NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME The National Service Scheme was launched by the Government of India on October 2, 1969, marking the 100th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. It was en- visaged as an instrument for national integration in a conference of student representatives held in May, 1969, convened by the Ministry of Human Re- source Development and the University Grants Commission. The NSS strives to cultivate in students a deeper commitment to society and equip them to help the community to survive and to sustain. There are two types of NSS activities: Regular Activi- ties (120 hours) and Annual Special Camp (120 hours)

NSS @Al Ameen The National Service Scheme unit of Al-Ameen College, Edathala, was started in 1982. The initial single unit had 100 volunteers under a pro- gramme officer. Later, in 2012, a second unit has been introduced under Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. Currently, the unit comprises of two programme officers and 200 volunteers. The NSS is governed by an advisory body, chaired by the Principal. The body is convened by two NSS programme officers and have former pro- gramme officers, staff advisor, staff association secretary and two NSS vol- unteer secretaries as members. The NSS activities, including those at adopted villages, are conducted under the guidance of this body. The government provides each unit with a regular activity fund of Rs.22,000 and a grant of 22,500 is allowed for special camp. Other activities are fi- nancially supported by the college management, staff members and stu- dents. This has helped the NSS units to conduct multi-faceted activities through the years mentioned above. The NSS units of Al-Ameen conduct regular activities under different heads such as awareness classes, Prime Minister’s Swacch Bharat Abhiyan, day observations, orientation sessions, blood donation camps, a special camp and regular activities. We maintain a blood group directory and supply copies of the same to libraries and shops and a ‘blood army’ of students is always set to donate blood to the needy. Besides this, we chalk out spe- cial plans for the regions adopted by us, keeping in mind their geographic as well as social peculiarities.
