Child and Youth Development (CYD) Program Structure and Rationale of the Child and Youth Development Program The CYD program is an after-school program for learners between Grade 1 and 12 in schools in and around Braamfontein, Alexandra, Diepsloot and Orange Farm in Johannesburg as well as Mfuleni in Cape Town. CYD is aimed at ensuring that young people have enhanced capabilities to participate in the socio-economic development of South Africa and that young people have capabilities and social capital to be active citizens. After-school interventions of this nature were recognized as crucial to the child and youth development, especially in low socio-economic communities (Iachini et.al. 2016). But, having looked at the literature, young people in South Africa face multiple, intersecting barriers to becoming productive citizens (National Development Plan 2011):  Trauma and stress, and a lack of access to safe, nurturing environments and relationships, lack of parenting and family care. o Trauma and stress in early childhood inhibits executive function development o High levels of violent crime against children, especially children with disabilities and vulnerable children o High levels of crime committed by the youth o Children with disabilities and other vulnerable children face social exclusion and discrimination  Poor health outcomes o Malnutrition o 2000 new HIV infection occur among young women and adolescent girls (aged 15 - 24) each week o The high rate of teenage pregnancy o Substance and alcohol abuse  Poor quality education continues to widen the cycle of poverty and inequality o Grade repetition. o High school drop-out rate. o The education system does not prepare young people to face the world. o Lack of access to information to make informed decisions about subject choices. o Lack of access to information to help career choices. o Limited access for poor youth to the kinds of information and social networks to seek for employment.  Poverty o Almost six out of ten young people 59% live in households that earn less than R650 per month. o 45% of the youth are unemployed, 25-30% school leavers never find formal employment or enter the job market, despite a skills shortage in some technical fields. o Lack of access to sports and cultural opportunities. o Lack of youth civic participation. The team analyzed 5 big issues facing young people in South Africa, which are relevant to CYD. These were: 1. Poor access to State services needed by young people (DBE, DoH, DSD, justice). 2. Many children don’t get a basic education, there is a high drop-out rate in high school. 2

Child and Youth Development (CYD) Program 3. Young people who leave school have unrealistic expectations of their capabilities and the wages they expect to earn. 4. Limited access by young people to information and social networks that leads to a lack of opportunities after school (further training, employment, etc). 5. A lack of ‘soft’ skills that predict success in life, such as self-discipline, communication skills, impulse control, punctuality, and emotional maturity. Having discussed the root causes for the issues listed above, the team set about eliminating issues that are beyond the scope of Afrika Tikkun (like poor quality of teaching in State schools) and prioritizing the issues that Afrika Tikkun can conceivably address. We acknowledge that while there are endless social problems that affect the lives of young people, it would not be feasible nor effective for the CYD program to attempt to address all problems. The structure of the program is heavily influenced by the theoretical framework of Positive Youth Development (PYD) “Schools recognise that partnerships are needed with community organisations to extend learning and development opportunities beyond the traditional hours of the school day” ~ Iachini et.al. 2016 programs. Afrika Tikkun is positioned in communities that are plagued with high levels of poverty were crime, violence and risky behavior are prevalent among young people. PYD interventions are designed to support young people to build “competence, self-efficacy, belonging and empowerment, thus promoting positive behavior and reducing the likelihood of risk behavior (Bowers et.al. 2010). According to Zarrett and Lerner (2008), successful PYD interventions promote the following characteristics among young people, also referred to as the 5 Cs;  Competence- “a positive view of one’s actions in specific areas including social, academic, cognitive, health and vocational”;  Confidence- “an internal sense of overall positive self-worth and self-efficacy”;  Connection- “positive bonds with people and institutions that are reflected in exchanges between the individual and his or her peers”;  Character- “respect for societal and cultural norms, possession of standards for correct behaviors, a sense of right and wrong (morally) and integrity”; and  Caring/compassion- “a sense of sympathy and empathy for others” (Zarrett and Lerner 2008). Therefore, PYD is a very broad phenomenon describing a range of competencies which include “becoming a caring and ethical individual, developing a general sense of self-worth, having a positive future orientation and learning how to adapt to different educational and working environments [and] also includes the development of psychological attributes and dispositions and specific skills” (Gould and Carson 2008). The Afrika Tikkun program is closely aligned to these positive youth development outcomes and is structured as seen in its logical framework on the next page.

Child and Youth Development (CYD) Program Care for Yourself: Pillar Objectives Afrika Tikkun has a holistic set of outcomes and pillars, recognising that economic empowerment is not solely influenced by matric results, post-school choice, and tertiary education performance. The third CYD short-term outcome is to ensure that young people have the social skills that enable them to manage and take responsibility for achieving their goals in life. Such skills include emotional intelligence and resilience which are fostered through extra-curricular activities such as sport, music, and dance. Rather than an exclusive focus on academic performance, Afrika Tikkun realises that team sports and fun are an excellent tool for building “time and stress management skills, character development and decision- making skills, communication skills and general confidence. These vital skills are also called executive functioning skills and include the ability to exhibit flexible adaptive behaviour, the use of appropriate problem-solving strategies as required for maintaining and updating goals, the capacity to monitor the consequences of actions, and the ability to use prior knowledge to correctly interpret future events (Miyake & Shah 1999). In order to effectively use sport and other extra-curricular activities to promote the 5C’s of Positive Youth Development described above, Petitpas et al. (2004) says the following is needed; • An appropriate context for self-discovery, • External assets such as caring mentors, • Internal assets that are important for dealing with building self-confidence and dealing with life’s challenges, and • A comprehensive system of evaluation and research that benefits the youth. Therefore, the success of sport and extra-curricular programs is not limited to winning competitions as one would assume. In fact, Iachini et al. (2017) discovered that these programs are likely to succeed when program leaders are perceived to be supportive of young people’s autonomy. Their study encourages program leaders to draw on the expertise of school teachers and social workers to help build positive youth development outcomes. The Care for Yourself pillar has four focus areas as follows: Physical Activities The physical activities theme ensures that children receive a solid foundation in developing movement skills so that they are active in life and understand the benefits of regular exercise. Physical activity has the long-term benefit of preventing chronic illnesses. However, in the short-term, young people benefit from having a better motor and sensory development, as well as having strong bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Physical activity also benefits children and young people academically, by stimulating mental development. In fact, multiple studies have shown that higher academic achievement is associated with high levels of fitness. Physical activity allows children and young people to be more productive, motivated, better organized and more effective at learning and performing tasks. Most importantly, physical activity contributes to learners having better concentration in class. Nutrition Everyone needs a balanced diet to stay healthy and active. Children need to eat a variety of foods to grow, develop, and be strong. Foods are made up of different elements that work in different ways in our bodies. Some elements give us the energy to work and play, others help us grow and build bones and muscle, still, others help keep us healthy and protect us from diseases. 7

Child and Youth Development (CYD) Program Hygiene In environments where people don’t practice good hygiene, they are not protected from feces and they are exposed to germs, which cause diarrhea and acute respiratory diseases. These two illnesses are big killers of young children, and they are the primary illnesses facing school-aged children. Safer water, combined with good hygiene practices, can reduce diarrhea infections by more than half. When safe water and good sanitation facilities are available, but there are poor hygiene practices, you get fewer of the benefits of improved water and sanitation. Child and youth development stages are extremely sensitive times for a number of health issues, especially when it comes to adopting health behavior that can have lifelong consequences. Young people will be exposed to a variety of health themes in this pillar: nutrition, disease prevention, physical growth and development, reproduction, mental health, drug, and alcohol abuse prevention, and safety (crossing streets, riding bikes, first aid). The goal of this education is not only to increase young people’s health knowledge and to create positive attitudes toward his own well-being but also to promote healthy be- havior. By going beyond simply increasing knowledge, this pillar demands more involvement on the part of the young person than in all the other pillars. Children and young people are being taught life skills, not merely academic skills.

Child and Youth Development (CYD) Program Suggested Facilitation Techniques Throughout this manual, various facilitation techniques are used to help young people learn and actively participate in the sessions. Facilitators will be encouraged to use a variety of these techniques, which include:  Discussions: These are facilitated with the whole group and focus on a particular question, theory or approach. Discussions can be introduced with a question, story, or pictures. If possible sit in one large circle or if the training room is too small, sit in two semi-circles.  Pair Discussion: These can be part of the whole group discussion where young people can reflect in pairs more personally on a question or experience.  Group work: Young people work in smaller groups of 5-6 participants. You need to provide material, questions or a task for the participants. The allocated time should be around 15-30min and the participants work on one topic, question or problem. You can ask one representative from each group to present a short summary of the work.  Brainstorming: This technique is a led discussion with the whole group. All participants work on one issue or question collecting their ideas. Participants may be asked to write 3 or more related issues on key cards. Afterward, the participants and the facilitator discuss these ideas and place them on a wall or chart. This technique also allows for the clustering of themes and ideas.  Ice-Breakers/energizers: Although these are not necessarily learning techniques, they are an essential component of any training programme! They consist of fun, short activities that are used to encourage participants to find out about each other and to lift energy levels within the training.  Role Play: This is when the participants use acting to explore different teaching and learning experiences. These can also be performed as songs, dance or poems. Let your imagination run free!  Games and experiential learning activities: This is when the participants experience games and activities that explore different qualities of a leader. These fun activities also work towards encouraging team-building and cohesion.  Artwork and drawings: Predominantly used with younger participants, artwork and drawings can be used to help participants to creatively describe themselves and the qualities of a good leader.  Storytelling: Using stories to highlight particular issues or ideas can be a useful method for younger participants, particularly if done with visual means such as puppets and pictures.  Self-reflection: This method creates space for young people to quietly think about how particular activities or questions that relate to their own realities. This can be done as an individual activity or as part of group work. Adopted from: Afrika Tikkun Empowerment Programme, 2019. Child and Youth Development (CYD) Program Monitoring and Evaluation Monitoring Monitoring is a systematic and continuous assessment of progress over time. This refers to a process that checks and ensures that things are going according to plan and enables adjustments to be made. In order to monitor this manual, the following checks have been established;  Weekly accounts of the successes and challenges experienced whilst implementing Pillar activities.  Quarterly reports compiled by the HOP. Evaluation Evaluation refers to the periodic assessment of the relevance, performance, efficiency, and impact of a piece of work with regards to its stated objectives. Evaluations for the CYD program are carried out at the beginning and end of each year, using the following tools;  One-on-one assessments with all learners  Focus Group Discussions with o Staff o Young People o Parents  Individual Case studies

Drinking alcohol can be seen as a part of adult celebrations, consumed at weddings, work promotions, and sporting events. Of those people who do drink alcohol, there are some who do not drink in moderation. Such drinking can lead to serious health and safety problems. Alcohol interferes with a person’s perception of reality and ability to make good decisions. This can be particularly hazardous for kids and teens that have less problem- solving and decision-making experience. Most countries have a legal age for drinking alcohol. Children should not drink alcohol before the legal drinking age, and they should be able to say “no,” if they are pressured to try. Activity Steps 1. Separate young people into groups of 5. 2. Assign children to draw pictures of alcohol. 3. Once they have drawn pictures, ask young people to share what these substances are and their negative effects.
