INBOX LETTER OF THE MONTH I was really delighted to go through the last issue of the Ideal Home and Garden which was truly an inspiration for my home upliftment. The best part about the feature is that all the stories are relatable and friendly. I loved the shopping story which revealed different brands dealing in Indian Handicrafts. This gave me a chance to revamp my space with all Indian decor products. Thanks to the team for bringing in such beautiful ideas that cannot be missed! Harsha Sethi, Pune With a drastic change in the lifestyle of the people because of the pandemic there has been visible change in our views on design. TIHG has left no stone unturned in coping with different scenarios and producing some excellent ideas, which is commendable. The homes which are featured every month are a focal point, calling out to my curiosity and fascination together. Eagerly waiting for the last 2020 issue and the new stories ahead. Seema Harlalka, Jaipur The last few months have surely been difficult for all of us. But thanks to the entire team of TIHG for religiously provided all the readers with innovative ideas and stories. The articles are reader friendly and all the visuals are perfectly set which makes interiors and architecture more engaging. The layout of the magazine not only gives good reads but also a wide perspective of visual reality. Kudos to the entire team and a very Merry Christmas! Samarth Jain, Surat I am not really an ardent follower of decor ethics but my accidental encounter with The Ideal Home and Garden has changed my interests drastically. What caught my attention was the Palette Play story which was very different and attractive. We were actually struggling to decide that perfect colour scheme for our house and they were ready with solutions. It is really amazing to see the unique designs which the magazine comes up with and which can be easily implemented. Thanks a lot. Sreya Shah, Kolkata First of I would like to wish a very Merry Christmas to the team. The year 2020 has been full of ups and downs but TIHG has kept us all motivated and boosted. With some unique ideas on board, the magazine has always made us feel more enthusiastic about design and architecture. They have explored issues like Green architecture, Indian Crafts revival, Biophilic Interiors etc and made a drastic change in design attitudes. We are truly grateful to the entire team for this. TIHG Trend Reading The TRends With the 2021 just around the corner, this is the moment to reflect and assess the décor trends that would sustain, perish or take root with stylized flair. TIHG brings eight experts who share their reading of the design tea leaves, based on their experience and understanding of this space. Research: Arushi Chaturvedi Image: Photographix anushka ConTRaCToR, PRinCiPal designeR, anushka ConTRaCToR “Homes today will be designed with more purpose and functionality since we are all working from home. Now, the desire for uniquely curated and crafted interiors is quite high. To create this collected feel, statement pieces are used to add depth and flair to space. Shades of blues, particularly dark ones, will be a 2021 trend for creating elegant and contemporary spaces. Neutral tones will also remain a staple as far as colour schemes are concerned. These colours are gentle to the eye which encourages relaxation and experimentation with various kinds of bold artistic pieces and paintings. Light shades of wood have popped up in everything from furniture to accent walls like paneling and cabinetry. With its raw colour and aesthetic, light shades of wood in interior design is a trend that we can expect to remain strong through 2021.” 28 | December 2020 The Ideal Home and Garden

TIHG Trend seema PuRi mullan, Co-foundeR, seZa “There seems to be a shift from using neutral tones to bright colours like peacock blue, yellows and of course blush which seems to be here to stay. Curvilinear forms are back with a bang, everywhere you see arches, capsule shapes, half curves, full curves, everything wants to make a circular statement. Colour wraps entire volumes, people have thrown caution to type wind! I however still believe that good design is timeless whether we look at interior design , architecture or product design. Create spaces that are elegant, speak a unified language so that many years later after trends have come and gone your design still looks relevant.” Image: Vinesh Gandhi The Ideal Home and Garden December 2020 | 29

TIHG Trend suPaRna handa, managing diReCToR, suman kanodia, Co-foundeR, sCaRleT sPlendouR saRiTa handa “We see a shift from pastel shades to medium and darker tones, hues of brick, coral blue and purples “Our focus this year will be on would be the mood of interior spaces. The play of eco-friendly and sustainable cotton textures on walls and predominant materials on concepts. In themes we will go furniture from metal, marble to cane, wood and forward with Botanica. Actual resin and are also trends that we look forward to botanical floral based prints and in 2021. As we step into the next year, our homes will be looking to make the most of the space we have. With time and adapted approaches with focus towards health, this will trickle down in a healthy and sustainable environment and the shift towards natural materials will continue with an all allowing flexibility. The design trends in the last few years have seen a revival of sorts using old materials with a fresh and contemporary look but keeping it minimalistic, this year I think there will be focus on layering not only contrasting décor but same colour with different textures and bold monochromatic. Since we can’t go out as often and that may continue in the first quarter or even half the coming year, the focus will be to bring the out “indoors” , the return of balconies, plants, self sustaining neutral spaces which work for all seasons.” 30 | December 2020 The Ideal Home and Garden

TIHG Trend viniThRa amaRnaThan, foundeR, WeesPaCes “We are seeing a resurgence of warm earthy grounded colors and textures in design. This is closely connected with another trend that we are loving and keen to see more of: the use of natural materials in design. The use of bamboo, cane, rattan and rope in a big way make for spaces that are warm, inviting and relaxed. Along with this the use of complementing warm earth tones like mustards, olives, rust and taupe are perfect for creating lived in and warm spaces. With the Covid pandemic we realize now more than ever the need to bring the outdoors in. Also, being home more than ever, we realize the power of embracing vintage well loved pieces. Giving them a new lease of life by taking the DIY approach or reimagining things has been a great way to freshen up homes. Its sustainable and brings character to any designed space.” Image: Shamanth Patil Photography The Ideal Home and Garden December 2020 | 31

TIHG Trend ajaay sRinivas, founding diReCToR, nuanCe sTudio 32 | December 2020 The Ideal Home and Garden “Entry of concrete in the luxury industry - Concrete has been criticised in many instances for being a cold material. But the trend of concrete has passed the test of time, as slowly but steadily, many architects and designers across the globe have adopted the material in their design language. The untamed nature of concrete, the imperfections and its rawness awes and compliments modern age architecture and interiors. The new age concrete is not just limited as a building material butit has carved its niche in products made for the Luxury segment of the design industry. The new age Concrete is a highly durable material. Apart from its longevity, the concrete ages gracefully and breathes, just like natural stone or wood. Unlike synthetic material, it doesn’t freeze in time or deteriorate. The aging of concrete adds a sense of being alive and lives along the test of time. Concrete is indeed timeless!” bobby aggaRWal, design diReCToR, PoRTsideCafe “The quest for ‘Private Spaces’ is going to continue to be a major trend in 2021, which started in mid 2020 and the ‘Home Office’ is now a new way of life. Lets face it, the dining table which became the temporary alternative came with its own short-comings and was at best going to be an interim solution. Especially with a family around. The constant breaks for meals wasn’t really an efficient option. Hence people seriously started converting their spare living spaces and extra nooks in the bedroom into office space with the help of beautiful screens and plants. The trend in 2021 will be to invest in buying desks and bureaus for personal use. And this is where PortsideCafe comes in with a whole range of well designed and beautifully crafted pieces from their collections, which would fit in perfectly with your existing spaces. In the pics we are just sharing a glimpse with you. We have many more choices for you to pick from.”

Aligning with the pressing issues of sustainability, craftsmanship and environmental awareness, this well-intentioned approach of luxury is the constantly growing trend. TIHG Special Karan Meel, Managing Director, Hastkala Jaipur “The road to conscious luxury is long but necessary. It demands innovative solutions to forge the foundation on which the future of that product/business/industry/ country lies on. It will lead to a cultural shift, which we can see in the fashion industry, where brands are moving away from fast fashion (their best seller) and leaning in on recycling trends. The need of the hour is a design change, which is an environmentally friendly luxury, something which the consumer feels smug to embrace because of its sustainable qualities.” CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Yes, We Cane Collection*, Hastkala; Oss, `2,999 each, Nama Home; Kubine carpet in Vertura, `48,000 onwards, Mishcat Co; Radha’s Divine Trance Kangra Miniature Painting*, Studio Deepak Badhwar; Ottoman Incandescent Lamp without Shade, `11,424, Craft Maestros *prices on request Ishrat Sahgal, Founder, Mishcat Co “Conscious luxury is indulgence that is well thought through, holistically. A consumer that chooses to buy a luxury product in today’s market is investing not only in the actual product, but also in the company, its ideology, its practices, its beliefs and its carbon footprint as well. It has never been more important to be conscious of all of these things as a whole than only being swayed by the appearance of an object.” The Ideal Home and Garden December 2020 | 39

TIHG Special Sahil Bagga & Sarthak Sengupta, Co-founders, Product & Interior Designers, Sarthak Sahil Design Co “Conscious luxury is the luxury for the future. It precipitates three realms of every product and service, namely: conscious purchasing, conscious production and conscious consumption. When we design a product, we pay special attention to how the raw materials of that product are procured, to the safe and ethical process of turning these raw materials into a finished product, by employing a sustainable partnership with artisan communities and finally to how sustainable will it be for our consumers who use our product, to discard this at the end of its life cycle without it adding more to the landfill.” 40 | December 2020 The Ideal Home and Garden

Even for me, the meaning of this word changed through different phases of my life - during childhood it meant having an extra day to sleep in because the rains had flooded the road, in adolescence the curfew time being pushed to 10 PM and later when luxury was buying a Hermes bag. But this year has changed the definition of luxury, I would imagine for most of us. With what this phase threw at all of us, luxury today has a completely new meaning. It is now attached to more simpler things: the simple joys of life. The things around us which we always took for granted are the ones the proved to be invaluably priceless during troubled times. It proved the best things in life money truly can’t buy! Luxury now, at home, means having a more sustainable lifestyle which is more eco-friendly and utilizes elements which are more sustainable, more natural! And incredibly nature does give us enough to make our homes refreshingly beautiful! Brought together, flowers dried at home, some hay straw sticks, wooden twigs of coconuts, and leaves finished off with some candles and an alluring tablescape is ready. Furthermore having a kitchen garden gives one the space where we can grow some herbs and vegetables and cook with them. Indeed luxury is when your kitchen garden smells so strongly of the herbs that they make your meals appetizing even before you start cooking. Who would have thought of this as luxury in the pre-Covid times? And lastly but most importantly, the people who make your home a home, your family. Build a home that matches well with your family’s vibe and personality. And enjoy the biggest luxury of all time which is to be around people who love and celebrate you. This is a luxury, whose importance we were able to understand only in these trying times! After having been gifted these lessons, let us now cherish the real and the true luxuries that life has to offer. Like enjoying the full blooms of your bougainvillea flower, spending a Sunday getting all muddy trying to manure and repot your plants, having flowers at home, eating that rare meal at a restaurant and just being so grateful and happy for all that we have in our lives. Luxury has finally found its true meaning, even if it took a global pandemic to help us understand the deep essence of the word. The Ideal Home and Garden December 2020 | 47

TIHG Decor Swinging TradiTionS Swaying back and forth, a swing or a jhula is a common fixtures of older Indian households that adds whimsy, familiar comfort and relaxing familiarity which is rooted in the magic of traditions. Here are some architects that have reintegrated this symbol of cozy earthiness into contemporary designs, to produce results that are genuinely breathtaking. Research: Arushi Chaturvedi ranjiTha govind raj | Founder, deSignriTmo | image: ravi Kanade “In a scenario where urbanisation has taken over our lifestyle, it becomes the architects responsibility to bring in the sweet memories of the bygone lifestyle and elements seen in vernacular living into the urban setting. Due to space constraints many at times we are only able to provide glimpses of it. In this house we were able to carve out a space where the client is reminded of the essence of living within nature. A semi open terrace space, in a setting of green walls and grass engulfed in natural light. When a setting is created, we needed to decide how the client will engage in the space. The decision of adding the jhula was to emphasis on the idea of creating a touch of vernacular living. The jhula brings in a very special touch to the space. While being the main eye-catching element, it also brings in a calming effect subconsciously along with bringing in childhood memories of a swing.” 48 | December 2020 The Ideal Home and Garden

Traditionally, it was always an integral part of seating across all realms of Indian architecture. Urbanization and subsequent shortage of space resulted in the jhula giving way to more compact furniture. We at studio TAB always try to introduce the jhula in its pure form or an interpretation of it based on the conceptual planning of the project. The jhula adds character, flair and a distinct sense of home within the given space. It is functional as much as it is aesthetic. It is a piece of furniture that encapsulates multi-fold functions - be it leisure, lounging, reading or a siesta.” The Ideal Home and Garden December 2020 | 49
