with your spirit, plan with your soul and use your body to carry it out. Dream on Purpose Principle: . v Most people dream while sleeping or zoning out, but successful students Dream on Purpose, which is the voluntary occurrence of ideas, aspirations or desires. v Most people resist dreaming on purpose because they resist living on purpose. Master the Art of Goal Setting Principle: v You are more likely to achieve your goals when you write them on paper. v You must create a roadmap to achieve your goals. 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

Never Give Up Principle: v Successful students understand that the harder a task become the closer you are to success. Response –ability Principle: v Each individual has the response-ability or the ability to respond to a situation in the manner he/she chooses. No one can make you do anything. You always have a choice. v You can respond to your past hurts and failures in any manner you choose. You can allow them to be your excuse to fail or your reason to succeed. The Unforgiveness Principles: v Unforgiveness hurts the unforgiver not the unforgiven. v Most people think, “I won’t forgive because I am still hurting.” But the truth is that you will not stop hurting until you forgive. Power of Forgiveness Principle: v Forgiveness frees YOU from the pain of your past Character vs. Personality Principle: v A character-based life is based upon the principles by which you live. v A personality-based life is focused upon pleasing the people around you. Daring to Be Different Principle: v You must be willing to stand out among your peers, especially in school, sports, and social situations. The objective is not to be better than anyone else, but to be your best. v Criticism is always spoken more loudly than praise. 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218

v When you dare to be different, other people will eventually begin to follow you. Friendship vs. friendship Principle: v Unless you are willing to lose your friendship, you will never have a real Friendship. v Friendship is defined as two people, each of whom is afraid of losing the other. Therefore, they resist being honest with each other. v Friendship is based on such qualities as loyalty, respect, honesty, dependability, honor, and truth. Relationship vs. relationship Principle: v Unless you are willing to lose your relationship, you will never have a real Relationship. v Relationship is built upon lust not love. v Relationship is based upon such qualities as love loyalty, respect, honesty, dependability, honor, and truth. Rose Bud vs. Rose Bush Principle: v Rose buds break away from their roots. Consequently, the more beautiful they become, the closer they are to death. v Rose bushes remain firmly rooted. As a result, they bloom slowly, but right on time. They also have the potential to flourish year after year. v Dare to be a Rose Bush. When you remain firmly rooted in your principles, you may not bloom quickly in life but you will bloom in due season and flourish year after year. The Can’t Principle: v Successful students never use the phrase “I can’t”. Instead, they say “I choose not to” or “I don’t want to.” 192 Meadow Street, Milford, CT 06461 Phone (203) 877-1007 (ext. 27) Fax (203) 877-1218
